Apple TV software update adds missing Podcasts app
Apple has a host of notable updates coming for iOS, the Apple Watch and the new Apple TV. But in the meantime, the company has just released tvOS 9.1.1, a relatively minor bug fix update that nonetheless contains at least one user-facing feature: a Podcasts app. The fact that the new Apple TV shipped without this app was rather puzzling, as the older Apple TV has had podcast features for some time. Now, that gap has been closed.
Apple TV's Siri will help you binge-watch in only eight countries
Apple TV's new Siri-enabled remote, with a touchpad and mic, has finally brought the media player up to speed with its competitors like Roku and Amazon. In addition to a snappy universal search, the digital assistant can now pick shows by cameos, movies by actors and genres by age. The demo onstage -- with Siri pulling up the weather and a sport scorecard while automatically pausing the movie in the background -- seemed to give the company's TV box a much-needed edge. But according to their developer guide, the voice-controlled TV watching pleasure will be limited to only eight countries at the time of launch end of next month.
Apple TV (2012) gets torn down, confirmed to have 512MB of RAM, 8GB of storage
We already knew about most of the latest Apple TV's technical upgrades, but a few key specs have eluded us since its announcement. That's now changed, however, thanks to user aicjofs over at XBMC's forum, who ripped a fresh unit apart to find out exactly what's inside of its shell. Apart from its documented single-core A5 SoC, it's now confirmed that the 1080p-capable streamer features 512MB of Hynix-branded RAM (up from 256) along with an unchanged 8GB of storage, courtesy of Toshiba. Interestingly, there's no word on whether it's still packing Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR like the 2010 variant (Apple's website only lists 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi), but MacRumors notes that aicjofs has discovered what's possibly an additional WiFi antenna. Greenpois0n RC6 breaks new Apple TV's bonds, performs untethered jailbreak and NitoTV install
Installing nitoTV on your Apple TV used to involve a mildly difficult SSH process, and for those folks who are turned off by running Terminal and punching in lines of code, the newest version of greenpois0n (RC6) might pique your jailbreak interests. It'll perform an untethered jailbreak (meaning, you can reboot your iProduct without the need to re-JB), freeing your device (iPhone, iPad, etc.) running 4.2.1 and allow you to fulfill all of your out-of-jail needs. Bundled in this new release is a loader that'll inject nitoTV right onto your little black Apple box. This new greenpois0n is said to fix emulation problems (zodttd's emulators were having issues) and can be applied right over your device that's been freed with RC5. But proceed with caution -- we're seeing a bunch of jailbreakers on Twitter claiming have ran into issues (WiFi, booting) with RC6. Hit the source link to grab either the Mac or Windows version. Apple confirms it's sold one million new Apple TVs
Apple said last week that it expected its new Apple TV to cross the one million mark in sales before Christmas, and it's now quietly confirmed that it's managed to do just that. For those keeping score, that means it's sold a million in three months, which is certainly impressive for something Apple still describes as a "hobby," although that description does have the peculiar tendency to lower expectations somewhat. As you may recall, Roku also announced last week that it expected to sell a million units before the end of the year, and its CEO noted that the introduction of the new Apple TV actually seems to have led to a spike in sales of its own media streamers.
New Apple TV hits the FCC with Bluetooth, dual-band WiFi
It's not just the new iPod touch that's gotten the FCC treatment today -- what we can only assume is the new Apple TV has also just turned up in some newly published documents from the agency. Unfortunately, there's no pictures this time around (internal or otherwise), but there are a number of test reports that confirm that the device does indeed pack Bluetooth and dual-band WiFi (802.11 b/g/n at 2.4GHz and 802.11 a/n at 5GHz).
