The spiritual successor to the Clock Tower survival horror series, Project Scissors, has a new name and a new live action teaser. The game is now called NightCry, and the trailer is definitely creepy, if a little light on information. One thing that Clock Tower fans will be sure to notice, however, is the presence of big, bloody scissors. Or, to put it more accurately, big scissors that appear to be made of blood. The teaser is directed by Takashi Shimizu, director of the Ju-On horror film series and its American counterpart, The Grudge. Shimizu was revealed to be a part of the game project last year, along developer Nude Maker, which is led by the director of the original Clock Tower games, Hifumi Kouno. NightCry is planned for iOS, Android and PlayStation Vita. [Image: Nude Maker]

Nude Maker, a Japanese developer led by Clock Tower series creator Hifumi Kouno, has begun development on a new horror-focused franchise. According to the studio's press release, Project Scissors is meant to be a spiritual successor to Clock Tower, and will involve Masahiro Ito, creature designer for the Silent Hill series, Takashi Shimizu, director of the Ju-on films, and other "well known talents in the Japanese game industry" that will be announced later on. In Project Scissors, a luxurious cruise ship has a murder mystery problem. Once enough of the crew fall victim to the killer, the ship is essentially adrift at sea, leaving passengers to share an inescapable space with whatever is keen on knocking them into the afterlife. Solving the mystery is the player's focus, although the increasingly-difficult goal of not dying is of comparable importance. Project Scissors will eventually welcome aboard iOS, Android and Vita owners, but a release date and a glimpse of the game itself are currently as elusive as Project Scissors' killer. When we review a game without finishing it, we call it a Snap Judgment. Read why here. Time played: 3 hours Portable games are often expected to be light, short-session experiences that you can jump into at any time, understand immediately, and play for minutes at a time. Infinite Space is not that at all. It is a deeply complex RPG with several interacting systems, all wrapped in a not-too-friendly interface. In fact, it's pretty much as baroque as you would expect a game about leading fleets of spaceships of your own design to be. %Gallery-22958%

  • Infinite Space tutorial demonstrates how to skip parts of Infinite Space

There's a lot to learn about playing Infinite Space, as evidenced by the fact that Sega has made a second tutorial video for the Platinum Games space RPG. This video teaches one of the most important techniques in the game: skipping battle scenes. Every action in a ship battle is accompanied by a long sequence in which crew members call out what they're doing and prepare whatever kind of action is to be deployed. It's dramatic, and it lends the game a very "spaceship anime" feel -- but it also takes a long time. So, yeah, you can skip that after the first couple of times. The tutorial also covers crew battles and, strangely, recalibrating your touch screen.

Ready to leave your boring home planet and take off on a grand, spacefaring adventure in your very own spaceship? Like, with a crew and everything? Sega has issued the North American release date for Platinum Games and Nude Maker's Infinite Space for DS. You'll be able to build onto your spaceship, engage in space battles and do other space things on March 16. There's a new trailer above -- not as far above as space, just at the top of this post. For some reason, every game from Platinum has been released in the first quarter of the year -- MadWorld in March 2009, Bayonetta in January 2010, and now Infinite Space in March. Will Vanquish debut in Q1 2011?

The latest trailer for Platinum Games's latest, Infinite Space, features some brief clips of the shipbuilding and space combat elements of the RPG's gameplay. It also features voice acting. Yes, those are human voices speaking lines of dialogue from the game. We don't want to make any judgments about the quality of the voice acting, but we can confirm that it is, in fact, voice acting. On an unrelated topic, we'd like to talk about the Nintendo DS's volume slider (and the DSi's rocker switch). Isn't it great how the volume can go all the way down? Why, with the volume minimized, you could enjoy all kinds of interesting games, even if there's some kind of audio issue!

When Sega released the first episode of its Production I.G/Gonzo-animated Infinite Space video series in Japan, we were quite pleased to look at it, but our rudimentary understanding of the language prevented us from gleaning anything substantive from the story. Luckily, Sega has started translating the videos into English, with voice acting and everything, and we can now enjoy both looking at them and knowing what's going on. The voice acting is pretty much what you'd expect from American anime releases, but it's a small price to pay for comprehension. In this trailer, we see that a crash-landed "Watcher" gives protagonist Yuri the opportunity to build his own spaceship. This trailer comes along with Sega's announcement of a spring 2010 release date in North America. We can only hope it continues releasing translated videos to tide us over.%Gallery-22958%

Platinum Games' first release may not have been a sales phenomenon, but the company has found (relative) success with its second, the DS sci-fi roleplaying game Mugen Kouro (Infinite Space). It was a slow week for Japanese software sales, which allowed Infinite Space's 38,394 copies to put it at the top of the Media Create sales chart for last week, its first week in stores. The three spots below that on the chart also belong to DS games: last week's top seller, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days sits at #2, followed by Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth and Sloane and Machale's Mysterious Story. The #5 position is held by Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires on PS3.%Gallery-22958%[Via GamesIndustry.biz]
