  • Need one more at meeting stone

Elizabeth put a good post up the other day about lazy folks who don't take the time to run back into an instance after a wipe, and this forum post by Eleutheria on EU Earthen Ring points out the other side of instance group laziness: Meeting stone standoffs. Here's how it should work: if there aren't yet two people in your group standing by the meeting stone, everyone in the group should be running, riding, or flying to get there. But of course that's not what really happens-- what happens is that the leader of the group makes it there first, and everyone else continues grinding, or goes to check the AH one more time, or has to run repair, or finish a BG, or any number of things that don't involve getting to the meeting stone and summoning. Worst case scenario is that people start trying to convince others to go for them, and one guy is left at the meeting stone shaking his head. Now, some people say that whoever made the group should be summoning, and in most cases, that seems like a good idea. But there are always exceptions. Even if I'm the last to enter a group, I usually start making my way towards the instance anyway-- the trip is never that long, no matter which instance you're going to, and it's better to be nice and use the flight to get another beer/soda then to sit around demanding a summon.Unfortunately, there's no real way to fix this except to call out people for just plain being lazy. I guess it would be cool if Blizzard gave a nice timed buff to the first two people in a group to use a meeting stone summon, except then you'd probably have tons of people hanging around the RFC meeting stone in Org before they queued up for the battleground. As a few people point out in the thread, probably the best way to deal with it is just to give up on the group. Maybe next time they'll be ready to work together outside the portal as well as inside.

  • Service with a smile in the Bank and AH

Datto asks an awesome question: which banker do you use? Do you have a loyalty to a specific banker, or do you just always hit up the closest one? Whenever I think of banking, I think of Orgrimmar, and walking a few steps in and to the left to see my man Karus (at least I think it's Karus-- is it wrong of me to never get to know the teller all the times I've visited him?).It's not that I won't bank elsewhere-- when in Undercity, I often visit the Montagues, and if I happen to be in TB, I'll go to them (although, truth be told, I can't ever really remember visiting the bank in TB). On Alliance side, I don't have a specific banker that I go to, but I do like the Stormwind Bank-- it seems so much cleaner than Ironforge's bank. IF seems like a dirty pawn shop to me. Plus, Stormwind's bankers are named "Olivia," "Newton," and "John," so there's that. The same could be asked about auctioneers, and again, on Horde I do about 80% of my AH shopping in Orgrimmar, all with the guy on the left (and I have no idea at all what his name is). There is something to be said, as a few players note, for simply going to the auctioneer that's the least busy-- it's nicer not to have to fight the lines to get a click in. And on Alliance side, there is none other: all of my auctioneer business goes through the lovely Redmuse in Ironforge. She's been running my auctions for me ever since the beginning, and I've seen no reason to change. Every once in a while, IF will run laggy, and I'll be a little irked that she's taking so long to get my auction up, but one look in those eyes and that red hair, and everything's OK again.

  • Breakfast topic: How do you pronounce "Medivh," exactly?

Did you know that Auchindoun is pronounced "Aw-kin-doon," not "Aw-chin-do-in," as I've been saying it? As a shaman main, I know that the plural of shaman is shaman, but I always mess up Silithus-- for some reason I called it "Sith-il-us" all the time (it's really "Sil-i-thus," of course). Maybe too much Star Wars. Orgrimmar isn't that hard, and Gnomeregan is pretty easy once you know what it is. But those of you who are longtime readers may remember the trouble I had here on the site with spelling Draenei-- for some reason, I thought it was "Draenai" for the longest time. I messed up Maraudon a lot, too.Because so many of the names we see ingame aren't always spoken out loud, there's lots of little linguistic quirks in the proper names and language of Azeroth. What else have you seen that you were confused with, either with the pronunciation or spelling?

Via Livejournal, here's another WoW cake-- lottie says she made it for her boyfriend's birthday, but the URL on the pic goes to a site where there's all kinds of nerdy cakes to check out.The cake depicts the gates outside Orgrimmar, of course, and apparently everything there is edible (and sugary): "chocolate and vanilla sponges with mars bar mini rolls, matchmaker chocolates, jaffa cakes and chocolate finger biscuit and chocolate chip logs." This is the second amazing Horde cake we've seen-- where's your delicious cake skills at, Alliance?

I know, I know... we've all seen Orgrimmar countless times by now, haven't we? But you have to admit -- the place does have its charm. And something about the purple of twilight setting over the city with the bonfires blazing bright orange is rather picturesque, I think. So there you have it, courtesy of reader Ceroa.Do you have a unique shot of Azeroth that you'd like to show off to the rest of the world? Tell us about it by e-mailing aroundazeroth@gmail.com! You can attach a picture file or send us a link to one -- and don't worry about formatting, we'll take care of that part.See more of your pics from Around Azeroth.%Gallery-1816%

We gave you some screenshots to caption last week in our Countdown to Burning Crusade, but this week it's your turn to provide us with some screenshots. We're going to do a series of three "best screenshot of location" contests, and we're going to give you some extra lead time on a couple of them, so listen up for the appropriate deadlines. For today, we want to see your best screenshot from Feralas -- anywhere within the zone is kosher, but you'll have to find a way to make it unique, funny, or particularly beautiful to catch our eye. You have until 2pm EST tomorrow, January 9 to send your best Feralas screenshot to us at countdowntobc AT wow.com for a chance to win the analog companion to WoW: the World Of Warcraft The Roleplaying Game. You must include the word "Feralas" in the subject of your email, and your image must be less than 5MB in size. You've got a bit more lead time for the next two "best of location" contests. You have until Wednesday, January 10 at 3pm EST to send us your best screenshot of the Caverns of Time, which you should be able to access (sans the instances) even if you're not in the beta. Send us the best screenshot to countdowntobc AT wow.com with "Caverns of Time" in the subject of your email and you'll take home a 60-day game card. And if you haven't been one of the lucky winners of a 60-day prepaid card so far, you'll have one more chance this weekend. The last "best of location" contest will be two, two, two contests in one: for "Tale of Two Cities" we want you to send in your best/funniest/most original screenshot of either Ironforge or Orgrimmar (you have to choose one and only one -- no double entries allowed). The best Ironforge screenshot winner will walk away with an Alliance crest t-shirt in your choice of size, while the best Orgrimmar screenshot will take home a Horde crest tee; we'll publish the winners and runners up on Friday, so you'll need to get your entries in to countdowntobc AT wow.com by 3pm EST, Thursday January 11. You must include "Tale of Two Cities" in the subject of your email, and all screenshot submissions must be less than 5MB in size. Good luck to all!

  • Around Azeroth: Fishing with ninja

Somehow, basic ninja black doesn't blend very well into the Orgrimmar shadows. But even ninja have to train their fishing skills somewhere, as demonstrated by Targen and Theodosia of Burning Legion in this shot. Do you have a unique shot of Azeroth that you'd like to show off to the rest of the world? Tell us about it by e-mailing aroundazeroth@gmail.com! You can attach a picture file or send us a link to one -- and don't worry about formatting, we'll take care of that part. And don't forget about this week's Around Azeroth caption contest -- we're taking submissions all week and will pick the best of them to show off next Monday!
