Joystiq review: The Eye of Judgment (PS3)
It's not uncommon for video games to feature gameplay dependent upon gimmicks and peripherals, from early 8-bit examples like Gyromite to more modern releases such as Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution, each of which changed the gaming experience by altering how we interact with the games we play. In this way, Sony and SCE Studios Japan's The Eye of Judgment is one of the most ambitious experiments with game design to date, and in leveraging off of the considerable card game experience of Hasbro and its Wizards of the Coast subsidiary, best known for the Magic: The Gathering and Star Wars collectible card games, The Eye of Judgment's pedigree is certainly not one to be taken lightly. Marrying a tabletop card game with the PlayStation 3 has created an experience that is if nothing else unique; unfortunately the lynchpin in this union, the newly launched PlayStation Eye camera, is also the game's Achilles' heel, oftentimes bringing an unwelcome sense of frustration to players gaming in anything but the most ideal settings, something which we covered in much greater detail previously.%Gallery-3181%
Stop-motion animation with EyeCreate
We're expecting some pretty good stop motion animation to hit the web when the PlayStation Eye and Eye Create are released by Sony. Eye Create is a free application, downloadable on the PSN, that allows users to edit their captured videos directly on the PS3. A new post on the PlayStation.blog focuses on stop-motion animation, where a series of still images can be strung together to create the illusion of movement. This is similar to PSP's Go!Cam and Go!Edit program (downloadable from PSP Fanboy). PSP fans took the liberty of create their own pieces of animation, and we expect a similar following from PS3 fans.
EyeCreate will be available as free download on PSN
What we should say before anything else is that EyeCreate isn't a game, necessarily, but an application that will essentially turn your PS3 into a media center that can edit audio, video, and image files so you can sort 'em and send 'em to friends. You will, of course, need the PlayStation Eye peripheral to make use of this application. Don't worry, the PS Eye is available as a standalone peripheral, so you don't have to worry about getting the Eye of Judgment pack if you aren't into that sort of thing.This is only the beginning of a slew of applications and games that will support the new PS Eye, but the best part of EyeCreate is that it is completely free! Yep, you get some software that'll let you tweak a multitude of files for free. That's pretty awesome. There will be more about this application on the official PlayStation Blog later on, so keep an "eye" on that, or just wait and we'll let you know what's up when we learn more. Yes, that was incredibly lame, but we don't care ... so long as you rolled your eyes.
Sony doles out more details on PlayStation Eye
With just under a fortnight to go before folks go a-grabbin' for Sony's PlayStation Eye, a Senior Producer for SCEA has come forward with a few more lingering details about the peripheral. For starters, Sony apparently has plans to integrate the device into other upcoming titles such as SingStar, which will enable users to "make their own personalized music videos to share with family and friends online." Additionally, the EyeCreate software -- which will allow individuals to "save, edit and share PlayStation Eye videos, photos and audio clips" through their PS3 -- will be available as a free download on the PlayStation Store. Finally, those not interested in the bundled Eye of Judgment game can opt for a standalone unit on October 23rd, which is set to ring up at $39.99.
New PS3 screensaver to utilize PlayStation Eye
While LocoRoco Cocoreccho wasn't necessarily the interactive screensaver we were all expecting (it was much more!), it looks like Tori-Emaki will fill its shoes nicely. Additionallly, the screensaver will put the PS3's upcoming PlayStation Eye to use by allowing gamers to control a flock of birds around ancient Asian settings with a wave of their hand.Developed by PlayLogic, it's hard not to compare the "game's" art direction to Okami – arguably one of the very best PS2 titles of all time. There's no word yet on when it will be available, but we can only cleverly deduce it will be after the PS Eye's Oct. 23 release date.
Joystiq's hands-on with the PlayStation Eye
The fanatical crew of card-and-video-game enthusiasts over at Joystiq have apparently had the unique pleasure of a hands-on with the newest and wackiest PS3 accessory, the PlayStation Eye and its bundled game Eye of Judgment. If you'll recall, the interactive, VGA camera is integrated with the Magic: The Gathering-like game, which uses real cards and a mat that the camera is aimed at. We understand the Joystiq team really put the game (and the Eye) through its paces in a 36-hour, pepperoni-pizza-filled, jolt-drinking marathon, which ended when one of the players' chaotic-neutral wizards cast "sleep" on everyone, but exhausted his remaining mana in the process. Joystiq hands-on: PlayStation Eye
One of the most interesting, and certainly most unique video games coming to the PlayStation 3 this year is Sony and SCE Studios Japan's Eye of Judgment, which combines elements of a physical collectible card game with that of a traditional video game for an experience that is, if anything, wholly its own. While the influence of card games like Magic: The Gathering and Pokemon has long been felt in video games, Eye of Judgment represents the first time to our recollection that the marriage of the two mediums has evolved beyond gameplay to take on a more literal meaning. With real cards you hold in your hand, and a playing mat unfolded on the table, it's entirely possible to play Eye of Judgment with no PS3 involvement whatsoever, and even have a good deal of fun doing so. However, as the game comes bundled with the PS3's new PlayStation Eye camera, it seems a shame to leave such shiny new hardware ignored, so when the game showed up at Joystiq proper, we were inclined to put the new device through the wringer. %Gallery-2809%%Gallery-3181%
PlayStation Eye available by itself, for the cheaps
If, for some reason, you don't want to get addicted to the sexiness that will be Eye of Judgment, Sony's got your back. It's the first we've heard of it, but there's definitely an option to buy just the PlayStation Eye peripheral without all the extra goodies. The price is very easy to swallow for the technology you're getting -- forty bucks. That's really not bad at all, huh? But you have to remember, for just thirty dollars more, you get Eye of Judgment, a stand and some other peripheral trinkets. The choice is yours, ultimately, but why grab the fancy new peripheral without a game to play on it?
How to set up and play The Eye of Judgment
Up until recently, details have been sparse in regards to how you'll actually be playing The Eye of Judgment, but just in case you still have some questions, this video should spell everything out for you.While the game seems to live up to its billing, we could have used some battle music when the game transitions to combat mode. The lovely music is nice for a lonely walk in the woods, but when a flock of dwarves is battling a winged demon astride a three-headed beast, we expect to be blasted with some metal ... or even country music at the very least.
Sony's PlayStation Eye gets a release date
For those of you whose salivary glands have been working overtime when thinking about Sony's new PlayStation Eye PS3 camera accessory (and we're sure there's at least one or two of you), you better go get a napkin. According to reports, the interactive, VGA cam will be heading out to stores bundled with Hasrbo's RPG / card game The Eye of Judgment on October 23rd, for the shockingly low price of $69.99. No word on whether that bundle will include the EyeCreate editing software, or when / if the Eye will be available on its own. Hey -- you'll probably want the game anyhow.
The Eye of Judgment to be released Oct. 23 for $70
While Sony still has some work to do to explain Afrika, Mark Valledor, SCEA marketing manager, thought it was about time to shed some light on The Eye of Judgment, so he posted a new video and five things you don't know about the game on the official PlayStation blog. For your reading pleasure, I've condensed it all into a few sentences.The game, which features the word judgment with only one "e" in its title, will be released for $70 on Oct. 23 in North America, followed by a global launch later in the month. Yes, it will be bundled with the PlayStation Eye, and expansion packs will be available to buy further down the line. Lastly, Sony has implemented a system to disallow online cheating by forcing users to register their decks offline. Their decks will then be available to be chosen when they play against an online opponent and will be randomly shuffled and drawn by the game. Sony releases Eye of Judgment press pack
People can say all they want about how the Wii is revolutionizing the gaming industry, but the first time we saw The Eye of Judgment in action, we really knew the next generation of gaming had arrived. And with about a month before the virtual card battler is set to release, Sony has released new preview copies to journalists throughout the land.Games Radar received the awesome Eye of Judgment press pack, which includes the "magic cloth," a deck of cards the PlayStation Eye, the game, and exciting new screens and a trailer.The trailer, which we've kindly embedded after the jump, features two wizards waging war with magical beasts in a spectacular hall, where we're sure many battles of its ilk were once fought. Admittedly, it's a little unspectacular after seeing Sauron whoop Gandalf's ass with real magic, but now, there's just no other way to play the game without a wizard's robe and staff in hand.
Eye of Judgment set looks uber-nerdy, uber-awesome
User Shin-Ra at the PS3Forums has stumbled upon the entire package of the upcoming PlayStation Eye game, Eye of Judgment. Now sporting the subtitle Biolith Rebellion, the set comes with the PS-Eye, stand, card mat and starter deck all in addition to the game itself. While you might be thinking "wow, that's a lot of stuff ... it's probably really expensive," you'd be surprised to learn that the cost for all of this is only around 10,000 yen. If you translate that into US dollars, it's around $80. Around there. We think it's a great deal, especially for the innovative technology you'll be investing in![via PS3Forums]
Eye of Judgment's creatures and card types
PlayFrance recently sat down with Aurélien Poma, the Community Manager from SCEE and got him to spill the beans on the upcoming PS Eye title, the Eye of Judgment. Since the interview was in French, we had to rely on our friends at Gamers-Creed to do the translation and luckily they've done a great write-up on it. Utilizing the PlayStation Eye, the game is played using a pack of collectible cards (with varying rarities and upcoming expansion packs) and an included 'game mat' which you lay out in front of the PS Eye. Players draw five cards for use in taking over the playing field. By placing a card on the field, the camera will scan it and create the monster in full 3D on the TV screen. Additional information about your monster (strength, special powers, type of attack) can be found on the card itself, a nice touch which keeps the on-screen game from getting too cluttered.They've also confirmed that there will be online play, a fantastic addition for lonely hermits with no local friends to play with. It will be interesting to see how they deal with cheating though, seems like that would be a pretty bad risk in this sort of game. In another cool little tidbit, Sony mentioned that the game can be played entirely without the Sixaxis, meaning you won't be swapping back and forth from the gameboard to the controller in the course of a match.A ton of additional information about gameplay and card types was given in the interview, so check it out! PlayStation Eye video quality is lookin' good
Games Radar has had their hands on the upcoming PlayStation Eye for a while and have posted an article with some quick impressions and a short video showing off the video quality of the PS Eye (embedded after the break). The video is on the small size, but even so it looks like the quality of the camera has definitely increased. A lack of compression artifacts make the image amazingly clear and smooth compared to the EyeToy of yesteryear. Hopefully GR will update their hands-on with more information soon - intrigued fans want to know more!

Not only is it one of the most advanced peripherals ever for a console, it may be one of the most advanced peripherals ever. Packaged with the camera will be the game Eye of Judgment, a card-battle game that plays out with the assistance of the camera. It's hard to explain, but it's amazing. These screenshots aren't the most impressive graphically, but they definitely show how fascinating the gameplay will be. In one shot, it seems the way you angle your card will alter the direction of an attack or spell. Pretty detailed! Expect this game to hit shelves in October. Hasbro to provide trading cards for PS3's Eye of Judgment
Hasbro has announced a collaboration with Sony Computer Entertainment that will see the toy maker produce trading cards for the PlayStation 3's upcoming camera-based card battler, Eye of Judgment. No stranger to tabletop games, thanks to its Wizards of the Coast subsidiary and Magic: The Gathering series, Hasbro has agreed to create, manufacture and distribute all the cards used in the PS3 game.Eye of Judgment promises to take tabletop gaming in an elaborate (and surely more expensive) direction by adding the PlayStation Eye camera and a video game console to the normal process of lining up cards and having paper monsters clobber each other with increasingly obscure statistics. Instead of using your boring, standard definition imagination to envision the excitement, the PS3 will scan the cards and generate 3D models of the creatures in play. Of course, it doesn't sound as exciting when you put it like that, so be thankful for Sony's Phil Harrison having stored up a whole deck of hyperbole trap cards. "The Eye of Judgment represents a totally new genre in gaming," says the corporate executive.
