Nokia and Yahoo announcing partnership Monday?
Whether you call it prescient omniscience or just dumb luck, The Onion's latest lampoon seems to have correctly predicted the Y!phone (pictured above). Or at least something close. We just received our invite to a Yahoo press event on Monday where CEO Carol Bartz will try to wow us with the following: "An exciting announcement about providing global consumers with rich online and mobile experiences, and bringing forward a new era in keeping consumers connected." Kara Swisher of All Things Digital says that the announcement involves building Yahoo apps and services, including email and search, into a range of Nokia devices. The partnership, dubbed "Project Nike" after the Greek goddess of victory, has apparently been in the works for years. A "Yahoo-centric phone" is not expected to be part of the announcement according to Swisher's sources. For Yahoo's part, partnering with the world's largest maker of cellphones is likely its best chance to compete in the mobile space against Google's booming Android OS. The benefit for Nokia in partnering with an also-ran is less clear though -- guess that's why this is a Yahoo press event and not a Nokia-sponsored one. We asked Nokia the dealio but it refused to comment on "market speculation." Hey, we tried.
Nokia teases 'everyone connect,' keep your hands to yourselves until then
No idea what this is but the Twitterverse has an inkling that we'll see Ovi Maps integrated with Nokia Messaging. Jury's still out on hardware like, say, the N8-00 -- though as the rumored flagship S^3 device we'd expect its reveal to be a bit more formal than a countdown.
Intel to be part of Nokia's MWC press conference -- a new Booklet, or something more?
Well, this is interesting -- Intel just sent us an invitation to Nokia's press event at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week. We're told that the two companies will update us on the "latest developments" from their relatively new relationship, before Nokia launches into its solo presser directly afterwards. That could mean pretty much anything from a ho-hum Atom N450 refresh of the Booklet 3G to a fire-breathing Moorestown Maemo 5 phone, so we're obviously extremely curious to see what goes down -- our money is on the more conservative side of things, since we're thinking Intel just wants to have a presence at MWC, but we do love to be surprised.
Nokia Ovi press event this Thursday, 'big news' promised
If you're a Nokia lover who is currently jealous of all the Apple fans and their current state of delicious expectation, we're happy to say that now you too can savor a little anticipation. Nokia is sending out invitations to an event this Thursday, January 21, indicating it will "share some big news with you." Well, not with you exactly, but rather with us media-types, and you can be sure we will then pass it along posthaste. But what will Nokia be sharing? We hate to spoil the fun, but we can't imagine it'll be anything other than the revamped Ovi Store the company has been talking up lately -- that said, we're always up for a surprise.
Google announces Android press conference for January 5th
Well well. Look at this. Taking a page from the CES-challenging Apple / Macworld playbook, Google has announced a press event on January 5th (just like we told you) in Mountain View, stating: With the launch of the first Android-powered device just over a year ago, we've seen how a powerful, open platform can spur mobile product innovation. And this is just the beginning of what's possible. Please join us in Mountain View on January 5, for an Android press gathering. If this lines up with the news we've seen recently, it's likely a Nexus One announcement will be the order of the day, and most (if not all) of your nagging questions will get answered. You know we'll be there live... so hang on to your hats, and mark down the date!

It's Berlin and it's Sony: that should be enough to whet the ol' curiosity. We're here live at the Sony IFA 2009 press event hoping to get a glimpse at Sony's European, nay, global strategy from this day forward. Good thing for us, Sony has given us permission to blog on its WiFi network. Yay!
Rumor: Apple TV news on Sept. 9
The rumors are flying around the upcoming Apple press event like bees in a clover field; bees goaded on by Piper Jaffray's Senior Research Analyst, Gene Munster. On Monday, he suggested that the iPhone will be on multiple carriers in the US by next year. Yesterday, he predicted that Steve Jobs himself could make an appearance at next week's press event. Today, it's the Apple TV he's after. Citing short delivery times on the current 40GB model, he suspects that the 40GB model will be phased out and the 160GB model made less expensive. Even if this does happen, we expect that Steve (or whomever) won't mention it. It wouldn't be the first time Apple made a change to the Apple TV immediately following a press event without having said a word. For now, keep buzzing, little bees. Update: Jim Dalrymple at The Loop has poured cold water on Munster's Apple TV prognostications. Dalrymple reports "very reliable sources" denying any introductions for non-music products at the 9/9 event.
What new goodies await us on the 9th?
So, Apple has confirmed that there will indeed be an event next Wednesday, September 9th. The image on the invitations indicates iPods, or at least "music", will be the focus of the shindig.Will we see new iPods with cameras? How about iTunes 9 with some whiz-bang new social networking features? And what about that bright yellow underwater elephant in the room?While the date is almost too tasty to pass up, I can't imagine (pun intended) that The Beatles will even be mentioned during the event. Why? The slogan the iPod silhouette girl is rockin' to is "It's only rock and roll, but I like it." Now, I'm a little younger than the relevant time period, but I've heard that neither The Rolling Stones nor The Fab Four would be thrilled with the mix up.So, what do you think? Apple confirms Sept. 9 press event
At last Apple has begun distributing invitations to a press event scheduled for September 9th. The image on the invitation, which features a classic silhouette dancer, pretty much confirms our suspicion that this particular dog-and-pony show feature the iPod (now with cameras! ...maybe). Apple typically introduces new iPods in September.This year's event will take place at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco on September 9th at 10:00 a.m Pacific time. Perhaps then we'll see that secret television ad. In any case, we think it's safe for the pro-tablet theorists sit this one out. Maybe next time, folks.Thanks to everyone who sent this in!
Archos event June 11th: 5-inch Android tablet with voice expected
This one's a bit of a stretch but totally plausible. Archos just announced a press conference in Paris on June 11th -- that's a fact. However, the choice of Android-green in the invite above has caused widespread speculation that we'll be getting a first peep at Archos' heavily rumored Android-based device. Remember, TI was kind enough to give us the full specs on a 10-mm thin Archos Internet Media Tablet "with all the functionalities of a premium smartphone" back in February. At that time, TI listed specs like a 5-inch high-resolution screen, Adobe Flash support, TV recording, HD playback, 500GB of storage, 7 hours of video playback off battery, voice and HSUPA data radio all powered by a smokin' OMAP3440 processor from TI. iPhone OS 3.0: Dreams really could come true
In case you haven't checked iCal lately, the iPhone OS event is only hours away! What that means (aside from all of the tubes being clogged with rumors on what the new OS version will feature) is that it's time for another TUAW wishlist! Please know that while these are all going to be the best guesses on the whole wide web, they are still in fact just that, guesses. Many of the staff are visiting SXSW and having the grandest of times; the rest of us are working from our satellite office (on the moon, actually). However, we thought it would be a great disservice to not begin the discussion on what you will definitely probably hopefully see in Apple's latest release of the iPhone OS.Now, sit back and let the reality distortion field wash over you as we wax philosophically about today's press event. Apple event will highlight iPhone OS 3.0
Earlier today, Apple issued a press event announcement that promises to offer a "sneak peek" at iPhone OS 3.0. It'll go down at 10am Pacific on March 17th in Apple's Town Hall building in Cupertino.As usual, the whole thing is rather cryptic. From the "blueprint" graphic and text, it sounds like the event will be limited to an overview (but not a release) of iPhone OS 3.0. Perhaps we'll learn a bit about any changes to the SDK as well. What would you like to see? Copy and paste, for sure. Push notifications for 3rd party apps next. Anything else?Finally, we don't know who will be doing the talking. Typically, we just assumed it would be Steve.
Rumor: mini packaging and an Apple event
Update 7:30p: More of our friends around the Mac web are starting to dig out the details on the expected hardware updates tomorrow, and they could be substantial. In a recent talkcast, I called a big old "Bogus" on that model, citing all those USB ports as the issue. If I'm as wrong as wrong can be, you'll be the first to know.Even though the current Mini features its port lineup on the back of the box, something doesn't look quite right about this layout. Is that processor icon in the center an NVIDIA GPU, or an Intel chip? Maybe the box is legit, maybe it's a fake based on the info from the video.What a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive.
Amazon Kindle 2 launching on Monday -- we'll be there live!
There's not much of a surprise in store now, seeing as we've already seen official photos of Amazon's newest iteration of its e-book reader (and gotten a handful of info on price and release date). Still, we'll be there liveblogging and blowing it out Engadget style come 10AM ET Monday morning -- and who knows, maybe Bezos will announce some other colors.
Next week's Nikon press preview moved to November
So it seems Nikon had a press preview all setup for October 22nd, reportedly to discuss the forthcoming MX format. We're not precisely sure if this ties directly in with that mysterious ad we saw at the front end of this month or not, but either way, it looks like the world will be waiting to find out. Reportedly, the new date for the conference will be on or around November 20th in Denmark, but we'd even take that with a hint of salt for the time being. T-Mobile goes live with G1 website
It's one thing to appear on a website before being officially outed. It's another to have a web portal designed specifically for a handset. On the eve of its official debut in the Big Apple, T-Mobile has launched the definitive G1 website, complete with a G1 logo, the time and date of tomorrow's press event, a few tabs sure to be chock full of juicy details just as soon as said event closes, and most importantly, a pre-order button (of sorts) in order to sign up for what we can only fathom to be a notification of availability. 10:30AM tomorrow morning -- we'll be there, you'll be there.
Analysts: Sept. 9 event will underwhelm
Some people are never happy. Others are clairvoyant. Now, they've all come together to complain about a press event that hasn't even taken place.Barron's is reporting a fall in AAPL yesterday on rumors that the Sept. 9 press event will be underwhelming. While new iPods, iTunes and iPod touch pricing are expected, new Macs are not. Hence the downturn.This is another example of disappointment over an artificial scenario, which we've seen many times before. Each year at WWDC, Apple observers complain when Steve fails to produce a slew of consumer products. Well, that's a developers' conference, not a trade show. This is the same thing. The invitation to Tuesday's event suggests "iPod." To expect Macs is silly.
Player posts an abundance of AoC videos from Norway press event
A lucky player by the name of Avery, from Age of Conan guild The Acolytes, won a trip to attend Funcom's press event in Norway and has uploaded a huge amount of footage. There are videos on questing, raiding, mounts, music and more from AoC. Heck, there's even a video of the real-life mounted fighting that was performed for the event attendees in the parking lot outside. A few of these videos are embedded after the break, and this post at The Acolytes forums has a list of all of them, and includes a write-up of Avery's opinion on the crafting system at the current time. It's official: Apple press event Sept. 5
We heard a rumor not long ago, and today Engadget confirms the date: Apple will hold a special press event on Sept. 5th. The invitation they received (where's ours, Apple?!?) looks like coverflow as displayed by an iPhone. Hmmm...The invite is as cryptic as always, so I guess it's up to us to provide wild and baseless conjecture. Let's get started.See you then, folks.Thanks to everyone who sent this in!
