  • Frank West can be Proto Man in Dead Rising 2: Off the Record

There's a surprise lurking in Dead Rising 2: Off the Record that is most decidedly not undead -- Proto Man! You can unlock Proto Man's outfit, shield and a working arm cannon through a series of steps so strangely complex that we're shocked anyone figured this easter egg out at all. Apparently you can snag the boots no problem, but to get the shield and blaster you have to beat the game with an S rank, medal in all 30 challenges, defeat Jack in a game of poker at the safe house, and then start that file again (not a new game), htka of GameFAQs posted. Or you can just watch the above video and pretend you're controlling Proto Frank West Man. You can even make your own sound effects. We won't tell anyone. If you'll remember, there was a similar unlock in Dead Rising, but it was bluer.

  • First Mega Man 9 DLC available

The first two downloadable content updates for Mega Man 9 are officially available today. The first, Endless Attack Mode, offers a new, never-ending endurance-style level, for 300 Wii Points. The second, more widely discussed update, adds a playable Proto Man to the game, for 200 points. Proto Man can slide and charge his weapon (though the blast isn't as large as a fully-charged Mega Buster), and he has a shield that blocks shots while jumping, but he also has double the recoil and takes double the damage of Mega Man. Furthermore, he can't use the Shop and he has no story of his own. Most importantly -- and about which we are the most pleased -- the Proto Man whistle plays at the beginning of every life or every level. You can read more about the details of the Proto Man DLC here, or, of course, you could go download it! Just look in the "Downloadable Content" area of the game instead of somewhere in the Wii Shop. You wouldn't want to feel as stupid as we did.%Gallery-32414%

We told you last month Proto Man was headed for Mega Man 9 as a selectable character via DLC. Now we've got some screenshots of the guy in action. As a reminder, here are the future DLC modes for Mega Man 9, as initially revealed through the Wii version's manual: Endless Attack (estimated price: $2.99): "Test your skills on a stage without end. Try to break the record for getting the farthest. Results will be displayed in the Rankings. Not compatible with Challenges." Proto Man Mode (estimated price: $1.99): "Play the game as Proto Man. You can use the shield while jumping. Some of Proto Man's abilities may differ from Mega Man's. There is no story for Proto Man. Not compatible with Rankings or Challenges." Hero Mode (estimated price: $0.99): "Play the game with a more difficult level of enemy distribution. Not compatible with Rankings or Challenges." Superhero Mode (estimated price: $0.99): "Play the game with a super difficult level of enemy distribution. Not compatible with Rankings or Challenges." Special Stage (estimated price: $0.99): "Gives you another Time Attack Stage to try, including a new Boss at the end! Results will be displayed in the Rankings. Not compatible with Challenges." Prices are estimated based on their cost in Wii points. Despite its rigorous, retro stylings and old-fashioned platforming, not everything in Mega Man 9 is rooted in the past -- in fact, not every thing is in Mega Man 9. Nintendo Wii Fanboy peered into the downloadable game's online instruction manual (they're really terrible at it, you see) and discovered what appears to be a list of all the game's planned downloadable content, including dates and prices. There are five pieces in total, with the first two modes, namely "Proto Man Mode" and "Endless Attack," scheduled to arrive on October 6th or 200 Wii Points and 300 Wii Points, respectively. The plans also reveal "Hero Mode," "Special Stage" and "Superhero Mode" due on October 20th. While you examine the full details after the break, we'll check in with Capcom whether all (or any) of these apply to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Mega Man 9. Gallery: Mega Man 9 DLC

  • Proto Man playable in Mega Man 9 ... for a price

Want to perform a slide tackle or charge shot in Mega Man 9 this Thursday? Sorry, you're out of luck. Mega Man seems to have lost those abilities in his transition back to the NES era (even though he had those abilities from Mega Man 3 onwards, which was a NES title). There may still be a chance, though. GamesRadar is reporting that Proto Man will be a downloadable character and will have both of these abilities. You'd better get your nickels and dimes ready, though, because he's not going to be free. He should be arriving on the US PSN store during the week of October 6th and will cost you $1.99. Think of him as an "easy mode." From what we've played of Mega Man 9, by October 6th, you'll be screaming for an easy mode.

We know that gaming enthusiasts absolutely love it when game developers announce DLC for their titles before said titles are released -- that's why we're sure you'll be pleased to hear that Mega Man's morally ambiguous predecessor, Proto Man, will be available to download as a playable character in all versions of Mega Man 9 for two American dollars (160, 200 Wii Points). His core controls will be similar to the Blue Bomber's, though he does come with a few extra abilities -- for instance, he'll be able to use his shield to deflect certain projectiles, perform a sliding manuever, and inspire heated comments about DLC price gouging on internet message boards. Neat, huh?

Continuing the long standing tradition of annoying customers by announcing (or releasing) downloadable content for a game that hasn't even come out yet, Capcom revealed to GamesRadar that Proto Man will find his way into Mega Man 9 by way of DLC. An additional 160MS Points could net you your very own playable Proto who controls similar to good ol' Megs, other than the fact that he can slide and charge his blasts. Great addition or price gouging? We'll find soon as Mega Man 9 is set to release on October 1.
