  • Japanese PSN updates with six more PS1 titles

Japan is getting more PS1 classics added to the PSN. Among the new titles are: Jade Cocoon, an RPG; Crash Team Racing, obviously it's Crash Bandicoot plus go-karts; and lastly, Acid which is ... er, we don't know. It's said to be an action title -- if that helps. There are also three slot machine games at ¥300. That's half price off the normal ¥600 the other games are going for.News of six new PS1 games for Japan is quite a huge contrast to North America's ... zero. While it would certainly be ideal to have more vintage games on our side of the earth, we still need to remember that a tangled web of legalities are what's keeping things from moving further. Rights and ownership to digital content ... is there any program that can be implemented to speed up such processes?[Via PSP GadgetZ]

Four more PS1 classics are hitting the Japanese PSN. The most notable one of the lot is Hudson's Bomberman. What's good about this title is that you can pick it up from the Japanese store and you can still play it just fine without any knowledge of the Japanese language. Playing it on the PS3 shouldn't cause any problems but playing on the PSP means that multi-player won't be possible. The other three games include Lord Monarch and Wizard's Harmony 2 which are both strategy RPGs. The last is Dig-a-Dig Pukka, a digging game. All titles are ¥600 ($5.73) each.[Via Siliconera]

The second installment of the Metal Gear Retrospective from the masters of recollection over at GameTrailers recently dropped, bringing with it a flood of joyous, espionage-flavored memories from our youth. The games featured in this edition are centered around Kojima's only exploit on Sony's seminal home console, Metal Gear Solid -- that includes the GameCube remake, and the bizarre VR Missions standalone game. Pull up a chair, plug the controller into the second port, and let the warm waves of nostalgia wash over you as you relive the events that transpired at Shadow Moses.

In preparation of Metal Gear Solid 4's release, Konami has unleashed a Kojima classic onto the PSN. No, not the original Metal Gear Solid (that's already available in Japan!). It's Policenauts. This is one of Kojima's earlier works: a graphic adventure game, similar to Kojima's Snatcher. Through its point and click interface, players take control of a cryogenically frozen Jonathan Ingram, who wakes up in the year 2040. His estranged wife asks for his help in finding her missing second husband. After her murder, Jonathan has no choice but to use the clues provided to him and go on a journey through space to fulfill his dead wife's wish.Kojima's Policenauts is joined by another PS1 title, Nectaris, in today's PSN update.

Reader Matt G. sent in a tip, detailing a number of PS1 titles rated by the ESRB that have yet to be released on PSP/PS3. These downloadable classics should arrive on the PSN some time in the future -- but when? Wipeout XL (E) Jet Moto 3 (E) Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo (E) Buster Bros. Collection (E) Street Fighter Alpha (T) -- previously discovered, not released Rayman (E) Castlevania Chronicles (T) -- previously discovered, not released SCEA has been slow to make PS1 classics available on the PS Store. We're eagerly awaiting a version of Puzzle Fighter we can take on the go.

  • Bishi Bashi Special 'first of several' in the coming months

Today Konami Europe has released a rather tardy press release to announce last Thursday's release of Bishi Bashi Special on the European PSN Store. The press release contains the normal PR speak about how thrilled Konami is that Bishi Bashi Special is their first PS1 game released over the PSN, how awesome the game is and how exciting the whole situation is. Nestled at the end, however, is the statement that Bishi Bashi Special is "the first of several classic Konami PSOne titles heading to the PlayStation Store in the coming months," with more detailed announcements "to follow." Sounds great to us. We've always been strong advocates of the sadly infrequent PS1 releases. Obviously, at the top of our list would be the original Metal Gear Solid, which would tie perfectly with the release of MGS4 in just over a month. What other Konami titles would you like to see gracing the European store in the coming months?[Via Press Release]

  • Three more PS1 games on Japanese PSN

Three more PS1 titles grace the Japanese PlayStation Store. It seems they're back on track with the PS1 updates after taking a two-week hiatus for the store redesign. The three games are: Athena no Kateiban: Family Game, a board game; Magical Drop F, a puzzle game; and lastly, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage, an action platformer developed by Insomniac Games. While the Japanese get back to building their downloadable PS1 catalog, what can we expect out of North America's PS1 offerings? Well, a store redesign not only means a graphical face lift; it could also symbolize a new direction with new content. With that in mind, let's hope the direction we're heading to means more PS1 games finding a place on the North American PlayStation Store, and a home on our PSPs.

  • Six PS1 games hit Japanese PSN

Several PS1 games have hit the Japanese PSN today. Six in total, actually. One of them was the previously announced Metal Gear Solid. It's a pretty diverse set of games, here's the full list: Atelier Elie Crash Bash (aka Crash Bandicoot Carnival) Dezaemon Kids! Master of Monsters: Disciples of Gaia Metal Gear Solid Pro Mahjong Kiwame Plus II That makes: one tactical espionage thriller in MGS, one RPG in Atelier Elie, a strategy adventure in Master of Monsters, Mahjong Plus II speaks for itself, Crash Bash is a party game, and Dezaemon Kids! is some sort of art title for children. Pretty nice list; however, MGS is top dog this week.

  • Blood Omen and Pandemonium rated by ESRB

The ESRB strikes again and we learn of another couple of PS1 games the should be heading to the PSN. When? Who knows. Could be tomorrow, could be never -- (hint: It's not tomorrow). As for the games themselves, we're totally stoked. Pandemonium! was an awesome game in its day, but Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain was even better. We at PS3 Fanboy are huge fans of the Legacy of Kain series and have very fond memories of Blood Omen. Hopefully these games will grace the PSN Store soon, because America needs some more decent PS1 titles. People who missed out on Blood Omen should be required to download it. While it may not be the greatest entry of the Kain series (it came before Amy Hennig, of Uncharted fame, came on board and crafted the wonderful Soul Reaver storyline) it's still a narrative masterwork. We're looking forward to restoring the Pillars of Nosgoth to their former glory again sometime in, hopefully, the near future. Vae Victis![Via Kotaku]

Perhaps to celebrate the release of the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 4, Konami's classic tactical espionage action game is hitting the PSN. The downloadable version of the original PS1 Metal Gear Solid will arrive in Japan on March 21st and will cost 600 yen. Hopefully, other territories will be able to get their Snake on as well.[Thanks, Joseph C.!]

Love obscure Japanese PS1 games? As both American and European PS Stores continue to get neglected with PS1 games, Japan continues to expand its library with four new titles this week: Spyro the DragonAddie no OkurimonoGakkou wo TsukurouKawa no Nushi Tsuri According to Siliconera, the most obscure title of the list, Addie no Okurimono, "is a puzzle game developed by Sony Computer Entertainment that gives players a Da Vinci Code-like toy to spell words." There's so many random games in Japan that just never come out here, huh?

  • Cowon Q5W does SNES emulation with a PS1 controller

If you're an owner or prospective owner of the Cowon Q5W, you're probably impressed with its myriad audio and video playback capabilities -- but did you know it can handle emulation as well? Apparently, since the device is based on Windows CE, it's fairly easy to get game emulators up and running on the 5-inch PMP. In the video you can watch a setup of what appears to be an SNES imitator playing both Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario Kart (two favorites of our SNES fanboy, Paul Miller, we suspect). The games are controlled by a decidedly non-Nintendo accessory -- a PS1 controller connected via USB adapter. With that recent $50 price drop, this may be just the incentive you need to spring for a shiny new edition to your gadget library.

Japan's PLAYSTATION Store has been updated yet again with a number of PS1 games. Most interesting on today's update is Dezaemon Plus, a PS1 title that allows you to create your own shoot 'em up game. Spencer from Siliconera laments that there is no online sharing mode added to this release, because being able to share your game creations would've have been quite awesome. Also available this week for 600 yen each: Dezaemon Plus Pro Mahjong Kiwame Plus Kuroi Hitomi no Noir ~ Cielgris Fantasm ~ Block Kuzoshi WaiWai Kusayakyu

Will the sequel fare better? Maybe. But probably not.

Namco's lovable platformer from the PS1 era is getting resurrected. The PEGI (European equivalent of the ESRB) has rated the game for the PLAYSTATION Network. Klonoa was a hit amongst hardcore gamers for its art and unique gameplay. Juxtaposing 2D gameplay in a 3D environment was pretty exciting when it first came out. We wonder if the game has survived the test of age. [Source: PS3 Fanboy]In other news, the Japanese Store has recently been updated with I.Q. and Arc the Lad III. [Source: PSPHyper]

  • Retro Review: Crash Bandicoot 2

Crash Bandicoot 2Price: $5.99Original Release Date: October 31, 1997Recommended. Crash's second outing on PS1 has hit the PS Store. While the original romp was an enjoyable experience (that we recommended), it's clear that the sequel is an improvement in every single way possible. From the get-go, one can tell that the visuals are filled with far more detail and animation than the original. Although the story gives little reason for Crash to continue his adventure, it creates a far more manageable means of navigating from level to level. Crash can warp to any level he chooses, and will be able to tackle the challenges in any order he chooses. However, the best addition to the game is the ability to save any time you want. The original featured an archaic system that allowed players to save a limited number of times. With the ability to save in between each level, Crash Bandicoot 2 is far more suitable for handheld play.

  • Retro Review: Warhawk

    01.11.2008

Warhawk Price: $5.99 Original Release Date: November 10, 1995 Not Recommended. It seems unfair to capitalize on the popularity of the PS3 multiplayer game, Warhawk. Although largely heralded when it first arrived on PS1 more than a decade ago, it's clear that this PS1 legend hasn't aged well. Every aspect of the game feels antiquated, from the dated visuals, painful cinemas, and frustrating controls that simply don't translate well on the PSP (the PS3 controller works far better). An ominous feeling sinks in when you experience the game's introductory sequence. Real actors are rarely used in modern game cinemas -- for good reason! While there is a certain charm in the camp on display, the cinematics do little do actually further the paper-thin story that's being told. The PS1 original has as much narrative as the PS3 sequel (that is, none at all).
