Connoisseurs of incremental system updates, to your PS3s! Sony has officially let slip version 2.60 of the PS3 firmware, the details of which we reported earlier today. The update servers are being hammered as of this writing, what with the inability to go online with your PS3 unless it's running the latest system software and all. If you've been pining for new ways to harness the Cell processor to achieve Maximum Photo Viewing Awesomeness™, the incoming PlayStation 3 firmware update (version 2.60) will satiate your wanton cravings with the aptly titled Photo Gallery. Joking aside, we're impressed by the sheer number of sorting options, including a few oddballs like the relative age of depicted people or the number of smiles. For a better picture of how the app works, check out the video after the break.Firmware 2.60 also adds DivX 3.11 support -- a blessing for those of you who still have ripped movies from 1999. Additionally, non-PSN members will be able to access the PS Store to browse for demos and other free goodies. According to the official PS blog, the update is "coming soon."[Via PS3 Fanboy]

Sony just dropped some details on its upcoming 2.60 firmware update for the PS3. The big thrust of the update is a new Photo Gallery app, which can sort by various EXIF data, but also the actual content of the image itself, including colors used, number of people in the photo, how old they are, and facial expressions they used when you pulled out your powdered-blue Kodak to take a few historical snapshots. Naturally you can build slideshows with music and the like. Sony's also adding with this update guest access to the PlayStation Store and DivX 3.11 support. If that's not enough magic to get you riled up, Sony's also pushing out a PSP update, firmware 5.03 that addresses "security vulnerabilities" (we wonder what that could be?) and some stability issues. There's a video walkthrough of the PS3 update after the break.Read - PS3 v2.60Read - PSP v5.03

We're still not over Sony's trickeration -- which led us to believe the version 2.53 firmware update was hitting prior to the US Thanksgiving holiday -- but we're not ones to turn down a free update under any circumstances. As of now (as in, right now), Sony's PlayStation 3 can support full screen embedded Flash videos courtesy of the latest firmware, so there's really no excuse for you not firing up the System Update and sucking it down. Get to it![Via PS3 Fanboy, thanks to everyone who sent this in]

The UK's semi-official PlayStation blog, ThreeSpeech, has published a Sony Computer Entertainment Europe press release on PS3 firmware 2.5 and PSP firmware 5.0, which includes the line: "Both system software updates will be released on 15th October." Hey, that's ... tomorrow! The Oct. 15 date is also backed up by a post on SCEE's official forums from one of its community leads. All indications point towards tomorrow being the day both platforms will get tricked out with the new features we posted about yesterday, plus a couple of surprises – most notably Flash 9 support for the PS3's web browser. We've dropped SCEA a line for confirmation on a North American rollout of the firmware tomorrow.

Sony today announced the specifics of its forthcoming PS3 and PSP system updates, which will introduce a number of convenience features on the console front and (most notably) the PS Store on its handheld platform. We got an early look at what you can expect from the new firmware, which, although not specifically dated, Sony expects to release within the month.PS3 firmware 2.5 introduces more detailed friends list information, including how long it has been since a friend signed onto PSN. The PS Store has been tweaked slightly to include a splash screen and an icon in the top right corner for inputting PSN Card and voucher codes directly from the storefront. Additionally, PSN sign-up and account management are no longer web-based in this firmware.Support for the upcoming, official PS3 Bluetooth headset debuts in this firmware, as does the option to have the system automatically turn off once background downloads have completed. (Unlike Xbox 360, the PS3 does not go into a "low power" state when this option is selected.) The system's settings now include a "Power Saving" option, where users can choose to have their controller automatically turn off after 10 minutes of inactivity; the console can be set to auto-off after one, three, or five hours.Sony has also included a new chapter thumbnail creation option for use during video file playback, with increments of one, two, and five minutes. The new firmware also includes hooks for developers to implement a screenshot function in their games; the feature will only work in games whose devs have implemented it via a new library. Read on past the break for details on PSP firmware 5.0.

Xbox 360 owners can keep their biannual complete overhaul of the dashboard and all its features, PS3 owners are getting their consoles spruced up every couple of weeks it seems. Why just this morning there was a brand new version of the console's firmware that made its way online. What new features can you expect? Well, according to Sony, 2.42 "improves the playback quality of some PlayStation 3 and PlayStation format software." ... Hey, we said the updates were frequent, we never said they weren't vague.

After issues were reported with the PlayStation 3's 2.40 firmware update, it appears the update has been completely pulled from the Network. This blogger had not updated yet and, when attempting to, was told the latest version was already installed. A tipster reported the same thing. We've contacted Sony for comment and will update as soon as we hear back. If you haven't updated yet, give it a shot and let us know if you're successful. [Update: Sony just updated the PlayStation blog stating that it has "temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline" due to "a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3."]%Gallery-26426%[Thanks, Ian]

Right now, you're probably at work, reading this at your cubicle, wondering how exactly your two college degrees and years of hard work and ambition got you to where you are now. Meanwhile, our pals at PS3 Fanboy are at home, probably in their underwear, futzing around with PS3 firmware 2.40, high-fiving each other every time they find something "totally rad." This one took quite a bit of digging, but we agree it's pretty important. The updated PSN Store brought Sony's web-based circa 1997 shopping experience into the 21st century, but it wasn't without fault. Most notably, the tiny icons often didn't communicate the content very well ... that is, if they ever loaded. Yeah, it had caching issues too. So, we're happy to report that as of today, the PSN Store has a new "view mode" which puts things into a list format, as seen above and, whaddyaknow, they're caching images now too so everything should be lickity-split!

With the help of PSN director of operations, Eric Lampel, PlayStation.Blog has compiled a Firmware v2.40 FAQ, answering many of our most common questions. In most cases, with "No." Voice messaging? No. In-game web browsing? Negative. In-game display settings? Nope. In-game shopping? Uh-uh. In-game music streaming? Pfft. Cross-game invites? Sorry. Well, okay, what about Trophies -- will they make a funky little noise when unlocked (like Achievements!)? Of course not ... er, wait a minute: "I got an email from Eric asking me to update this post; there *will* be a sound effect when a user unlocks a trophy. You'll be hearing it soon enough. Hopefully a lot."%Gallery-26426%[Via PS3 Fanboy] Check out more information about Firmware 2.40's features, including the Trophy system and video of the in-game XMB in action.

Following months of rumors, speculation, and – most of all – waiting, Sony has officially unveiled version 2.40 of the PlayStation 3's operating system and XrossMediaBar (XMB) interface. Joystiq got a look at it in action last week and can finally unzip our lips about what we saw.In a nutshell, the update introduces most of the features we've seen floating around as rumors for some time. Here's the short list of what you can now do without exiting from games: In-game XMB (a quick tap of the PS button brings it up) View game-specific Trophies (We'll have more on this major feature at 8AM EST / 5AM PST) Time / date display Send text messages to PSN users on your friends list Access accessory settings, such as Bluetooth pairing and voice changer View and manage downloads Quits game directly from an icon under the "Game" section of the XMB Search the web using the Google Search option under "Network" (similar to the latest PSP firmware) Launch directly into another game from the one you're currently playing Play music tracks stored on the HDD in games that support this feature Access a new on-screen music player interface (when listening to your own tracks in supported titles) Sony hasn't announced a release date for its latest firmware update, stating only that it will be "very soon." The official press release says the firmware is coming July 2 (this Wednesday!). There are quite a few rumored / hoped for features that aren't finding their way into this release. There are also a number of quibbles with the functionality of the features that did make the cut. We go in-depth with our likes and dislikes of firmware 2.40 right here.

We still don't know when we'll get our dual-shocked mitts on PS3 firmware 2.40, but, if a recent post from CVG is to be believed, we now know what you'll be able to do through the sexy new in-game XMB. The features, which they say came from a super-secret inside source, include: View, send, receive messages Manage downloads Set the vibration feature of the controller Manage Bluetooth devices Use the voice changer ...and several others that we've put after the break. Assuming the list is legit, what do you think? Is this the in-game functionality you've been pining for?[Via PSPF]

That was fast. Just a matter of hours after mentioning it on its official blog, SCEA has flipped the switch and gone live with v2.36 of the PlayStation 3 firmware. According to the release notes, this revision merely introduces some stability fixes for certain PS1 titles. The real biggie everyone's waiting for is firmware 2.4, which today was confirmed to include in-game XMB support along with the introduction of "trophies," something Sony promises we'll learn more about "soon."Just when we'd come back from the suggested 15-minute break from MGS4, too![Thanks, SoCoolCurt!]

  • PS3 firmware 2.40 said to be bringing in-game XMB, trophies

    by

    05.30.2008

It's not confirmed by Sony just yet, but Videogaming247 says it has it on "good authority" that the upcoming version 2.40 firmware update for the PS3 will at long last bring with it in-game XMB, as well as the slightly less-anticipated trophy support. If those sources are to be believed, the update will be dropping sometime in June, with some speculation further pointing to a release in advance of Metal Gear Solid 4's June 12th launch. There's apparently still some testing to be done to ensure that the in-game XMB will work with all titles, however, and it seems like features like trophies and user-music via XMB will only be supported in games created with the new developers tools that have apparently already been released in advance of the firmware update.[Via PS3 Fanboy, thanks John]
