While North America gets punchy with a brawler-themed sale this week, PlayStation Network members in Europe enjoy a region-exclusive round of price drops on several dozen sci-fi games for the PlayStation 3, PS Vita, and PSP. Featured games include Platinum Games' Vanquish (now £3.95/€4.94), Ubisoft's Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon (£4.79/€5.99), and Capcom's Lost Planet 3 (£19.99/€29.99). Sci-fi themed DLC also gets the sale treatment -- Saints Row: The Third's "Gangstas in Space" add-on is £1.61/€1.97, and Space Invaders: Infinity Gene's DLC sees a price reduction across the board. PlayStation Plus members get an additional discount of up to 25 percent on all featured games. The sale will continue through November 20.

Call of Duty: Ghosts leads the charge of fresh content on the PlayStation Store this week. Infinity Ward's latest is available both in the standard edition and in the $120 Hardened bundle – which includes the base game, the Season Pass and the Free Fall map. CastleStorm, Zen Studios' 2D mash-up of tower defense and physics-based destroy-em-ups, also makes its debut today, on PS Vita and PS3. Rounding out the list of new downloads is PS2 classic The Adventures of Cookie and Cream, which is up for download at a paltry $10. On the PS Plus front, subscribers can snag a free copy of Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, Capcom's expanded re-release of its 2012 fantasy action-RPG. On top of the free game, PS Plus members can enjoy added discounts on Mortal Kombat for PS Vita, Guacamelee, Dead or Alive 5 Plus and the original Soul Calibur.

  • For the truth about Street Fighter 2, ask director Akira Nishitani

Akira Nishitani recently started a Twitter account, though instead of heavily-filtered brunch photos and duck-faced mirror portraits, the Street Fighter 2 director has been doling out little-known details on the seminal fighter's creation. For instance, did you know that the periodic red hadoukens in Street Fighter 2 were not glitches, but instead easter eggs that became wildly popular among fans? Or that each pugilist was originally supposed to feature positional damaging - kicking someone in the head would do more damage than kicking them in the leg - but that the feature was cut because the game just refused to recognize hitboxes properly? My favorite bit of trivia is the controversy over Chun Li's leggings. The development team was okay with Chun Li's borderline-equine thighs, but the tights covering them were a massive point of contention. According to Nishitani, they had to be redrawn from scratch three times before Capcom finally agreed to the outfit. More insider information on the creation of the world's most influential fighting game can be found on Akira Nishitani's Twitter account. If you don't read Japanese however, Eventhubs offers an extensive roundup.

  • Sony posts net loss in Q2, adjusts profit forecasts down

Sony counterbalanced a profitable first quarter with net loss of ¥19.3 billion in the second, converting to around $197 million. That represents a 24.5 percent year-on-year increase in Q2 net loss, despite a revenue boost attributed to currency exchange gains and increased smartphone sales. Significantly, the company adjusted its net profit forecast for the fiscal year down by 40 percent to ¥30 billion, or $305 million, due to decreased expectations for sales of "certain electronic products." As for the PlayStation division, there's no indication those decreased expectations apply to the PS4. Sony expects to ship a combined total of 15 million PS4 and PS3 units by the end of March 2014. At the Tokyo Game Show, SCE President Andrew House said his company was aiming to sell 5 million PS4 units specifically within that time frame. Regards the PS3, Sony shipped 2 million units worldwide across the three months of July to September. The PlayStation division also benefited from exchange gains, with revenue increasing 5.1 percent year-on-year to ¥155.7 billion, or $1.59 billion. Overall figures for PS3, PS2, and PSP units decreased year-on-year in Q2, although PS3 software shipments did rise. Meanwhile, the Vita price cuts announced in August contributed to an operating loss around ¥800 million, converting to $8 million.

  • Class of Heroes 2 ships to UMD buyers, Gaijinworks hints at future PSP releases

After months of delays stemming from licensing issues and last-minute bug fixes, the PSP UMD version of MonkeyPaw's Class of Heroes 2 began shipping out this week to buyers who pre-purchased the game earlier this year. Previously the subject of a failed Kickstarter campaign, Class of Heroes 2 was later released as a physical and digital combo pack via online pre-order. The Acquire-developed first-person dungeon crawler, which features a localization by Working Designs veteran Victor Ireland and his studio Gaijinworks, premiered as a downloadable PlayStation Network game in June. The UMD version of Class of Heroes 2 was delayed while Gaijinworks sorted out licensing issues relating to its opening theme song, which the studio has since replaced with an English-language track. An updated version of Class of Heroes 2, which fixes a widely reported alchemy recipe bug, among other gameplay tweaks, will hit the PlayStation Network on October 15. Gaijinworks' Ireland recently hinted at plans to "squeeze out at least 3-4 more PSP RPG titles (and offer them as physical+digital sets) before we're done with the platform," though specific titles have not been announced. The studio will gauge interest in a Class of Heroes 3 release starting in January.

Atomic Ninjas, a cross-buy multiplayer brawler for PS3 and PS Vita, also drops on PSN alongside Worms Revolution Extreme and PS2 classic Heavenly Guardian. There are also two game bundles up for grabs: A Dishonored Game of the Year bundle, which includes a smattering of DLC, and Dust 514: Tactical Edition, a version of the free-to-play shooter that tosses in some additional perks and gear. Finally, PlayStation Plus members can download a free copy of Shadow of the Colossus this week, and try to make it through another year without its proposed follow-up, The Last Guardian.

  • FIFA 14 Legacy Edition has 'no updates to gameplay or game modes'

    by
    Sinan Kubba

    09.23.2013

The updates in the 'Legacy Edition' of FIFA 14 include new kits and rosters, but not anything to do with gameplay, according to a Nintendo press release. Although Nintendo's details are noted for the 3DS version, EA is also releasing the Legacy Edition on Vita, PSP, and PS2, indicating the same lack of update on those platforms. EA previously confirmed to Pocket Gamer that FIFA 14 on Vita is a "reskin" (Pocket Gamer's words) of FIFA 13. This story is itself a reskin of a previous story; FIFA 13 on Vita was a similarly limited update to FIFA Football, as was FIFA 13 to FIFA 12 on the Wii. In short, EA has plenty of previous experience in this particular area. FIFA 14 hits North America tomorrow, and Europe on Friday, September 27. Despite the lack of gameplay additions, Nintendo is charging a full retail price of £40 (around $65) for the eShop version. If you feel that's worth it for new names and shirts, please enjoy.

  • Gravity Rush may 'fall again' in new game

Team Gravity, the Sony Japan Studio group responsible for the topsy-turvy PlayStation Vita game, Gravity Rush, are working on a new project – and it resembles a sequel so far. Sony issued the brief teaser above, which asks us to "fall again" and shows Gravity Rush heroine Kat flying around a floating city – possibly a new city altogether. Gravity Rush established itself as a top Vita game as soon as it launched in May of last year. In our review, we lauded Gravity Rush for its beautiful anime-inspired world and free-spirited flying.
