  • Samsung Q40 gets SSD, just like big brother Q30

It's anything but surprising that Samsung would follow up the Q30-SSD with a Q40 edition, but we sure are happy to finally be out of the Celeron M dark ages -- the Q30 was really showing its age. Now instead of slumming it to get some Sammy-flavored SSD, you can snap up a Q40 with 16GB or 32GB of NAND preloaded. Oddly, with all that Core Solo ULV power and Intel 945GM chipset -- ok, not exactly blazing -- we're surprised to see that Samsung is still sticking with good ol' XP instead of showing a bit of Vista sheen on this 12.1-inch unit. Perhaps the Q50 will finally have it all? The Vista-less Q40 will be hitting Hong Kong "soon" for an unannounced sticker price.[Via Core Duo News; thanks Staska]

While it hasn't been too awfully long since Samsung doused its Q40 ultraportable in pink, the company is now looking to grab the attention of HSDPA fans by shoving such support into the lappie (and toning down the color scheme, too). Partnering with SK Telecom, the Q40-HSDPA will offer T-Login connectivity throughout South Korea (unless Kim Jong Il illegally snags one just North of the divide), and will also pack a 12.1-inch WXGA display, Intel's U1400 Core Solo processor, 1GB of RAM, a smallish 60GB hard drive, and a T-DMB receiver to boot. The machine will weigh in at just 2.6 pounds, and should be hitting the streets of Seoul soon for a slightly painful 2,300,000 KRW ($2,472).

  • Samsung's ultraportable Q40 is pretty in pink

Proving once again that people seem to be willing to overpay for underpowered gadgets that could possibly be seen as "fashionable," Samsung has released a new £1,300 ($2,460) notebook whose main (read: only) selling point is its bright pink exterior. At this price point we'd expect to see words like "Core Duo" and "GeForce" on the spec sheet, but the new 12.1-inch Q40 only manages to throw down a disappointing 1.2GHz ULV Core Solo processor, just 512MB of RAM, a scant 60GB hard drive capacity, and those integrated Intel graphics which will only please gamers who are into Minesweeper and Sudoku. Still, you are getting a built-in DVD burner and Windows XP Professional as the operating system, so this lappy isn't a total lost cause. Although the shiny Q40 is available exclusively at PC World, we have a feeling that you'll soon be seeing it in the hands of celebutantes worldwide, and perhaps even being given away as a door prize on a future episode of My Super Sweet 16.[Via Shiny Shiny]
