  • X-Men Origins: Wolverine dev diary promises game 'does not suck'

The first installment in a series of developer diary videos for X-Men Origins: Wolverine dropped today, bringing with it a number of heady promises from the folks behind the sextuple-clawed slaughterfest. Included in these promises are reminders of the title's feral protagonist's badassedness (the frequent use of this adjective might make the video NSFW, if you work at like, a monastery or something), and a solemn vow that Wolverine will be "the movie game that finally does not suck." The dev team behind Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game begs to differ. If developer boasting isn't your cup of tea, the video also provides some nice gameplay footage from the title. However, this footage could leave you worried about Logan's mental health -- we're fairly sure wielding knuckle cutlery whilst traversing a rope bridge isn't the safest way to get around.

  • New Wolfenstein trailer and info exclusively from GameTrailers TV

Geoff Keighley and co. got the scoop on the newest trailer and a ton of info for the upcoming Wolfenstein game from Raven Software on last night's GameTrailers TV. The game, unsurprisingly, seeks to bring back most of what we remember from the classic id Software title, from main character B.J. Blazkowicz to the gauntlet of Third Reich baddies taking aim at B.J. along the way. This may or may not be a good thing, considering when we last saw Wolfenstein at the NY Comic Con, we were less than impressed.Additionally, the next-gen current-gen update to Wolfenstein brings with it some new weapons (a particle gun that vaporizes enemies, for instance) as well as a twist on the gameplay called "the veil," which the game's creative director, Eric Beissman, describes as, "An alternative reality that sits on top of where we live." From what we can glean from the gameplay in the video, this "veil" business seems to be Wolfenstein's version of bullet-time, as well as a means to employ various powers. To find out everything Mr. Keighley discovered, peep the interview with Beissman after the break. Oh, and yeah, no mech Hitler! Seriously?!%Gallery-27817%

Apart from being a bit on the short side, Wolverine is pretty much the ideal male hero. He's fast, strong, mean [Get a room! - Ed] ... and he has an adamantium skeleton complete with kick-ass adamantium claws. Judging by the latest trailer for X-Men Origins: Wolverine, if the game is even half as good as it looks -- which seems to be the case, incidentally -- we're in for a treat. There is no stealth here. There is only running, jumping and killing. Even better, it appears that the running and jumping are there purely to facilitate the killing. Oh, and Wolverine deflects a rocket with his claws. With. His. Claws. That is all.

click to enlarge In Raven Software's latest FPS, Singularity, you play as a salesperson for Cingular Wireless, now AT&T Wireless. No, that's not right. Oh yes. You play as a character who, unlike a Cingular salesperson, can manipulate time -- travel through it, use it to make folks age to death ... y'know, the usual. Anyway, the game's publisher, Activision, has released the first trailer for it and a couple dozen screenshots. The game looks mighty good, but we won't be totally convinced until we confirm players can use time to grow beards quickly. That and play it at E3. click to mutant-size Imagine this: Wolverine, body riddled with bullets, climbs atop a helicopter. He bursts through the window, grabs the pilot and lifts the body up to the rotors. The pilot's head gets shredded apart. Welcome to X-Men Origins: Wolverine. One could talk about the various nuances of its gameplay, but overwhelmingly only one aspect of the game truly stands out: it's violent. Really, really violent. It shouldn't be surprising that X-Men Origins is so bloody. It is, in fact, about a man who has deadly claws coming out of his hands. For too long, the big-budget Hollywood movies and video games have presented a neutered Wolverine. X-Men Origins: Wolverine wants to tell the story of a man who's very, very angry at those that created him -- a weapon of war. %Gallery-44056%

"How come I can't ever just grab a guy and rip him in half?" When X-Men Origins: Wolverine Project Lead, Dan Vondrak, asked why Wolverine had been gimped in every other game he starred in, we got the sneaking suspicion that someone finally "got it." Wolverine is a badass, and this debut CG trailer slowly makes us believe that maybe, just maybe, he will finally get the game we all know he deserves. Check out the trailer after the break.

Judging by the big hand on the office clock it's time for new details concerning Activision Blizzard's upcoming 'targeted' new IP, Singularity. Right on cue, the game is the cover darling for Game Informer's February issue, with the 'zine's online site teasing new details on the sci-fi shooter with a time-sensitive twist.First shown in brief during Activision's not-quite E3 press event last July, Singularity is being developed by Wolverine dev Raven Software. According to GI, the game will let players jump through history and use time as a weapon, rapidly aging opponents into bones and dust. We wonder if it works the other way around, letting us turn the opposition into sniveling babies or angst-fueled tweens. The issue, complete with the snazzy cover above, should be fluxing its way onto magazine racks soon.

People.com writes: "At 6 ft. 2 in., all scruff and biceps, Hugh Jackman looms large in the epic Australia, which he says kept him 'dirty 95 percent of the time' and left people stammering, 'Oh ... my ... God,' according to costar Nicole Kidman, who adds, 'Women's jaws drop when Hugh walks into a room.' "Jackman's wife of 12 years, Deborra-Lee Furness, calls his perfect form 'the Body of Doom -- but I like what's inside': a romantic who sings ballads at home and makes pancakes for Oscar, 8, and Ava, 3. A hard body with a soft center." 2008's Sexiest Man Alive will next star in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, coming May 2009. Oh! And yeah, Activision is publishing the coinciding game. Wait! We knew that ... hmmm ... what's new here? Ah yes! Here we are: "From the award-winning studio Raven Software, the video game enlists players to experience the tormented origins of Wolverine, from his escape of the Weapon X facility to the jungles of Africa and beyond ... the future X-Man enacts lightning-quick combat, evasive maneuvers, in-depth combo attacks, and an array of brutal finishing moves. Wolverine doesn't just deliver massive damage, either -- he also takes it." Hot damn! What we wouldn't give to ...

More and more movies based on comics are being made and, as a result, more and more videogames based on movies based on comics are beomg announced. X-Men Origins: Wolverine is the latest such title and will be released alongside the film of the same name in Spring 2009. Raven Software (Quake 4, X-Men Legends) will develop the game in which you learn the origins of Wolverine's character (hence the name). With this and Watchmen releasing around the same time, it looks like we'll have a superhero filled Spring. Hopefully Raven can make a worthwhile game, despite the fact that it's obviously a movie license and will no doubt suffer from rushed development. Still, you never know. We'll find out next Spring.

Today, Activision pulled back the developer curtain on their latest X-men title, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, informing us what it'll be about, showing off a snazzy screenshot and announcing its May 2009 release. The Raven Studios developed Origins will slice up retail shelves to coincide with the release of the feature length movie of the same name (yup, it's a movie based game) where gamers will get to experience the "tormented origins of Wolverine, from his escape of the Weapon X facility to the jungles of Africa and beyond." We also can deduce from the lone screenshot that our in-game Wolverine will mirror the suave looks of Mr. Hugh Jackman and his hair gel rich 'do. [Via press release]

Well, technically, they're of the new Wolfenstein ... not the original, although they share the same title (minus a "3D"). But we figured you'd guessed that after taking a gander at it above. Oh, and to clear up any confusion, Activision has confirmed that the game will hit PCs as well as PS3 and Xbox 360. The only thing we need now is a date. Considering id Software isn't supposed to be at E3 this year (since they left the ESA) the company is making quite a splash. First, id announced plans to partner with Electronic Arts for its upcoming title Rage and now they're busy dropping new details for an upcoming Wolfenstein title. Publisher Activision (another E3 no show) released a handful of screenshots for the latest entry of the famed first-person shooter and showcased the game with a gameplay trailer during their press conference. Co-developed by Raven Software, Wolfenstein will once again feature hero B. J. Blazkowicz against Nazi and supernatural enemies. As the Nazis attempt to open a dark dimension known as "The Shroud," B. J. is called into action to halt their evil plans. The new Wolfenstein game will once again feature team based objective multiplayer, also seen in Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Tides of War. More information is expected at id's annual QuakeCon which takes place later this month.%Gallery-27817%

We've known about it for a while years, but it was nonetheless nice to see the next Wolfenstein formally announced for PS3 and Xbox 360 tonight. Activision, id, and Raven Software have finally shown a trailer showcasing the fruits of their collective labor – one that's over rat-a-tat-tat fast.It was revealed that the game's most intriguing hook will be the ability to enlist the aid of underground resistance in combating a nigh-endless flood of nazis. Nazis who are attempting to rip open a hole between our dimension and one called "Shrell," which we assume is Raven's way around officially licensing "Hell."id's Todd Hollenshead, who was on hand to introduce the quick clip, announced that more footage (and, we hope, details) will be dished out at QuakeCon on July 31.

Wolfenstein fans rejoice because it looks like the next entry in the fabled franchise is set to debut at E3 this year. The news comes from a press release covering Spike TV's E3 plans (of all places). So says the press release: "Geoff Keighley is on the E3 show floor to give Spike viewers the inside scoop on the sights and sounds of the show. Also, tune in for more world exclusive surprises including something special from id Software and Raven Software." The time listed for this particular bit of programming is "Tuesday, July 15 and Wednesday, July 16 (11:59 PM - Midnight, ET/PT)."Considering the next Wolfenstein is Raven Software's current project, it sounds like that's what we'll be seeing. Strangely, this is listed for GameTrailers TV's E3 Minute program which, as noted above, is only a minute long. With id Software's E3 plans still very hazy, it's looks like things may be starting to take shape after all. Let's hope we wind up with more than a minute's worth of Wolfenstein when all is said and done.

Rumors of a new Soldier of Fortune game have been confirmed by Activision. Speaking to GameSpot, the publisher said that the shooter is "being developed in Minnesota" and would be released on their Activision Value label. You know who's not in Minnesota? Madison, Wisconsin-based Raven Software, who developed the previous two Soldier of Fortune titles. Former Raven employee Kenn Hoekstra posted on Blue's News forums that that there was a new developer. The only clue we have comes from an anonymous source via Firing Squad, who states that it will be developed by Cauldron, who previously created History Channel: Civil War FPS for Activision Value in 2006.No other details are available, though all signs (especially that glowing, neon sign that says Activision Value) point to a disappointing, budget-priced revisit to a quality franchise.

Wolfenstein fans can again rejoice, because the franchise hasn't died just yet. Actually, you'll be happy to know that the next game in the series will be hitting the 360 later next year. In an interview with a Wisconsin new station, who were doing a story on video game development, Raven Software talked about what new tools they use for next gen development and hinted that Wolfenstein will be releasing sometime in 2008. Huge news? Not really, but the Wolfenstein dev team has kept quite mum about their little baby, so any news is rather exciting. Full article and Raven Software interview after the jump.[Via Joystiq]
