This whole global economic crisis, and its resulting massive loss of jobs got us thinking. We here at Engadget didn't want to stand helplessly by, announcing every new round of misery without giving anything back -- so we decided to take the opportunity to spread a little positivity. We'll be handing out a new gadget every day (except for weekends) to lucky readers until we run out of stuff / companies stop sending things. Today we've got a Razer Arctosa black gaming keyboard on hand. Read the rules below (no skimming -- we're omniscient and can tell when you've skimmed) and get commenting! Hooray for free stuff!Special thanks to Razer for providing the gear! The rules: Leave a comment below. Any comment will do, but if you want to share your proposal for "fixing" the world economy, that'd be sweet too. You may only enter this specific giveaway once. If you enter this giveaway more than once you'll be automatically disqualified, etc. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.) If you enter more than once, only activate one comment. This is pretty self explanatory. Just be careful and you'll be fine. Contest is open to anyone in the 50 States, 18 or older! Sorry, we don't make this rule (we hate excluding anyone), so be mad at our lawyers and contest laws if you have to be mad. Winner will be chosen randomly. The winner will receive one Razer Arctosa gaming keyboard. Approximate retail value is $49.99. If you are chosen, you will be notified by email. Winners must respond within three days of the end of the contest. If you do not respond within that period, another winner will be chosen. We already told you how much we appreciated the aesthetics of Razer's latest gaming mouse (that'd be the Mamba, officially), but we spent the weekend embroiled in deathmatches and everyday blogging tasks in order to give you a bit more insight on whether this beautiful input peripheral really deserves to be acquired in exchange for $129.99. Follow us after the break if you're suddenly intrigued.

Late last month, we had the opportunity to have a listen with Razer's Carcharias headset, and now we're seeing just how precise the same outfit's latest mouse is when it comes to clicking oh-so-carefully within Minesweeper. The downright gorgeous Razer Mamba just showed up on our doorstep, and we couldn't resist photographing the unboxing experience and hosting it up for all to enjoy. Our Mamba came housed in a special Razer suitcase that also included the aforementioned Carcharias headset. The mouse packaging alone was some of the most extravagant we've seen, with even the delightfully braided USB cable (yes, it's wired or wireless) encased in a soft black cover. Bottom line? The aesthetics here are top-notch all the way around, and while we plan on giving this thing a run-through over the weekend in order to speak on actual performance, we'd suggest diving in below to whet your appetite.

  • Razer Carcharias headset: unboxing and impressions

Razer's Carcharias headset is yet another audio-related diversion for the input peripheral company, and as with its mighty impressive Mako 2.1 sound system, this here headset was remarkably solid. Originally announced at CES this year, this gaming headset is a multi-functional tool that works first and foremost as a two-way communication device for gamers who love to yap while fragging. Secondly, it can double as a really, really decent set of cans. The flip-down microphone can easily fold up and out of the way, and considering just how light these are, they can be worn for hours on end (trust us, we tried) without any sort of ear pain and unusual pressure on your dome. The lengthy braided cable was slick, the in-line remote was a thoughtful touch and the headband was amongst the most comfortable we've had the pleasure of coming into contact with at this price point. When speaking with Razer CEO Robert Krakoff, he confessed that these were specifically designed to be worn comfortably for upwards of 10 hours, and we believe it. He also noted that customers were clamoring for deeper bass response in its headphone products, and yet again, it delivered in bringing the low-end to these cans. Not once did we feel the bass was magnified out of proportion, and while it's obviously designed to let gamers feel the "booms," we thoroughly enjoyed how it handled good ole rock 'n roll. All in all, we're comfortable recommending these to PC gamers who could also use a new pair of headphones for music alone. At $79.99, these are solid enough to last you for quite some time, and the superior comfort level here is really what sets it apart. Razer may not be the first name that comes to mind when you think audio, but these are definitely worth a listen. %Gallery-45766%

It's been a few months now since we've heard anything from Razer, but the outfit's hitting us up with two new pieces here at CES that are definitely worth a look. Starting things off is yet another gaming mouse, this one coined the Mamba. It features 2.4GHz "gaming grade" wireless technology, an optional, detachable cord, first-in-class polling rates of 1-millisecond, a "world's fastest" 5,600DPI Precision 3.5G Laser sensor and a battery life / DPI stage indicator. Moving on, we've got the Carcharias circumaural audio headset, which rocks a fully adjustable headband, inline remote and a 3-meter braided cable. The devices are set to start shipping in February and January, respectively, at $129.99 / $79.99. The release is hosted up in full after the break.%Gallery-40813%

    11.14.2008

The Countdown to Wrath Giveaways are all wrapped up, but we've got one more awesome Razer product for one lucky winner. The Razer Destructor gaming surface isn't just a mouse pad -- it's a nature reserve for your gaming mouse. This thing was designed with tournament teams in mind, and it's such a crazy piece of mouse-supporting machinery that it comes with its own case. Even non-gaming mice play better on this thing, and if you've got a gaming mouse, your tracking could be up to 37% faster just by putting the mouse on this baby. This isn't the Cadillac of mousepads -- it's the just-paved, scrubbed, and re-painted highway underneath that brand new Cadillac. To enter, leave a comment on this post before Monday, November 17th, 2008 at 6pm ET. One winner will be chosen randomly and will receive a Destructor professional gaming mat (valued at $40). You must be at least 18 to enter and a legal resident of the United States or non-Quebec resident of Canada. You can only enter once. Click here for complete Official Rules. This is one of your last chances to pick something up during our Wrath contests if you haven't yet -- make sure to get your comment below to get in on the random drawing.

    11.13.2008

The Countdown to Wrath Giveaways continue, and we're putting another Razer product in the mail for one lucky winner. In Greek mythology, Lachesis was the woman who determined just how much time everyone had left to live, and with the Lachesis gaming mouse, you'll be able to do exactly the same -- with a 4000 dpi laser and 32kb onboard memory (that's right, this mouse has its own memory built in), you'll be the one deciding just who lives and dies in the Arenas, raids or BGs. To enter, leave a comment on this post before Sunday, November 16th, 2008 at 6pm ET. One winner will be chosen randomly and will receive a Lachesis gaming mouse (valued at $80). You must be at least 18 to enter and a legal resident of the United States or non-Quebec resident of Canada. You can only enter once. Click here for complete Official Rules. When we told our own Zach Yonzon that we were giving away this mouse, he pretty much fainted from the excitement. But he's not even eligible to win it -- you are, so leave a comment below, and good luck.

  • Razer rolls out Lycosa Mirror, Arctosa gaming keyboards

    by
    Donald Melanson
    Donald Melanson
    10.07.2008

It's been almost exactly a year since Razer introduced its Lycosa gaming keyboard and it looks like the company's decided to celebrate by rolling out a new, slightly updated model. From the looks of it, the Lycosa Mirror (pictured above) is identical in most respects to its predecessor, with the exception of a new high-gloss mirror finish on the keys (as opposed to rubber), and some "enhanced backlighting." Those looking to head in the opposite direction can also now opt for Razer's new Arctosa keyboard (check it after the break), which does away with the backlighting and non-slip rubber finish altogether but hangs on to the usual programmable macro and media keys. You can look for it to be available in both silver on black and black on black versions for $50 next month, while the Lycosa Mirror will set you back $80 when it lands in December.

We know how long you play these things. MMOs aren't sprints, they're marathons. When you sit down to play one of these things ... sure, you could just be doing a quick quest or a 15-minute scenario, but more likely you're going to try to get in a couple of hours of gaming. That means you want to be comfortable, right? You want to have an easy a time as possible physically moving around your desktop. Well, we've got just the thing to help you out. Massively and the PC peripherals juggernaut Razer are banding together to do a series of giveaways, and first up is a nice simple one that (we hope) will make you more comfortable moment-to-moment.We've got two Destructor Mousing Surfaces here (each worth $39.99), high end pads that make the simple act of sliding around your mouse all the more comfortable. Couldn't be easier to enter this little contest. All you have to do is leave a comment on this post telling us how long you usually play in your standard MMO play session. You'll need to comment before 7:00 AM EST Thursday, October 9th. You can only enter once per person, and when the contest closes we'll ship out these fantastic prizes to two randomly-selected winners. To win you must be age 18 or up and a resident of the US or Canada (excluding Quebec). For full eligibility details, we suggest you read our official rules. Good luck!

That "Speed of (the) Light" mouse Razer hyped? It's just the Salmosa, their new lower-end 1800 DPI, 1KHz polling gamer mouse with sensitivity adjustment and a slightly more reasonable $40 price tag. It'll be out in Q3, but something tells us by then you'll have found some other completely obvious way of spending two Jacksons.

With CeBIT opening its doors in Germany in just a matter of days, it seems that Razer is already getting us antsy by rolling out a new teaser for an upcoming mouse. Granted, it's not like the firm hasn't pulled something similar before, but considering that it specifically notes March 4th as the date to check back for more details, it's not exactly being secretive about where the launch will take place. T-minus six days until the Speed of (The) Light is revealed -- we're tense with anticipation.[Thanks, Defiler]

    02.13.2008

For a fair majority of you out there, this could easily be the first time you've ever heard of Razer's own 2.1-channel enthusiast speaker system. But if you've been in the market for a swank new setup to pair with your computer or gaming rig, here's to hoping it won't be the last. To bring you up to speed, this uniquely designed, THX-certified set was originally trumpeted at CES 2007, but curiously, it soon fell off the map just as quickly as it had arrived. Fast-forward a dozen months, and sure enough, it made yet another entry at the very same trade show -- this time at THX's own booth. Needless to say, these three speakers have taken their sweet time in coming to market, but were they worth the wait? Click on to find out.

  • Razer releases Destructor gaming-grade surface

By tipster popular demand, we present the Razer Destructor gaming-grade surface (named after the Gigantiops Destructor genus of ants, for the myrmecologists among you). Granted that we can't conscionably recommend shelling out $39.99 for a mousepad unless it actually performs headshots for you, but if you've got a showdown with Fatal1ty in your future it could be up your alley. Optical gaming mice reportedly track 25% better on this thing, with gaming-grade laser mice getting a 37% tracking improvement through proximity to this surface. Co-developed with pro-gaming teams, the Destructor will be available for mission-critical fragging sometime this month.
