  • Famitsu gives Resident Evil 4 Wii a 9.5 out of 10

Despite being essentially a thrice-released game (previously on GameCube and PlayStation 2), respected Japanese gaming publication Famitsu gave the Wii iteration of Resident Evil 4 a 9.5 out of 10. The score is an average of four editors' score: two gave the title a 9, while two gave the game a perfect score of 10.What's key to this review that Nintendo should be thanking Capcom for is how the editors laud the control system as easy to get into and making the game feel fresh and new. According to IGN, one reviewer noted that "game offers the feeling of being closer to the action as well as upping the tension," while another remarked that those who have played the game before will find something to enjoy.Such words echo back to Nintendo's mantra of offering gamers something new and exciting, and this game seems to showcase that much like the GameCube version showcased a more mature, visually appealing side to that console. Now how about we see Capcom incorporate the control scheme for a future Wii title?Resident Evil 4 for Wii is coming out May 31 in Japan. and June 19 in North America with a price well below standard Wii releases.

We know some of you out there are excited about Capcom's on-rails Resident Evil, Umbrella Chronicles, so we ask you: How excited are you? Are you excited enough about the Wii as light-gun functionality that you'd be willing to dish out ¥3675 (about $30)? Are you excited enough about returning to the original Raccoon City mansion that you'd want to decorate your mom's basement with a game case disguised as a medical waste containment carrier? We'll admit, we're not quite as excited as you lot, but we would like to decorate our mom's basement with more video game-themed tchotchkes.

This is simply the coolest limited-edition box in recent memory. Forget the European Resident Evil 4 box. This Japanese Biohazard box is the business. For 3,675 yen, which is a suspiciously low $30, you get an awesome 20-DVD-capacity Umbrella Corporation biohazard storage box (itself inside an Umbrella Corporation shipping box), two keys, warning tags, and caution tape to seal it up. With a case this cool, who even needs a game? You could always buy this and RE4 Wii Edition and build your own limited edition set.[Via The Tanooki]

Were it our decision, the streets would be choked with the undead, suffocated by their sloth and numbers. What little remained of the human race would have to go into hiding, their once-magnificent kingdoms now ruled by zombie majesty. It's a terrible vision that we hold onto in our heads every night before drifting off to sleep, hoping to carry it along with us in our dreams. Given our affection for the undead here at the Fanboy offices, we couldn't pass up mentioning this month's cover of Official Nintendo Magazine. The issue advertises May's Resident Evil features with a corpse hand breaking through its earthen grave. Gripped by cold, gray fingers, a Wii remote kicks back into life, properly strapped to the undeceased's wrist. Head past the post break for a better look, but take care not to attract the attention of brain-eating revenants on your way inside.

Capcom's U.S. website has updated it's Resident Evil 4 section with what we're assuming is the final boxart for the game. Also, the site lists some deets for the title, but we all pretty much knew what we would be getting with the Wii port, no? And, while we think it's some pretty neat boxart, we've seen better already. What do you all think?See also: Resident Evil sites lunge right for our jugular[Thanks, hvnlysoldr!]

GoNintendo has posted some YouTube videos that show off test versions off two canceled titles: Resident Evil for the Game Boy Color, and Resident Evil 2 for the Game Boy Advance. For a little comparison shopping, here's the full intro to the Nintendo DS version. While the GBC version is pretty much what you'd expect, the GBA version looks pretty darn good. Sadly, development was later canceled on both of these. It makes you wonder what else is out there that almost made it. We're usually only able to see the final versions of games, and some of them shouldn't have made it that far.

Not so much a discussion topic today as it is a directed viewing. This is the boxart for the European release of Resident Evil 4. It's basically the PAL PS2 boxart, but white instead of red. We are now totally okay with the tacked-on waggle controls, and the fact that it's a Wii port of a game that is two years old and can already be played on Wii, because it's got really nice boxart. We're not even being sarcastic. Too bad about the "Wii Edition" thing, but we'll look past that. So what's your opinion? Awesome boxart, or totally awesome boxart?

We were poring over the new Silent Hill 5 "details" today (more like vague statements from Akira Yamaoka about how awesome it's going to be) and all we really know about it is that it's going to be more like Silent Hill 2 (yay) and it's coming to some consoles that aren't the DS (boo). Our first reaction is to be outraged. We love our system and we love Silent Hill and its atmospheric, psychological horror storytelling. But would we actually love them together? The larger question here extends beyond the boundaries of one foggy town: is the DS an appropriate format for survival horror? We had one outing already in Resident Evil: Deadly Silence, which a very trustworthy source tells us wasn't an entirely successful experiment. Alternately, if the major discussion topic doesn't interest you, we can just talk about Silent Hill and how great it is.

Masachika Kawata, Capcom producer, recently sat down with GameSpot to talk about the upcoming Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles. During the interview, he confirms the game will feature scenarios from Resident Evil 0, Resident Evil 1 and, our personal favorite, Resident Evil 2. While we're bummed that Resident Evil 3 is left out of the party, we can understand why Capcom chose to do so (we're sure that Nemesis would really mess the game formula up). Sadly, we don't get a sneak peek at any of the segments taken from Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil 2 in this video.[Note: Clicking the "Read" link, or on the graphic above, will open the video in a separate window.]Update: Small typo has been corrected. Reader Tiger, who we all know loves working with GlovePIE (as evidenced by his work with Rez, Panzer Dragoon and House of the Dead 3), has made another script, implementing Wiimote controls into the PC port of Biohazard 4 (Resident Evil 4). Tiger's even gone ahead and matched the button mapping we reported on a few days ago, making his controls almost perfect to that of the Wii version due out (except for one flaw due to the limitations of the PC port of the game). Tiger has the script available for download via his site and also assures us he is working on adding sensor bar support.Check past the post break for the videos of this in action.

  • Umbrella Chronicles won't be another Gun Survivor

If you've played Dead Aim or any of Resident Evil's other Gun Survivor spinoffs, it's understandable why you might be hesitant to give Capcom's newest rail-shooter a chance. Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles shares the same first-person perspective and light gun mechanics as the GunCon games, so it's easy to associate the title with the mediocre Gun Survivor series. NeoGAF forumer cvxfreak posted a well-supported list of reasons for why you shouldn't confuse the new Wii game with its PS2 cousins, claiming their similarities as superficial. Unlike with most of the Gun Survivor titles, Umbrella Chronicles' development hasn't been handed down to a lesser studio. Capcom's own Kawada Masachika is heading production, working to extend the game's length -- approximately 15 hours -- beyond the short playtimes that plagued Gun Survivor releases. Umbrella Chronicles also promises a lot more gameplay depth with destructible environments, improved weapon selection, and quick time events. Previews for Umbrella Chronicles haven't been favorable, but it's still too early in development for us to judge. Knowing that Capcom won't be following the same formula as the Gun Survivor series, however, gives us hope for the final product.

So we're all excited about Resident Evil 4 redux, because it's such an awesome game, but what about Umbrella Chronicles? Some people don't seem to be too thrilled about the fact that it's an on-rails shooter. We're all about shooting zombies around here, so we're okay with the idea, though we'd like to get our hands on it before we deliver a final verdict. At this juncture, it's best to say we're tentatively excited, pending more details, video, and images. How about you?

Joystiq got their hands on two of Capcom's biggest upcoming titles at the Capcom Gamer's Day and their impressions are generally a mixed bag. They find faults in both titles, but really only praise Treasure Island Z. Personally, we're probably more invested in the upcoming Umbrella Chronicles, what with us being Resident Evil nuts and all, but after reading more about Project Island Z, we're finding the game's incredible amount of gesture-based controls to be intriguing. When we originally saw Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, it wasn't hard to figure out that it was an on-rails shooter, even without having to touch it. Now that we've finally gotten the Wii remote and the nunchuk in our hands, we can confirm, once again, that it is an on-rails shooter. A particularly boring one at that.Umbrella Chronicles earned it's new moniker, House of the Resident Evil, by feeling like just that. Our demo of the title had us going through the mansion from the original Resident Evil, only at turbo speed. The Wii remote was used to aim a cursor on the screen, while the nunchuk was largely useless, used only to look around. Inexplicably, reloading is done by waggling the remote, thus becoming a nuisance during hectic scenes. You know, because it's not like the nunchuk doesn't have motion sensors or anything.%Gallery-2570%

The official Japanese site for Umbrella Chronicles has a new trailer up (click on the middle button, then the "PV Vol 2" button) that shows off some more gameplay of the on-rails shooter, however gameplay segments shown are only limited to the mansion from the first game. Personally, we'd like to see how our favorite Resident Evil game, Resident Evil 2, is going to be represented. Still, we'll take what we can get and will try to sit as quietly and patiently as possible.See also: Resident Evil sites lunge right for our jugular[Via Exophase; Thanks, zshadow!]

Describing Capcom's latest trailer for its Resident Evil 4 Wii port as corny would be an understatement. It would be more appropriate to liken the video to Iowa, the biggest corn producer in the United States. You could even describe the advertisement as Centeot himself, the Mayan god of corn. The corniness of this RE4 promotional clip runs so deep, it should come on a cob. Playing the game with the Wii remote and nunchuck looks great, but we really can't get over the bad acting. We're not sure if this is the worst video we've seen all week, or the most wonderful! Jump past the post break to see the trailer in all its glory. [Via NeoGAF]

For those of you who're hyped to play through Resident Evil 4 for a third time, you might have been wondering exactly how the game controls will work. Thankfully, IGN has put up a diagram (which you can see above) explaining the exact controls. After looking them over for ourselves, we have one question: will we be able to move and aim at the same time? The little description for the "Remote Pointer" above seems to imply as much.

Some games, like the ubiquitous Wii Sports, use the Wiimote's space-age technology to closely map real motion into gameplay. This is generally regarded as "neat" and accepted by the masses, who run off to show their grandparents.Other games, like the upcoming port of Resident Evil 4, make no such attempt to represent physical motion as virtual motion (outside of the new knife controls). In fact, some of the motion controls seem to be simulating button presses. Case in point, reloading requires you to hold B and shake the Wiimote. That's hardly more representative of the action of reloading a gun than pushing a button, or even going into a menu.We sort of revealed how we felt there, but this isn't about us. It's about you. How does non-representative motion control affect you? Is it still fun to waggle, even when you're waggling abstractly?

[Update 1: fixed the name of the DS game. Thanks, SnesR0X, and no thanks to the many similar DS-game subtitles!]It's been a while since we had a directed blurry-Famitsu-picture staredown, and this one is, as usual, totally worth staring at. Famitsu printed a long-awaited look at Capcom's Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles, the Wii-exclusive RE-series-spanning game.According to the article, it's a first-person gun shooting game with playable characters from past REs including Chris, Jill, Wesker, and others. Whether it's a true FPS or an on-rails affair like Resident Evil: Dead Aim remains to be seen. Also in Famitsu was confirmation that Resident Evil 4 is getting an enhanced Wii release. Rumor has it that all the PS2 extras will be included, but the only definite is an added Wiimote-controlled knife mode. Sounds like RE Deadly Silence on the DS.[Thanks, zshadow!]
