Apple's new USB security feature has a major loophole
Apple's new USB Restricted Mode, which dropped with the iOS 11.4.1 release yesterday, may not be as secure as previously thought. The feature is designed to protect iPhones against USB devices used by law enforcement to crack your passcode, and works by disabling USB access after the phone has been locked for an hour. Computer security company ElcomSoft, however, has found a loophole.
YouTube says LGBTQ+ video censorship won't happen again
YouTube has updated its policies to explicitly state that any LGBTQ+-themed video with no graphic/mature language and content is allowed in Restricted Mode. The platform launched Restricted Mode for use by kids and in places of learning, but it didn't quite work as intended. It unfortunately ended up filtering out millions of harmless videos, many of them perfectly wholesome ones with LGBTQ+ themes. They include videos of a lesbian couple's wedding vows, of someone emotionally coming out to his grandmother and of people speaking out against discrimination.
YouTube fixes Restricted Mode issue censoring LGBTQ+ videos
YouTube says it has fixed the issue that made Restricted Mode a bit too restrictive. The option was supposed to make the website more suitable for minors when switched on, but its older version also filtered out millions of harmless videos, including hundreds of thousands featuring LGBTQ+ themes. It affected Canadian indie pop duo Tegan & Sara's music videos, a recording of someone coming out to his grandmother and a lesbian couple's wedding vows, among numerous other perfectly wholesome content. People rightly called out YouTube, which apologized for what it said was a mistake its system made.
