  • The slow, unsettling burn of Owl Cave's indie horror

Owl Cave popped onto the indie scene in 2013 with a macabre, witty point-and-click adventure called Richard & Alice, which received a slew of rave reviews. Studio co-founder Nina White specializes in crafting vaguely horrific stories packed with tension, and her latest creation, The Charnel House Trilogy, is no exception. It's a subdued brand of horror: no jump scares, no boogeymen under the bed, no demonic children with long, limp hair crawling out of the TV. Charnel House takes place on a train and tells the stories of three passengers over the course of a single night. "For me, horror's all about the creeping dread, the slow, unsettling burn," White says. "It's this sense of unease and discomfort that I really like playing around with when crafting horror stories."

  • Latest Greenlight inductees include Energy Hook, Richard and Alice, Detective Grimoire

Steam Greenlight is increasingly resembling the opening sequences of classic Japanese game show Takeshi's Castle, known to US fans through Spike TV's MXC. Again, two weeks after the last batch, another teeming mass of 50 games charges madly towards the gates of Steam. If only the process was as hilarious as Takeshi's Castle; Greenlight would be vastly improved by dressing up game developers as skittles and chucking huge bowling balls at them. No offense, developers, it just would. Highlights from the batch include rooftop-swinging action game Energy Hook, which is also coming to PS4 and Vita, and Richard and Alice, the dark point-and-clicker co-penned by Starbound lead wordsmith Ashton Raze. Crowdfunded point-and-click mystery Detective Grimoire got through too, and like Richard and Alice the game is already available outside of Steam. Another game just out the door and now past Greenlight is Gigantic Army, an homage to 16-bit mech shooters that comes from the studio behind Satazius. The full list of the freshest fifty can be found on the Steam Greenlight site. [Image: Jamie Fristrom]

Indie Royale's latest pay-the-minimum priced bundle is available now until January 15. Currently sitting at $3.79 and slowly rising in price, the Choices 2013 bundle features eight games in total, including Arcen Games' side-scrolling action/adventure game A Valley Without Wind and its sequel. The bundle also includes the first two episodes of Cognition, Phoenix Online Studios' point-and-click adventure series. The other four games in the Choices 2013 bundle are as follows: Dungeon Hearts by Technobabel, Pid by Might and Delight, Owl Cave's Richard and Alice and Waveform by Eden Industries. Every game is available on both PC and Mac via Steam and Desura save for Richard and Alice, which is limited to Windows users through Desura, though the game is currently vying for Steam distribution if it earns community approval on Greenlight. Those that pay at least $6 for the bundle will also receive the "Slipstream Vol. 1" chiptune album by Cold Storage.

The latest Indie Royale bundle is now available for the current minimum price of $5.68. The Hammerhead bundle includes Owl Cave's Richard & Alice, Primordia by Wormwood Studios, Pressure by Chasing Carrots, Forge by Dark Vale Games and Pandora Studios' Gas Guzzlers: Combat Carnage. The bundle seems immediately worthwhile to us just for the inclusion of Richard & Alice alone, per our recent review of the game. Those that pay at least $8 for the Hammerhead bundle will also receive MY OK BBS' chiptune album It's Not Great. There's also a mysterious sixth game in the bundle, likely to be revealed at a later time. The Indie Royale bundle is available on PC until June 7.

  • Richard & Alice review: Happy when skies are gray

I love games that are deeper, shockingly different than they first appear. Richard & Alice, for example, is a sprite-like, indie point-and-click adventure, a style generally reserved for quirky romps and fantastical stories – but Richard & Alice weaves a dark tale of death, loneliness, hopelessness and shattered relationships. And climate change. Yeah, that's different.%Gallery-189894%
