  • Rig of the Day: So that's what you do with old Apple boxes

I'll be picking the Rig of the Day whilst Dave is vacationing, and my first pick is 'Web surfin' makes me thirsty!' by flickr user dotephotos. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the Blueberry iMac, since it was my first Mac. The thing that makes the picture, for me, is the use of the Apple Cinema Display box as a table. It really showcases how frickin' big those displays are.If you'd like to see your own rig featured here, simply upload photos into our group Flickr pool. Flickr user digitaldust saw this mailbox one day and snapped a quick shot (no, it's not his). Though we don't agree with the photo's title, we still think it's pretty cool. We can hear the conversations that this thing spawns now:"Honey, will you check the mail on the Mac?""Which one...livingroom or front yard?""The only good use for a Mac" posted by digitaldust. This is fantastic. Flickr user Zennifer has mounted her G5 iMac on a swiveling arm, allowing it to "float" above her desk. Today's rig is more of an "anti-rig." When Apple released the iMac G5, they used the tagline, "Where did the computer go?" Flickr user *nathan takes the idea to a whole new level with this "faceless" iMac. Some guys (or girls) have all the luck. While it's true that I own many Macs, the vast majority of them (ok, all but two) weren't manufactured in this decade...and most of those don't really work. So you can understand why I'm jealous envious of prunejuice's (great name) snapshot featuring a Powerbook G4, 2GHz BlackBook, 23" Cinema Display, G4 Mac mini, DP G5 Powermac and bevy if iPods. Sheesh."prunejuice" posted by (who else) prunejuice. If you'd like to see your own rig featured here, simply upload photos into our group Flickr pool. We'll select an image every day to highlight.

"...If I could save time in a bottle..." Today's shot features a 15" MacBook Pro next to its older brother, a 15" Powerbook G4. They're really quite similar at first glance. Yes, that Thomas Dolby. Flickr user randomduck snapped a shot of his on-stage rig which consisted of contemporary and (modded) vintage equipment, all of which is controlled by a dual-processor Power Mac G5. Now here's a setup that Mr. Ive himself would envy. The desk looks like a machined airplane wing, and the Macbook Pro (we assume) is connected to the wall-mounted Apple display (here's another shot). A wireless keyboard and mouse keep the whole thing clean, clean, clean. We love it. "apple wing!" posted by jensen interceptor. Today's Rig shot features three vintage PowerBooks: A PowerBook Duo 2300c, a PowerBook G3 (bronze keyboard) and a PowerBook 3400c, all up and running. I've got a 3400c myself that I intend to turn into a picture frame some day (because I have so much free time). I was once given a Powerbook 150 for helping a friend paint a fence, which I used at my desk for Excel and Word back when I was a teacher. "Powerbooks" posted by End User. Ah, the pizza box Macs: Flat, broad squares of loveliness.
