We're bad enough at the guitar in its daunting, 6-string, fleshly version that we fear a virtual phone-based edition might truly do us in, but Motorola seems to be cooking up just such a device, at least according to some patents that have recently surfaced. We can't quite figure out how it works, seems that the keys are used for strumming, and a sort of control knob selects the chords. Luckily you can switch up your tone to a violin or banjo in hopes of confusing your pals into thinking you're rocking out. It'll be our little secret.[Via textually.org]

All the cool kids are getting into the mobile content biz, and CBS is about to announce a few of their strategies, including short form videos for a small subscription cost. Currently on the table are 99 cents a month CBS News to Go and $3.99 Entertainment Tonight, with a mini soap opera soon to follow. Everything will be delivered in small digestible bits, with customisation options to select what type of news you'd like to receive and how often. CBS also has plans to offer the usual ringtones and wallpaper, along with a $6 a month service to interject sound effects like applause into your mobile conversation -- we can only hope and pray they're dead wrong about the market on this last one.[Via MocoNews]

Think your band's got what it takes to impress a guy with 50 million friends? Well if you've the musical chops to win over Tom Anderson and his MySpace army (and the suits at Verizon- they have the final say on the winner), you could be the lucky beneficiary of more Verizon publicity than the "Can you hear me now?" dude. The big V is teaming up with the 'Space to hold the "Calling All Bands" contest, where some unsigned band will have a song produced and distributed through the V CAST download service. And since this is a mobile carrier we're talking about, the song will be made available as a ring tone, and even an annoying ringback tone, to Verizon subscribers. As if all that exposure weren't enough, Verizon is also ponying up to make a music video featuring the winning band, which--you guessed it--will be downloadable from V CAST as well.[Via MocoNews]

How do you celebrate the 250th birthday of a master composer such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart? Well if you're behind the er, success of Crazy Frog then naturally you squish all that classical goodness down into a highly consumable ringtone...120 of 'em to be exact, from Wagner, Bach, Beethoven, and indeed Mozart hisdamnself. And 'cause it's available from Jamster Germany you'd better be prepared for possible spam if you just gotta have Flute Concerto in G Major as your über unique identity.[Via MocoNews]

We can't say we'd really look forward to being notified of our calls via a few tennis grunts or thwacks, but if that's your thing, Sony Ericsson is launching some Limited Edition "tennis camera phones" that include all sorts WTA Tour content like wallpapers, ringtones and screensavers. They're bundling the content with K750i, K600i,Z520i, K700i, and K300i devices, or you can nab the stuff on their website as free downloads.[Via picturephoning.com]

Mac OS Tones.com is a place you get Mac system sounds for your cell phone. They have classic system sounds, eWorld, and Newton sounds. You can even get the chimes of death, including the 6100/7100 breaking-glass car crash death chime! For a $9.95 fee, you gain unlimited download access to their sounds and can use their WAP-push tools to send the MP3's to your phone. You may also transfer the MP3's via Bluetooth or data cable. Of course, your phone has to support the use of MP3 as ringtones and have some way of receiving the files.
