  • Rumorang: NiGHTS returning on the Wii -- Part 2

We are reporting on this because we continue to get tips on it, but we emphasize that next month is April and this could all be one giant hoax. GoNintendo reports April's issue of Official Nintendo Magazine says, "Step back in time as a classic game makes a long overdue return! Only in next month's Official Nintendo Magazine." Looking at the picture and connecting the dots shows what appears to be the NiGHTS logo. Earlier this year there were subtle hints about the return of NiGHTS via the Nintendo Wii, so we'll give this rumor a little bit of wiggle room. This isn't the first time ONM has been a hype creator. Last year they created Resident Evil hype by using a Leon Kennedy silhouette to promote their next issue, a fact they later swept under the rug. That was actually strike two. Strike one came in early 2006 when ONM, with their "unrivaled access," said the Wii's stand would double as the power supply. Is this NiGHTS related hype strike three, or will ONM knock it out of the park?See also: NiGHTS returning on the Wii Rumor: Sega Saturn games to appear on Wii Virtual Console [Thanks to all who sent this in]

Wednesday's rumorang about Incognito's online-only Warhawk becoming a Blu-ray title has been gracefully tossed away once more. The "semi-official" Sony blog, ThreeSpeech, sets the record straight and rubbishes a Sony representative's previous comments to IGN about the game seeing disc-based distribution. "Sony have advised us that it will be available as a download only for the time being and that a statement will be released if that position should change."Now that we have the issue of distribution out of the way, perhaps we can start focusing on pricing and, oh yes, whether or not the game will be any good. Thanks to the always reliable services of machine translation and Powerpoint slides, we're free to speculate on the possible inclusion of Samsung's new -- and, at 1.8", diminutive -- 60GB hard drive making its way into the PSP. Of course, we heard rumors of a 50GB PSP2 nearly two years ago, with rumors of mini PSPs, flash-based PSPs, touch-screen PSPs and, according to PlayStation Magazine, a Samsung flash-based PSP2 since then. Did Samsung let something slip in their slideshow? Perhaps that flash deal led to the creation of this new drive, engineered specifically for this application? There's an awful lot of smoke around this one ...[Via PSP Fanboy]

  • Rumorang: Apple's game console

Here we go again, another rumorang. AppleInsider is quoting Prudential analyst Jesse Tortora who thinks it's a "distinct possibility" that Apple is looking to enter the video game market in a more significant way than iPod game downloads. His evidence? Apple has recently "hired game developers at both the software and hardware levels." Well that settles it. Expect the iConsole any day now.Tortora thinks that Apple will be forced into the highly competitive console market by downloadable TV and movie offerings from the likes of Sony and Microsoft. We don't buy it though ... the Apple iTV seems focused on a distinctly different segment of the market than the high end gaming machines from MS and Sony. Tortora also said that Apple's brand name and design savvy would help any console they released, but Apple's lack of games experience and connections in the games industry would likely hurt them more. After all, the Apple brand and design weren't enough to save the Pippin. We'd like to buy into the wishful thinking that causes this rumor to pop up every few months, but until something more substantial comes down the pike, we've got to call BS.

  • Rumorang: Internal 360 HD-DVD rumors outed?

It seems like just a couple months ago we were throwing this old chestnut out the window and now, like a Siamese cat on a perilous journey, it's returned to us, more or less unchanged. This time, Digitimes is reporting that Microsoft is working on a "new-generation" of Xbox 360s equipped with one of those fancy HD-DVD drives on the inside instead on the side. Who says? "Sources" in Taiwan's no doubt well connected optical disc drive industry. Last time it was an Australian Toshiba rep wondering aloud and Microsoft following right behind, dancing the PR two-step, stating there are "no plans to release the Xbox 360 with an internal HD DVD drive." It should also come as no surprise, they've responded "we do not comment on rumors and speculation" to this latest rumor. While that first dismissal seems pretty unequivocal, you better believe they've considered such a move, weighed it against consumer backlash, price, and demand, before deciding to pursue it. Digitimes says we could expect the new consoles in the first half of 2007 "at the soonest." Let's work on getting that external drive out the door first before we start getting worked up over Xbox 360v2. A newly discovered Gamestop and EB Games listing reveals an Xbox 360 HDMI cable, a rather ponderous product considering the fact that the console does not have the necessary port to accomodate such a miraculous transmissive device. Is it an expensive adapter that automagically goes from the bulky 360 AV connector to an HDMI output? Feel free to entertain such a possibility, so long as you remember that Microsoft wants nothing to do with it. After constantly pestering them for a comment, they informed us that the product was not one of theirs and that "Microsoft has not announced any additional support beyond component video for HD output. MS is watching the market closely and they will continue to evaluate any options in the face of consumer demand." Unless the face of consumer demand becomes crumpled in a furious frown regarding the lack of HDMI support, don't expect this retail listing (and they're usually so reliable!) to signify a change in Microsoft's strategy. Back in July, when handed the rumor of a new Xbox 360 equipped with an HDMI port, Microsoft promptly tossed it away and insisted that "you don't need HDMI for HD gaming." We fully expect the HDMI rumorang to return again sometime in the future -- catch it here when it does.[Via Digg, Xbox Evolved. Thanks Jayman16]See also: High-end PS3 shipping without HDMI cable
