    It's been quite a while since I trekked through EverQuest II's Darklight Wood with a newly minted shadowknight, and the time seems right to take another look at one of the game's grand adventuring zones. Between the influx of newbs flocking to SOE servers thanks to EQ2X and the Norrathian expatriates returning to possibly rekindle their former flame, a tour of one of the game's more noteworthy locales is in order.   • The Daily Grind: "Are we there yet?"

    Some of you surely played EverQuest back in the day. Whether it was your first MMO or not, one thing's for sure: it was the first huge MMO. When we say huge, we're not referring to subscription numbers; we're talking about the size of the world. It was much grander than that of Ultima Online, Everyone who played EQ remembers his or her first trip from Freeport to Qeynos or vice versa.That trip was a very dire one, especially for a level 10 character. If memory serves, you had to go through Kithicor, the goblin dungeon of Runnyeye, the Beholder's maze (that was the most dangerous part, since it was all narrow canyons), the orc-sieged Highpass Hold, and of course all of the Karanas, griffins and giants be damned. It was not safe. It also took a really, really long time. If you were coming originally from Faydwer, before any of this you also had to take a fairly long boat ride -- certainly much longer than the almost-instant inter-continental rides in World of Warcraft.But the journey was exciting. It actually felt like it was an epic adventure. In most recent MMOs, fast travel is prevalent and everything is streamlined to take as little time as possible. As the genre has become more casual with regards to travel time and danger, have we lost something? Are there no more epic cross-continental treks full of thrilling close calls?

  • EverQuest 2 Game Update 46 goes live

    The tempest is gathering. Runnyeye, a storied dungeon since the days of the original EverQuest, is now a more dangerous locale. EverQuest 2 Game Update 46 is now live on the game servers, and we have some new media to go along with it. We've been previewing this content for some time now. You might recall Brenda Holloway's fantastic walkthroughs of The Void Storms live event, or the new heroic version of the Runnyeye dungeon. Make sure to check out the Void Storms while you can, because that event is only running through the middle of July. Also make sure to check out improvements to Chelsith, Shard of Fear, and the Estate of Unrest; these locales will now offer up status points for adventurers brave enough to face them and survive.   • EQ2's Runnyeye gets a revamp!

    The first thing EverQuest 2 game designer Steve "Saavedra" Kramer did when given the task of revamping Runnyeye was to go through and clean up all the trash. "The goblins were expecting some guests, after all, and it wouldn't do to invite dignitaries into a hovel." Well, EQ2 fans have become attached to their hovels, and the EQ2 designers want them to keep returning to their favorite haunts. In 2005, Nektropos Castle was re-imagined in the new level 50 instance "Return to Nektropos Castle", and then again in 2006 as a level 70 instance, "Nektropos Castle: Tribulation". Deathfist Citadel was turned from a raid zone into a single group zone with new drops and new armor sets for 40ish players in 2007. Now Runnyeye's time has come, and Saavedra has big plans for it. A nice, new, shiny Runnyeye instance for level 80 players. The goblins are sharpening their knives already.

  • EQ2 community zone reviews: Runnyeye

    The EQ2 Players site hosts a player-written review of one of EverQuest II's zones every week, and this week the focus is the goblin dungeon Runnyeye. Player Xalmat of the Permafrost server shares his knowledge of the zone, including the basics like how to get there and what level you should be to visit, to a detailed and lengthy rundown of strategies to use when moving through the zone, and even a handy list of some named mobs to look out for.
