Sales data for the year have come in regarding the UK and Nintendo's brain-empowering software on the DS ranked pretty darn high on the list. Both Dr Kawashima's Brain Training and More Brain Training from Dr. Kawashima were on the list, with the first title only being beaten by FIFA 08. You folks in the UK really love your soccer football, eh?The full list is as follows: FIFA 08 (EA) Dr Kawashima's Brain Training (Nintendo) Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Activision) Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (Konami) More Brain Training from Dr Kawashima (Nintendo) Halo 3 (Microsoft) The Simpsons Game (EA) Wii Play (Nintendo) Assassin's Creed (Ubisoft) WWE Smackdown VS Raw 2008 (THQ) [Via Joystiq]

  • Wii Fit breaks a million sweats in Japan

While we're not as shocked as Richie up there, we are surprised that Wii Fit has sold over a million in Japan. In little over a month, the bundle has managed to show many in Japan that it's to be taken seriously, and not the flash in the pan that some have come to think Wii Sports is. The real question is: did it inspire weight loss and healthy living for any of its adopters?Any of our readers outside of Japan planning on picking this up when a release date is revealed?%Gallery-4745%[Via GamesIndustry.biz]

  • DS overtakes PS2 lifetime sales in Japan

var digg_url = 'http://www.digg.com/nintendo/Nintendo_DS_overtakes_PS2_lifetime_sales_in_Japan'; Over the past few months, we've all grown used to digesting statistics and factoids that sum up the DS's dominance in Japan. That's not to say we've grown tired of them, however, so here's another pretty sweet stat: over the holiday period, the DS whooshed effortlessly past the lifetime sales of Sony's PlayStation 2.That's according to Japanese sales tracker Media Create, which got its abacus out to calculate that the DS has now shifted 20,954,157 units, compared to 20,901,468 PS2s. What's even more impressive is how quickly Nintendo's handheld has pulled off the feat -- let's not forget that Sony's console has been on the Japanese market for an extra four and a half years. A hearty "Congrats!" to you, Nintendo.[Via NeoGAF]

  • Microsoft: Wii's success can't last

Microsoft is obviously upset. Before Sony emerged on the scene with their ridiculously-priced units and varied SKUs, Microsoft looked like it was going to be the leader this generation. They were pumped about their middle-ground price and the features of their console. Best of both worlds, we're sure they thought. But then the Wii changed everything. Now, Nintendo is back on top and arguably enjoying more success than they've ever enjoyed in the past. And Microsoft's head of marketing, Jeff Bell, thinks the honeymoon will be over soon and Nintendo's success is "unsustainable." To elaborate, Bell said "Clearly, we have a competitor where they win and no one else wins." He further commented "That is not sustainable, it's never been sustainable."Can't say we agree with him, as the console's first year has been nothing but amazing for the system and we fail to see how Nintendo's success means everyone loses. For one, Nintendo won't lose, because they'll be winning. As for Nintendo remaining successful with the Wii, sure, they're going to need to keep bringing desirable software to the platform in order to stay viable, but with Wii Fit on the horizon, as well as other things Nintendo undoubtedly has up their sleeve, we're sure this popularity will continue, if not grow.[Via GamePro]

  • Question: What do this lady and the DS have in common?

    12.18.2007

Answer: they're both record breakers!Obviously, that's pretty much where the similarities end. See, rather than spend 27 years growing its fingernails, Nintendo's handheld has just shattered an entirely different record: the record for most hardware sales in a 7-day period in the UK. Last week, it sold just over 200,000 units, leaving thousands of would-be customers disappointed (reader, I was one such customer).Incidentally, if you're feeling an uneasy sense of déjà vu, we understand -- after all, it was only last month that the DS broke the exact same record, notching up 191,000 sales in a single week.

Well now, this is a picture all too familiar to you, fine reader, painted time and time again before your eyes. It's one that has lost most of its zest and ability to shock and awe you. So, know that the Wii came close to selling a million in November (thanks to a very strong push over Thanksgiving), only failing to reach that wonderful number by 19,000 units.Hardware sales are as follows: DS Lite: 1.53m 1.07m (234%) Wii: 981K 462K (89%) Xbox 360: 770K 404K (110%) PSP: 567K 281K (98%) PS2: 496K 312K (169%) PS3: 466K 345K (285%) Be sure to head past the break for the top software titles.

  • DS sold 6 million in U.S. this year, Nintendo toots own horn

Nintendo has dished out a press release, reminding us all that the DS is one popular device. In selling 6 million units through November 30th of this year, Nintendo has figured out that the sales break down to about one DS sold every 5 seconds, causing them to suspect it'll be the top-selling video game system of the year. That's pretty damn impressive, if we may say so.Of course, those strong Thanksgiving sales did their fair share of helping the DS reach this goal. But, it still has a bit to go before it reaches the kind of popularity it has in Japan.

  • Wii loses to PS3 in Japan during November

    11.30.2007

Looks like November in Japan fared better for Sony than it did for Nintendo, as sales for the PS3 beat out the Wii. Selling 183,217 units to Nintendo's 159,193 units, it would appear that Sony's system is becoming the more desirable system in the region and a trend is emerging. The reality, however, is likely very different. With the Wii being so scarce (despite Nintendo supposedly manufacturing almost 2 million units a month), as well as Sony introducing a cheaper 40gb model of their PS3 console, the factors involved contributed to a favorable month for Sony. Should Nintendo manage to produce enough consoles so that the Wii could actually be on the shelf for consumers when they want to buy it, then we're sure we would be writing a very different story right now.

  • Nintendo sells a lot of Wiis over Thanksgiving

    11.28.2007

Sales for the week of Thanksgiving were ridiculous for Nintendo, as the U.S. saw an incredible 350,000 Wii units hit retail shelves and get eagerly snatched up by consumers just as quickly. As if that wasn't impressive enough, word is that the Wii sold 300,000 units the week prior, meaning that in a two week span, the Wii sold a ridiculous 650,000 units. If these sales hold up for the last week of November, the console could very well sell near a million in November alone. Ridiculous just doesn't begin to explain it!

We haven't seen the UK been so receptive to something since the black plague. OK, maybe that was out of line, but you folks across the pond are seriously down with the DS. And, that is something we can get down with. Over the last week, the DS sold over 191,000 units. This breaks the record for any hardware format selling in a 7-day period in the UK, which is the largest gaming market in Europe. The previous record was set by Sony's PSP device, which sold 185,000 units in its first week, after the handheld went on sale on September 1st, 2005.[Via Nintendic]

Rejoice! The Wii has managed to skedaddle back on top, enjoying the comfortable cushion of the NPD throne. In resting its behind in the big chair, you can see the Wii made sure that the Xbox 360's time at the top was short-lived. Welcome back, Nintendo. We've missed you.The hardware sales: Nintendo Wii: 519K (5 million total) Nintendo DS: 458K (13.6 million total) Microsoft Xbox 360: 366K (7.1 million total) Sony PSP: 286K (8.8 million total) Sony PlayStation 2: 184K (39.4 million total) Sony PlayStation 3: 121K (1.9 million total) The top 10 software sales: Halo 3 (all three SKUs - Xbox 360) -- 433.8K Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock w/ guitar (Xbox 360) -- 383.2K Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock w/ guitar (Wii) -- 286.3K Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock w/ guitar (PS2) -- 271.1K Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (DS) -- 262.8K Wii Play (Wii) -- 239.7K The Orange Box (Xbox 360) -- 238.4K Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock standalone (PS2) -- 231.7K FIFA Soccer '08 (PS2) -- 129.7K Brain Age 2: More Training in Minutes a Day (DS) -- 116.9K [Via Joystiq]

  • NPD says never mind, maybe

Following yesterday's news that the NPD would be scaling back their monthly gift of console hardware and software sales figures, the NPD has come out to answer the hordes of screaming gamers who look to this information every month to be ... well, informed about their hobby and passion. NPD spokesperson David Riley doesn't want us to think it's such a bleak future, however, as he explains it could very well be a decision left up to the console makers.Turns out, up until November 2006, it wasn't policy to share the data. But, due to a torrent of media requests and some internal conversations, the company eventually came to the conclusion that the numbers would be released. So, given that, if the go-ahead is given by the console makers, then this could all be a lot of nothing and NPD will continue to do things as usual.[Via Joystiq]

  • NPD to play hide-and-seek with sales figures in the future

You know, as people obsessed with gaming, we often find ourselves relentlessly looking over screens for upcoming games, video trailers and sales numbers. For fanboys (and fangirls), it's often the ammunition that fuels their "lol ur console is teh suk" cannons, allowing the great and wonderful internet debate to rage on in message boards far and wide. Now, the NPD is attempting to take that away from North American gamers, as word hits that the monthly NPD figures will no longer be accessible to the public proper. So, where it might have been possible to see console sales figures and top ten software sales, we're now only going to have access to the top five software sales. Of course, console manufacturers Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft can still release the information ... if they wish.[Via Joystiq]

According to Chart Track, an independent sales tracking company, the DS has sold 4 million in the United Kingdom. That isn't the only interesting piece of the news coming out of this, however, as Nintendo reveals that over half of these 4 million consumers (about 66%) were female. One in four DS owners are also into the brain exercises, apparently, as it is revealed that Dr Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain? sold over 1 million copies in the region.

Yesterday, a weird report surfaced over at GAF showing some sales data that seemed to support the word that Nintendo sold 13.17 million Wii consoles worldwide. We danced here at the Wii Fanboy offices, but we couldn't understand the rest of the report. It was in language so ancient and beautiful that our lowly little retinas could not decipher the information it held within. Then, a hero emerged, silent and mysterious, to translate the script for all of us lowly mortals. What was within the report was both equal parts shocking and exciting. Well, maybe more of the latter, but you get the idea. It's good news! The report shows that Wii Play has sold over 6.32 million worldwide, with Mario Party 8 selling over almost half as much with 2.89 million worldwide. Other notable titles include Super Paper Mario (1.74 million), Mario Strikers Charged (1.33 million) and Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree (1.38 million). Of course, the top seller is Wii Sports, which has sold 11.86 million (930,000 units sold in Japan), which isn't surprising considering it comes bundled with the system here in the United States.Update: It's almost ... not over. Silly me.[Via GoNintendo]

  • Blu-ray (nearly) maintains 2-to-1 sales lead over HD DVD

    10.24.2007

We last saw official numbers for Blu-ray / HD DVD disc sales in August, and for those wondering what a month or so would do to the race, we've got extraordinarily uneventful news. According to Home Media Research, sales of Blu-ray titles from January 1st to September 30th of this year now total 2.6-million units, while the HD DVD camp has moved some 1.4-million flicks in the same period. Granted, HD DVD has managed to close the gap somewhat, and analysts are expecting the impressive sales of Transformers (among other notable Q4 releases) to narrow the margin further by the year's end. 'Course, we're no closer now to settling this whole format war than we were this summer, but it's always enjoyable to pick apart the statistics, no?

  • Fun fact: 1 DS for every 7 people in Japan

    10.22.2007

You know, we never thought about this ourselves, but the ratio of people to DSes in Japan is pretty amazing. With an estimated 127,433,494 people living in Japan and 18.11 million units sold in the country, it comes to about 1 DS unit for every 7 people. If you want to go by a different figure, VGChartz has the handheld selling 19.72 million in the area, bringing that figure down to 6.4.When you break the numbers down to something more personal like this, it really makes the weight of the sales figures that much more significant, wouldn't you agree?

As if anyone didn't see this coming from a mile away, the latest NPD sales data shows Nintendo is still enjoying that crisp and clean air at the top of the mountain. Breathing in deeply and staring out at all of the lands below, Nintendo has been living alone up here for quite some time. It gets a bit lonely, but it's a small price to pay for excellence.Hardware sales: Nintendo DS: 561.9K Nintendo Wii: 381.8K Sony PSP: 290.1K [Updated] Sony PlayStation 2: 270.7K (via Sony press release) Microsoft Xbox 360: 198.4K Sony PlayStation 3: 98.5K Software sales: Mario Party 8 (Wii) Wii Play w/remote (Wii) Pokémon Diamond (DS) Pokémon Pearl (DS) Forza Motorsport 2 (Xbox 360) Guitar Hero II w/guitar (PS2) Guitar Hero II w/guitar (Xbox 360) Pokémon Battle (Wii) Resident Evil 4 (Wii) The Darkness (Xbox 360)

According to the latest figures over at VG Chartz, the Wii has sold over 9 million worldwide. This puts it just shy of current top dog, the Xbox 360, by little over 1 million units and above the third place Sony PS3 by about 5 million. Unlike the Xbox 360, however, is the Wii's customer base, which shares healthy mix of Japanese and U.S. owners. So, are we placing bets on when the Wii will surpass Microsoft's console?

  • HD DVD players outselling Blu-ray alternatives... at the moment

You should know by now that these brief claims of superiority won't mean much when the other camp flips the numbers around and cranks out a jaw dropping figure of its own, but the North American HD DVD Promotional Group has recently announced that it's currently livin' the high life. Supposedly, standalone HD DVD players now hold 60-percent of the market share amongst standalone high-definition disc players, and the recent "aggressive spring retail and marketing campaigns" are to thank. Unsurprisingly, Toshiba's heavily (albeit momentarily) discounted HD-A2 was dubbed the "best-selling next-gen DVD player model to date," and we were even told that over 75,000 HD DVD titles were sold in the final week of May alone. The countdown for the Blu-ray rebuttal starts... now.
