For the most part, smartphone peripherals can make your mobile devices even more powerful than they already are. A new add-on, dubbed Seek Thermal, aims to do just that by bringing extra imaging features to your handset. The tiny gadget can be attached to an iPhone or Android smartphone (via Lightning port and microUSB, respectively) and, thanks to a companion app, turn that otherwise common device into one with a thermal camera. Seek Thermal notes it wants to help users across different scenarios, such as being aware of what's around them at night time or, why not, look at clogged pipes throughout the household, just to mention a couple. If you're interested, be ready to pay a premium -- both the iPhone and Android models are priced at $199 a piece. • Samsung Seek takes Boost Mobile in new form factor directions

The classic landscape QWERTY slider layout is nothing new -- at least, not by most carriers' standards -- but for a Sprint subsidiary still tied up in the vintage world of iDEN, hardware moves at a slightly slower pace. That's right: the Samsung Seek becomes Boost Mobile's first-ever touchscreen device with a side-sliding full keyboard, offering a 2.6-inch QVGA display paired with a 1.3 megapixel camera and microSD expansion up to 32GB -- a pretty modest feature set, hence the pretty reasonable contract-free price of $149.99 (compare that to the recently-launched i1, for example, which goes for $300). Look for it to hit online come August 25, by the end of the month at Best Buy and RadioShack, in Sprint stores in September, and Target in October -- whew! -- but if you're itching to get it right this second, it should already be floating around at some independent retailers. • Samsung Seek gets real for Sprint: touchscreen and QWERTY for peanuts

So that rumored Seek for Sprint from Samsung turned out to be totally real -- and what's more, it's available a few weeks earlier than we'd expected (in other words, you can buy it right now). Sure, your average power user isn't going to give this little guy a second look, but if nothing else, you could argue that the Seek helps set a new standard for functionality and design at a ridiculously low price point for a brand new device by offering a touchscreen, QWERTY slide, 3.5mm headphone jack, and QVGA display for $30 on contract. Of course, that low price doesn't come without its disadvantages; the phone lacks 3G and hobbles along with a 1.3 megapixel cam -- and you've got to consider that this is the same carrier offering the Pixi for free -- so maybe it's not such a great buy after all. Look for it now in blue and red, with a pink version (complete with stylized back) launching early next month. Follow the break for Samsung's press release.%Gallery-92651%

  • Samsung Seek a dirt-cheap touchphone for Sprint?

Regardless of market segment, touch is all the rage these days, which means it's difficult for carriers to ignore it -- even in the cheapest corners of its product range. Word on the street is that Sprint will be shoring up its ultra-cheap touch offerings next month with the introduction of the Samsung Seek, a 2.6-inch QVGA piece with a meager 1.3 megapixel cam, microSD memory expansion, and not bloody much else. Color choices will be "Scarlet," "Cool Blue," and -- later on, if you want to hold out for the special edition -- "Fantasy Pink." This is all hearsay at this point, but the phone seems real enough with the FCC passage of a phone bearing the same model number a few months back, and we're hearing talk of a blockbuster $30 contract price -- not bad for a phone that almost looks mid- to high-end if you squint and forget the spec sheet for a moment.
