It's been a long time since we took a Fanpoll around here, and it's high time we start doing it again. What better way to start than to pit the video game skateboarding champ versus its newest rival? With the release of skate, many skateboarding fans have found themselves grinding right past Tony Hawk's Project 8. Well, Tony's back with Proving Ground, which just released today. So, here's our question to you, which game is better, Proving Ground or skate? Give us your feedback in the poll after the break. We'd prefer if you only answer once you've actually tried both games, but there's not exactly much we can do to stop you.

Happy Folklore week! Sure, Japan has had it for a couple of months now but since then we've been waiting patiently for the localisation process to be completed. This week our waiting pays off. But Folklore isn't the only big hitter to be released this week. Here's the full release list:US Games FIFA 08 Folklore Sega Rally Revo European Games Skate NBA 08 Folklore Asian Games NBA Live 08 Rise From Lair The Godfather: The Don's edition Not a bad haul. We're really pleased to see that Folklore is being released in the same week in Europe and America. We're also happy to see Skate finally get its PS3 release over in Europe. As for Asia, we're intrigued to see how well Lair (named Rise From Lair over there) sells, considering its critical acclaim. Don't forget, if there's a game on the list that looks interesting to you then feel free to order it, regardless of territory. Your PS3 loves games from other regions. Release dates are subject to constant change, so make sure you check with your local store before venturing out of the house.

  • Today's most relaxing trick: Skate 'laid back crash'

Sometimes ragdoll physics can actually prove more natural. Sure, most crashes don't send you floating and flipping effortless through the wind, regardless of the laws of gravity, but those crashes aren't nearly as fun.Take this video, for instance. In reality, this guy would've likely fallen headfirst and spend hours trying to find his brain on the ground -- not because it fell far, but can you imagine how hard it is to find something when you lack cognitive function? Thankfully, we don't have to worry about such philosophical queries; instead, enjoy the video embedded after the break.

Whoosh! That's the sound of games literally flying off the production lines and onto shelves. Today's release list is possibly the best yet. Remember when we were having weeks like these? Thank goodness those are over. Here's the full release list:US Games Skate World Series of Poker 2008 EU Games Stuntman: Ignition SEGA Rally FIFA 08 Ratatouille Asian Games Warhawk The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion This week at least one high profile game being released in each territory. We're intrigued to see how Oblivion and Warhawk will do over there here in Japan. All of these games are subject to the constant change in whim of the Game Fates, so don't start moaning if any last-minute delays occur. It's not our fault. If you see something on that list that you like the look of, but it's not in your region, then don't fret. Simply import the game and play it on your region free PS3. Simple. Which titles will you be picking up?

  • Why no skate demo?

Waiting for a demo on the PlayStation Store is like waiting for a bus. You know it's bound to come, but only vaguely know what time it should probably get there. The demo for skate seemed to hit a few more red lights than other demos -- a demo has been available on a certain other system for a week and we expected a demo for the PS3 this week. No dice! So, what gives? Patrick Seybold explains: "contrary to popular reports, I believe that the Skate demo was just officially submitted to us for test last week. Its obvious that many of you want it, and we'll do our best to get it up there as soon as we can. Hold tight."We know it takes a little while to make sure a demo is solid enough to slap up on the PS Store, so holding tight is really our only option. It's kind of funny, though. EA claimed to have sent this demo several weeks ago for approval, but Sony says they only got it last week. EA has done very little to merit our trust, but why would they give one platform a demo faster than another? Conspiracy theorists, assemble! The rest of us, wait until this Thursday and we'll probably have the skate demo at last.

And so it begins, the epic battle for video game skateboarding dominance. For the last several years, if you wanted to play a skateboarding title, you had but one choice: Tony Hawk. Now, EA enters the ring with its take on realistic skateboarding, aptly titled skate -- the game should finally be hitting shelves today. It just so happens that there is a demo out for Tony Hawk's Proving Ground as well. Now that you've got a chance, we suggest you give them both a go (you can always try out the skate demo if you're skittish about purchasing). The skateboard war has begun, and round one needs a winner.Still, skateboarding isn't for everyone (we can barely even stand up on one of the things), so we have to ask, as usual, what will you be playing this weekend?Leaderboards:Xbox 360 Fanboy LeaderboardXbox 360 Fanboy Leaderboard Mk. For the first time in a very long time, Tony Hawk has some real competition this year from EA's Skate. Though Tony Hawk Proving Ground has already won the award for most appropriate title of the year, the contest for the top skating franchise is still wide open. With the Skate demo already available, you can now officially lay odds on how the battle will pan out as the THPG demo backside kickflips its way on to Xbox Live. You've seen the comparison videos, now you can get some hands-on time with both. Here's the big question: Which one will you be getting? Will you welcome a new succinctly-titled overlord, or will you keep Tony in his throne?%Gallery-3120%

A post on the official skate message boards has confirmed that the game has suffered a minor (and unexplained) delay. Those of you rushing out to pick up your copy today (complete with "new game Tuesday" smell) will be disappointed to learn that skate won't be hitting stores until Friday. Granted, it's not a long delay at all, but for those that have been longing for skate's unique new take on the sport, an extra two days can be a lifetime. Ah well, you can play through the demo just a few more times, can't you?[Via 1UP]

Over at Xbox 360 Achievements, there are a slew of new Achievements listed for retail and arcade games alike. They have Two Worlds, Skate, which came straight from EA, Fatal Inertia, NHL 08, & Medal of Honor: Airborne. On the XBLA side of things, there is the cheaper of the two Arcade games that came out today, Space Giraffe, Fatal Fury Special and we're especially happy to see Sonic 2 make it there as well. A cool little reveal about Sonic 2 is that it will have online multiplayer, derived from the splitscreen multiplayer found in the Genesis version. So, those are plenty of lists for you to examine for your next target of 1000 or 200 Gamerscore. Retail: Read: Two Worlds Read: skate. After an unfortunate delay, the demo for skate from Electronic Arts has finally hit Xbox Live Marketplace. The demo is, according to Joystiq, a spiritual experience. You have thirty minutes to grind as much fun as you can out of the skate park included in the demo. A tutorial helps you master the flick-it controls, and then you are set loose upon the new skating frontier. When your done, don't forget to upload a movie of your exploits for all the gaming world to see. Should Tony be watching his back? You tell us.

After being held up for six days, EA's Skate demo has finally arrived on Xbox live, begging to be downloaded and obsessed over. We're just a tad bit obsessed with it ourselves, going as far as calling it "a spiritual experience." Will you reach gaming nirvana as well? Not unless you can achieve that state within thirty minutes of this timed demo.Your thirty minutes in heaven takes place in the community center skate park in the suburbs and it's fully equipped to experience a good chunk of what's possible in Skate. After a brief tutorial of the flick-it controls, you'll be let loose on the park, free to do whatever you please. What really makes this demo special is the ability to save and upload a movie using the saved films feature so please, feel free to share your creations with the rest of the class. As for PlayStation 3 owners, your demo will be arriving sometime soon as folks at EA have said that it's been completed, sent out and is now in Sony's hands.

First we were promised it on August 15th, then we were told about its delay, but now EA is now ready to commit to a new release date for the somewhat highly anticipated Skate demo. Confirmed to be available on the Xbox Live Marketplace next Tuesday, August 21st is the once (hopefully not twice) delayed Skate demo for everyone to download and enjoy. So skater gamers, get your download fingers ready for Tuesday when you'll get to experience EA's version of Tony Hawk skating fun and solidify your opinion of which skating game purchase you'll be making this year.

It's time for another progress report on EA's upcoming title skate. Utilizing the two analog sticks to perform more "realistic" tricks, the game has garnered a lot of press for possibly being the game to dethrone Tony Hawk's reign of terror! We exaggerate, of course, but the game itself is on the right track to do just that. After you start the game, you'll be asked to participate in a "game" of S.K.A.T.E. which plays like the basketball game of H.O.R.S.E. -- one guys pulls off a trick, the other person must repeat the same trick. No scores; just ability. That's cool.Unlike the Tony Hawk games, the streets aren't riddled with ramps or arbitrary railings. It's a city, so there are benches and stairs and all that, along with some curved building structures. If you want ramps and such, head off to one of the designated skating parks. Or be more imaginative with your surroundings. There are multiple contests and tournaments to enter all across the city, so there's plenty of chances to pull out your best moves on different scenic grounds. We're looking forward to hearing more about this game!

  • Video upload problems force Skate demo delay

We've got some bad news for eager Skate fans who were anticipating the demo release on August 15th. We'll make this as quick and painless as we can ... your promised Skate demo will not be out this Wednesday, because EA has officially delayed its Marketplace appearance. According to the official Skate forums, the reason for the delay is due to problems that surfaced when trying to get the nifty video upload feature to work properly. You see, Skate will be the first game demo to allow content to be uploaded to an outside website and the complexities they've stumbled upon have forced the delay. But fear not skaters, because the delay should only last a few days or a week at most and will not affect the game's September 12th retail release. You know, you could always pass the time by playing some BioShock.[Via Joystiq]

Originally due out on August 15th, EA's Scott Blackwood has announced that the Xbox 360 demo for Skate has been hit with a short delay. How short? In an official forum post, Blackwood says, "We're not quite sure yet ... hopefully not more than a week."We spoke with EA about the cause for this delay and their spokesperson told us, "We are trying something completely new for an Xbox Marketplace demo in allowing people to play the game and upload footage they take in-game to our Skate website. The skate.reel video upload functionality is much more technically complex than a standard offline demo, and the number of moving parts have resulted in undue & hard-to-predict delays." Having recently played the demo area (and well beyond) and scoped out the included features, we assure you that it'll be worth the wait. The good news is that this delay has no bearing whatsoever on the final game, which will still be shipping out on September 12th for the Xbox 360 and September 24th for the PlayStation 3.

After Jake Brown showed us just how dangerous a mega ramp can be at the X Games last night, we've felt a bit queasy just thinking about our favorite skaters taking on the colossal structure. It being X Games weekend and all, leave it to EA to show off that portion of Skate, along with an absolutely terrifying trip down the mega ramp. You won't be taking that plunge on August 15th when you get your hands on the demo, so behind the cut we have the street portion of their X Games trailers which is a bit more in line with what you'll be able to accomplish. Chris Haslam? In our video games? Oh, happy days are here.

EA just announced the release date(s) for skate, their much-ballyhooed skateboarding sim. Kick-flipping its way into retail stores on September 12th and 14th in the U.S. and Europe respectively for the Xbox 360 version (a slightly delayed September 24th and October 5th for the PlayStation 3 versions), skate promises to reinvent the way skateboarding games are played with its Flickit controls. You know we like the way it plays, but how will you know before plunking down your coin? If you're an Xbox 360 owner, you can sample the goods with an Xbox Live Marketplace demo dated for August 15th. The demo not only walks you through the controls, but lets you play around with the skate.reel functionality, letting you capture footage of your session to share online, all Game 3.0-like. %Gallery-3866%

So you won't be able to explore the city of San Vanelona as a woman, but it's not about to stop you from getting all excited over EA's Skate. We're fairly bummed ourselves, but we share your enthusiasm for some honest to Gonz skateboarding. In the latest of their video docs, assistant producer Chris Parry takes us through the single player experience that makes up Skate. Chris talks quite a bit regarding the freedom of Skate in that you can essentially do whatever you want from the very start. The character you create is as evolved as he's going to get and so you can choose to either skate around, snapping pictures and videos as you please or "play the game of skateboarding" and pursue fame and fortune through missions and events. So, you know ... in the event that you or someone you know isn't adept enough to land a cover on a magazine, they can at least screw around all they want in the city. Skate is due out this September, though no official date has been set.

  • EA's skate looks pretty darn polished and extreme

We're not scared to admit it -- we've got a pretty biased attitude against Electronic Arts. They aren't the best at making quality titles ... they're more of the Kroger brand soda to Sony or Epic or Konami's name-brand colas. However, things may be turning around. First, Burnout Paradise seems to be built from the ground up on Sony's system and it's looking sharp. Then comes skate. This game looks excellent and the level of polish is impressive. We're not fond of "totally xtreem sportz" titles, but this one really makes us want to reconsider. Interesting dual-analog gameplay mechanics and a more skating-sim style make us squirm with anticipation. Check out the video. We like it!
