UK HDTV viewers now have a second way to receive their free-to-air signals. Pace has launched their own set-top box that will allow people to enjoy soccer football on the BBC. With all the issues Sky is having getting their HD boxes up this might be a great way to enjoy the worlds past-time. Users will need to point their dish 28.2 degrees East and of course have an HDTV. The box will sell for 299 pounds and be available later in June.

The BBC is reporting that many in the UK are facing delays in getting high definition set-top boxes installed due to shortages. While thousands of customers have been installed already, many are getting shuffled back as much as three weeks. As our friends at HDTV UK mention, anyone who didn't preorder their install from Sky already can look forward to an install date of August, after the World Cup broadcast that people there are so looking forward to.HDTV UK however was one of the lucky few to get their high definition boxes installed already, and have a few impressions of it up. Now they finally join us in discussing such mysteries as why does every Discovery HD program feature something getting eaten? Honestly we don't know, but you get used to it after a while.

What do we know about Pantech & Curitel's new SKY IM U-MU110 clamshell (besides the fact that it has a tongue-twister of a model number)? Not much, unfortunately, as AVING is heavy on the images but light on the deets, so all that we can discern about this model -- two megapixel camera, 1GB of memory, EV-DO, external music controls -- comes from pics of the so-called "Jukebox" phone. Besides snapping photos and rocking tunes, pictures seem to indicate that the IM U-MU110 also makes voice calls. No word on such trifles as pricing or release dates/locations, but keep reading for another hot pic...[Via MobileMag]

SkyHD is ready to launch on May 22nd but HDTV UK has their first impressions up about the system with a full review set to come soon. What did they think? They liked it. The box looks great and works like the non-HD ones. The DVR has a 160 gig hard drive in it that can record in 576, 720p and 1080i. They also like the programming offerings specifically Cricket in HD. This is apparently like what football is to us; their killer HD programming. We are sure there is going to be a whole lot more info and reviews once the service officially launches in a week.

The British are so starved for HD content that they're excited about Sky adding the HD channels to the program guide, even though they won't be able to actually watch them until this summer. This is after being teased with a rumour that the service would be available April 1st 2006. They should have known it was a joke by the date. So if you're in the UK and have Sky, check out channels 311 and 312 to see what would be on in HD on Sky Movies.

The other football. Maybe some of our European friends will be giving HD more respect once their favorite sport is being broadcast in high definition. Last weekend it seems Sky showed a few UK journalists a preview of their high definition broadcasts of soccer, and they came away very impressed. This isn't really surprising, if HDTV has a single killer app, it's sports. Football, futbol or otherwise, once you've seen your favorite players in HD there isn't any going back. [Via HDTV UK]

Oh you folks in the UK are in for a real treat: Discovery HD is the final channel in the Sky high-definition offerings. In our opinion, Discovery HD has one of the best (if not the best) archive of high-def footage and programming. From science to nature and everything in between (like Rousch Racing: Driver X), Discovery HD has rocked our HD worlds here in the US for several years.Discovery HD joins the current lineup planned including: Artsworld HD, Sky Sports HD, Sky One HD, Sky Box Office HD, Sky Movies 9 HD, Sky Movies 10 HD and National Geographic HD. How about it, American readers: agree or disagree that Discovery HD is a great addition to the Sky UK lineup? Can you think of a better channel?
