Smartisan's T2 phone is all about metal and minimalism
You may not have heard of Smartisan before, but this Chinese smartphone maker is already three-and-a-half years old and has released two devices so far: the premium T1 and the budget-friendly U1, both of which featuring an insanely long list of unique UI tricks that left us smiling. All good things take time: 19 months after its first flagship model, Smartisan is finally back with a fancy metallic upgrade, the T2, and this time it's less about specs, but more about refining the design in favor of minimalism. No power button, no exposed screws, no visible SIM tray and, most interestingly, no plastic bands on the smooth and subtly rounded aluminum frame. This seamless bezel alone is apparently the outcome of 588 days of research and development, so it's no wonder that this is also a first for Chinese smartphones.
LG is making another Nexus: meet the Nexus 5X
The rumors are true: LG is back to build Google's 5.2-inch Nexus 5X. Leaked repeatedly over the last few weeks, the specs aren't much of a surprise -- or outpacing the also just-announced Nexus 6P -- but it's still packing quite a bit of power, featuring a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 CPU, 2GB of RAM and a 12.3MP rear camera that's capable of shooting 4K video and boasts laser-assisted autofocus and dual flashes. There's a 2,700mAh battery inside, and it's going to be available in both 16GB and 32GB versions with colors including black, white and ice blue. Nexus 5X pricing starts at $379; it will begin shipping in late October and two years of Nexus Protect coverage is available for $69. Update: Pre-ordering for the Nexus 5X (and all the other new hardware) is live now.
Qualcomm's 2015 chips may make you regret getting a new phone this year
Thanks to Moore's Law, anybody can predict that even the most powerful smartphones and tablets coming out right now (the HTC One M8 and Samsung Galaxy S5, for instance) will be made obsolete by whatever flagships get announced in 2015. These predictions fortunately don't have to be based off of speculation anymore, since Qualcomm just revealed the Snapdragon 810 and 808, a pair of 64-bit high-performance chipsets slated to show up in flagship Android devices early next year.
