As memory of Jean-Claude Van Damme's ill-fated epic fades, Capcom will again try its hand at a Street Fighter film adaptation, enlisting the aid of Hyde Park Entertainment (production company behind Seabiscuit-knockoff Dreamer). Justin Marks (Voltron) is on screenplay duty and will reportedly focus the plot on Chun-Li. There has been no confirmation of a new shower scene. The Street Fighter movie's release is set to coincide with the franchise's 20th anniversary in 2008. Hyde Park will shop the project around this week at the American Film Market in Santa Monica.

There's nothing like a good fighting game to let out your aggression in a safe, healthy manner. Of course, hearing the music from said game might bring out those aggressive impulses in an environment that isn't well suited to handle it.Therefore, we here at Joystiq recommend you prepare for the following guitar renditions of Ken, Guile an Zangief's themes from Street Fighter II by finding the nearest arcade and/or video game console and loading it up a game that involves punching and kicking things repeatedly. Your housemates, classmates and/or co-workers will thank you for channeling your destructive impulses away from them and towards something more benign.

  • IGN gives Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded an 8.0

Never to be left out when it comes to beating a dead horse/stealing your money/delivering the goods on past franchises, Capcom is getting in on the retro kick by releasing Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded, which is based on the PS2 version, Oct. 24.The game stuffs nearly 20 of Capcom's greatest arcade games, like Street Fighter II and Ghost 'N Goblins, onto one tiny UMD, and IGN recently got their grubby little mitts on a copy and thought it was a pretty solid title, giving it an 8.0.While they had generally nothing but good things to say about the collection, they did note that "the game does run into the same noticeable flicker and aliasing issues present in the PS2 disc (in all the shooters), while the transparency effects are hindered by some obvious interlacing troubles."Aside from the obvious things like how well the games play, a classics collection really benefits from additional and unlockable content, and Capcom didn't skimp out here. "In fact, there are almost 900 different collectibles that can be uncovered over the course of your play-through, and an interesting slot machine mechanic is used to find them (you're awarded tokens for playing through individual games which can then be gambled with to unlock secrets," IGN wrote. They close by saying, "Reloaded is a solid PSP anthology that's better than its predecessor and one I'd easily recommend for old-school gaming fans everywhere." Mark me down for being totally excited for this one. Knights of the Round is one of my all-time favorite beat 'em ups, and to have it available on the go, has me giddy like a school girl.

When my dad was coming up, one's identity was forged in this simple distinction: The Beatles or the Stones? In my day it became: Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat? This "classic" debate should enjoy a bit of a revival when Midway's Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 is hoisted onto Xbox Live Arcade alongside Street Fighter II' Hyper Fighting next month. Which franchise do you tend to ally with?Note: Midway has not announced UMK3's price or disclosed online multiplayer details.

As we promised last month, we've finally got the price deets and specs on the new Plextor Blu-ray PX-B900A burner. A wad of 10 Benjamins (or 100 Hamiltons, take your pick) will get you this spankin' new drive -- compatible with 25 GB and 50 GB Blu-ray discs and it'll burn BD-R/RE media at 9 MBps, or 2X. For DVDs, it does an 8X burn for DVD-Rs, 4X DVD±R on dual-layer (DL) media, and 5X on DVD-RAM. You've also got support in there for 8X DVD+RW, 6X DVD-RW, 6X max DVD-ROM, 24X CD-R, 16X CD-RW, and 32X CD-ROM. Also, it comes with a package of software: Ulead's Video Studio 10 and Intervideo's WinDVD BD, a Blu-ray media application. Jeez, that's a mouthful. We still think that Blu-ray and HD DVD need to duke it out in a round or two of Street Fighter to settle this debacle.[Via TG Daily]

The retro hits just keep on coming today! This newly released trailer of the upcoming Capcom Classics Reloaded compliation shows off the game in action, and it gets a retro-loving gamer like myself pretty excited. Not only will it feature Street Figher II, and Ghouls 'n Goblins, it'll also come with game-sharing so that you and your friends can play using just one UMD. The compliation will feature more than 15 games, and will collect stats, and save things like cheats and music in galleries that you can easily access. Best of all, it has a nice budget price of $27 shipped on amazon.com. The game comes out October 24th.

  • SF2 enthusiasm starting to lag

While the overall reaction to Street Fighter 2 for Xbox Live Arcade has been positive (based on comments on this site and the average 77 score at Metacritic), there are unhappy with the game's perceived lagginess in both single player and online play. There's also alot of hostility being directed the 360 controller, which went from "best ever" to d-pad deficient over night. Hater response is typified by Tony from the VGM Daily podcast, a self-proclaimed Street Fighter fanatic, who gave the game a none out of five and proclaimed it an abject failure. Only later in his rant do we learn that he's been getting his ass kicked on Live. But even if you chalk up some of the negativity to bitterness and thumb rust, it's clear that Capcom failed to satisfy their hardcore fans, despite numerous delays. It's just that I can't blame the beat downs I suffered on lag.Does this mean that future retro ports will have to be coded from the ground up if we want superior online performace? Maybe developers should quit jerry-rigging old classics, and focus on building new homages that capture that old school flavor with modern convenience.

The world's most anticipated --  and most delayed -- 2D fighter has a new date Down Under. Xbox Australia shows Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting due July 30. Meanwhile, back in the northern hemisphere, the US site still lists the original long gone March release date. Can we get an update Microsoft?Whichever direction your toilet flushes, spend less time worrying about exactly when this game hits Xbox Live Arcade, and more time hoping Capcom managed to fix the gameplay issues that led to less than hyper early reviews.

The much delayed and anticipated Xbox Live Arcade title Street Fighter II' Hyper Fighting has gotten a release date -- at least down under. According to Xbox Australia, the classic 2d fighter is going to see the light of day on July 30 for Xbox 360 owners. Rumored to be released in the Spring, then some time this summer, maybe the Aussie's now know something we don't. The U.S. Xbox site still has the game listed as coming out in March 2006 -- perhaps Microsoft should think about updating that. A lot of gamers have been looking forward to this one, so could our prayers for a firm release date be answered?[Thanks Kevin, via Club Skill]

Club Skill reports that according to an unspecified magazine leak -- we know, it sounds suspect (but there is a screen shot) -- Street Fighter 2 will finally arrive on the Xbox Live Arcade this month, to the tune of 400 points ($5). The leaked info cites at least 12 additional marketplace releases, including Lumines Live, which is scheduled for release in August/September for an unprecedented* 1200 points. Lumines will be joined by Pac-Man (400 points), Frogger (400 points), and Roboblitz (800 points) in the August/September release window. Also of note, is a Kameo add-on that will beef up the game's difficulty and introduce competitive multiplayer elements (500 points). Again, these release dates and price points have not been officially verified, but the leaked report does list accurate information about several content downloads that have already been released/confirmed.*UPDATE: as noted by several commenters, Bankshot Billiards 2 also retails for 1200 points. And, it's worth noting that Lumines for the PSP debuted with a $39.99 price tag (it's now $19.99).

It's the kind of thing you look at and say to yourself "why didn't I think of that?" I'm sure that a lot of copycat examples will be popping up in the next few days: I can't wait to see someone attempt to capture a Mario level up, or a sticky grenade from Halo, or a terrorist facing off a counter terrorist à la Counter-Strike or... you get the point.[Via Wonderland]

  • 360 BC update "in the next few weeks"

    by
    Dan Choi

    06.03.2006

Thanks to the folks at the Gamerscore Blog, we've learned that the next Xbox back compat update "should be out in the next few weeks." In his earlier blast against BC, Peter Moore proclaimed that nobody is concerned about it anymore, but thankfully the gentler Gamerscore peeps have set the record straight, stating: "We know for a fact that there are lots of people who continue to care about backwards compatibility, including the 'Emulation Ninjas' who are working full time on the updates. And those of us posting on this blog. And, of course, many of you." We suppose quarterly updates to the BC list aren't TOO bad (hey, they sure beat semiannual dashboard updates), but getting more than a dozen titles to work each time would definitely help a lot more for those with original Xbox favorites they'd prefer to play on their new machines. Personally, this blogger would like to see the following titles added to the list: Dead or Alive Ultimate, Doom 3, Capcom vs. SNK 2, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Project Gotham Racing 2, LEGO Star Wars, Street Fighter Anniversary Collection, Soul Calibur II, and Capcom Classics Collection. It may not be realistic to expect Street Fighter support when Hyper Fighting is set to hit Live Arcade sometime in the near future, but one can (vainly) hope. While attention has largely been drawn to the barrage of new titles announced for Xbox Live during E3, those gamers who prefer flaming punches to plummeting blocks are likely to have wondered as to the whereabouts of one of Capcom's most revered franchises. Way back in January, Microsoft revealed that Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting was destined to hit Xbox Live Arcade in March. An accompanying Capcom press release was more vague and instead claimed that the title was due for release in "early 2006." It seems neither one was correct.A June 10th release was most recently rumored, but that has since been crushed by the Capcom PR machine and replaced with a friendly notice that reads: We'll tell you about it "sometime in the near future." It's hard not to be amused by this situation, especially given the deadly efficiency at which Capcom has released Street Fighter II games in the past few years. You'd think it would be second nature to append Hyper Fighting, a game that's already been made, to a list that includes Street Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter II Special Champion Edition, Street Fighter II The World Warrior, Street Fighter II The New Challengers, Street Fighter II Anniversary Edition and Street Fighter II Ultra Supreme College 2K6 For The Win Alpha Championship: Fourth Beating. This isn't the first time the series has gone online either, so the explanation that poor net code is holding them back doesn't seem entirely effective. Perhaps the thing that's more frustrating than waiting so long for a classic game to be emulated on a $400 console (dubious d-pad and all) is the lack of information regarding a release date. Or worse yet, what about the price?

There's a pretty good chance that Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting is gonna drop on Xbox Live Arcade next week. So now's the time to get ourselves worked up into a froth. Gamespot got their lucky "hands on" an early copy of the guaranteed hit and concluded: "From the look of things, Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting is shaping up to be just what fans want. The visuals look promising, the control is basically solid, and the breakdown of achievements for it are good, too. The only stumbling block we've noticed has been the game's performance, which we expect to be improved."Feature I'm most looking forward to: quarter matches (pictured). Gamespot says the highly anticipated Xbox Live Arcade port of Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting will be released the week of February 26th. There is no specific date listed (Q1 2006) and Peter Moore did say to expect it by March, so is this just a simple guess? If it's supposed to be out before March, and games are never early, then it will probably be released in the last week of February. The logic isn't bad, but I'd still take this with a grain of salt. The latest and greatest Internet meme to permeate, however briefly, our culture is chucknorrisfacts.com, an assembly of ridiculous "facts" compiled from the SomethingAwful forums about our favorite roundhouse kicking karate man. Our personal favorite: Chuck Norris originally appeared in the "Street Fighter II" video game, but was removed by Beta Testers because every button caused him to do a roundhouse kick. When asked bout this "glitch," Norris replied, "That's no glitch." This I was not aware of. Perhaps he'll be put back into the XBLA version!
