It's that time of the year again when you can't help but empty your wallet to stockpile on Steam games you'll probably never touch. Steam has launched its Summer Sale event for 2019, and it'll last for the next two weeks until July 7th 10AM PDT/1PM EDT. You know the drill: Steam sales offer the PC games available on its platform at very, very low prices -- sometimes, the prices are even far too low and the games far too many for your poor bank account. This year, the most notable games on sale include Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Skyrim and Resident Evil 2 remake.

  • Get WoW on the cheap during Blizzard's Summer Sale

We're well into the cheerfully vacation-filled days of summer, which means it's the perfect time to stay indoors and play World of Warcraft... right? Well, if the Steam Summer Sale hasn't already attacked your wallet, Blizzard is getting in on the game with reduced-price copies of World of Warcraft and Mists of Pandaria. European gamers can pick up WoW for €7.50 of Mists for €10.00, while North American and Australian gamers can pick up WoW for $10.00 and Mists for $10.00. This isn't the best pricing we've seen -- Blizzard's sale over the past holiday season brought WoW down to a very budget-friendly price of €5/$4.99 -- but the €7.50/$10 pricetag still isn't a bad way to pick up a Recruit a Friend mount. And if you don't have any friends who don't already play, you can always just recruit yourself for the same bonuses. Whee, new mounts!

These deals run through August 18, as does an existing deal that nets the customer any new game for $10 or less with the trade-in of two eligible games. • The Secret World at half price on Steam

    by

    07.16.2013

The Steam Summer Sale is a hard time for any gamer to save money. There was a time when MMOs were at least somewhat safe, since a discounted MMO still requires the full subscription price. But right now The Secret World is on sale for half price, and those of you who have followed the game for a while know that this is a buy-to-play title. Once you've purchased this game, you can play for free forever. Need a little time to think this over? That's understandable. The sale is running for 48 hours (well, 47 hours as of this writing), so you don't have to decide right now. But if you've been waiting for a chance to get into this modern horror and conspiracy game, $15 isn't a bad price to start in. And the game did just get a secret agent-themed update, if that floats your boat. [Thanks to Zach for the tip!]

  • Psychology of the Steam Summer Sale

    by

    07.15.2013

We all recognize the phenomenon inflicted by the Steam sale, which leaves us with heaps of unplayed games cluttering our libraries. That's just what Steam sales do to people, right? But why? The Psychology of Video Games is run by Jamie Madigan, who holds a Ph.D in psychology and is a lifelong fan of gaming, and he recently outlined The Psychology Behind Steam's Summer Sale. New to the 2013 Summer Sale are Steam Trading Cards, which Madigan says nag at your inherent need to complete things you've started – a progress bar shows how much more you need to spend to get a random card, and this taps into a bias toward completion. Steam adds another layer after that with the Summer Getaway badge, which is crafted by collecting 10 of these cards. Additionally, Steam has perfected the facade of a random reward schedule, something that keeps you coming back at regular intervals, hoping to see a good game in the Daily Deals, or in the eight-hour Flash Sales, or the Community Choice games. People respond to random rewards, such as good games, and even though Valve probably has its sale games strategically planned out ahead of time, they seem random to the audience, Madigan argues. Steam also works the artificial scarcity angle, offering game sales for a limited time and heightening the chances you'll get it now, before the deal is lost, Madigan says. Just as people value diamonds and panda bears because they're relatively rare, you're more likely to spend more, more often, on things that have "limited availability." Madigan offers five psychological tricks that Steam seems to be employing on The Psychology of Video Games.

Steam is the undisputed ruler of digital game distribution for gamers on Windows PCs as well as Macs. While only a portion of the games on the service's virtual store shelves are Mac-compatible, seeing those titles get huge discounts is always worth celebrating. And celebrate we shall, as Steam has launched its annual summer sale, cutting the prices on many of the service's most popular titles. The sale lasts from today through July 22, with new deals revealed every day. On top of that, a "Flash Sales" section will showcase new deals every eight hours for the entirety of the event. For Mac-equipped gamers, you can currently save anywhere from 20 to 75 percent on titles like Don't Starve, Left 4 Dead 2 and Counter Strike: Global Offensive. Get you wallets ready.

It's pretty clear Best Buy knows exactly what it's doing with this giant game sale: It's the Monday following the final hours of the Steam Summer Sale, and many gamers are already suffering from the first stages of withdrawal. They crave cheap games, marked down to ridiculous prices with the flimsy excuse of "it's hot outside."The Best Buy Summer Gaming Blowout offers more than 100 games and accessories on sale this week, including console versions of Assassin's Creed Revelations, Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Just Dance 3 for $10 each, Gears of War 3 for $15, Metroid: Other M for $5, and many more massive discounts.Best Buy doesn't offer a ton of PC games, but does have Sid Meier's Civilization V: Game of the Year Edition for $20, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for $10, and a few new Sims titles on the cheap. For those itchin' for a post-Steam-sale fix, this might just be your Best Bet. [Thanks, Turtle Bird.]

Valve has remained mum on the topic of a 2012 summer sale, but the Open SteamWorks CDR database has uncovered a list of bundles, mostly for indie titles, apparently set for the sale in Steam's backend. Reddit user Dweezy gathered a list of the bundles, broken down over an 11-day period, along with a few other standalone collections.Titles include Cave Story+, Botanicula, Splice, Braid, Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, A Valley Without Wind, Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP, Qube, Jamestown, Bit.Trip Runner and Beat, and Waveform. Other bundles, indie or otherwise, include Batman (Asylum, City and Impostors), the BioShock franchise, a Civilization collection, Saints Row: The Third franchise pack, Square Hit Collection and a THQ collection. These oodles of bundles have no release date nor price and are unconfirmed by Valve, but this could be a taste of the sweet summer sale to come. Check the entire list after the break, and put that ice pick down.

Our wallets sighed in relief after finding out about a Play-Asia sale, and then ran away screaming once they realized that we were now tempted to import the entire store. If you import games as well, now's an opportune time at the online retailer, and if you don't, there's no better time to start. Play-Asia is currently having its annual Summer Sale, which started today and ends on July 20th. This means that every in-stock item is 25% off -- beautiful. Even after just one day of sales, many coveted items have already gone out of stock. There's still a lot to be had, though, so make sure not to put your importing off for too long.[Via Gemaga]
