Sunday Morning Funnies is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics. We're taking a break this week from our recent spotlight series, and focusing on good ol' fashioned comic news. So here's what's new: Guilded Age's Kickstarter fund is going swimmingly! Volume 2 (in hard copy) of the comic has been funded, as well as at least one animation. Check out their "achievement" card to see a celebratory comic that also shows the stretch goals, or head over to Kickstarter to check out the rewards on offer and possibly contribute. Also in Kickstarter news, Blind Ferret and Paladin Studios (an indie game developer) are working to fund an LFG-themed four-player co-op video game. There are tons of cool stretch goals and prizes. They have quite a way to go yet, but you can still donate until July 19! And fans of DLC might notice the special LFG-related comic on the list this week... but I won't spoil the surprise. Check it out yourself!

Sunday Morning Funnies is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics. Each week, we've been featuring a regularly updating WoW-related web comic from our list. Today, we're shining the spotlight on From Draenor With Love: From Draenor With Love is created by Stacey, a freelance artist and illustrator, and Mike, a journalist and graphic designer. Stacey also runs a blog called Manalicious, and does character commissions. This comic is fairly accessible to new readers. The jokes are often about experiences that casual and "hardcore" players share alike. There is also usually a good discussion below the comic, which is enjoyable if you "got it" and informative if you didn't! Two of the main characters are Vidyala (a multi-lingual draenei who digs explosions and the Light) and Rades, an orc. The two bonded over their mutual love for goggles and "interest in how things tick and general mayhem." There are other characters, too, but you'll have to read the comic to meet them! You can read more about Stacey and Mike on the comic's About page, or more about Vidyala and Rades on the Characters page. From Draenor With Love updates Wednesdays.

Sunday Morning Funnies is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics. Each week, in addition to bringing you the latest in comic-goodness, SMF is featuring a regularly updating WoW-related web comic. Check out The Daily Blink: The Daily Blink is a WoW-related web comic by Chris Hanel. It consists of funny, one-off jokes about Blizzard, the in-game experience, the developers, classes, characters, and the like. It experiments with a variety of styles; for example, there are mock magazine covers, meme parodies, and staged in-game situations. The subject matter is often topical, riffing off of the latest news or the popular complaints du jour. Hanel uses WoW Model Viewer, Machinima Studio and Photoshop to create the comic. The Daily Blink updates on Wednesdays.

Sunday Morning Funnies is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics. Each week, we're shining the spotlight on a WoW-related web comic from our weekly list. This week, we're looking at Dark Legacy Comics: Dark Legacy Comics (DLC) is a funny comic featuring a group of 8 Alliance-based regular characters: Keydar, Donald, Miji, Gigz, Narya, Krom and Nyte, as well as the two little clones, pictured above. Many of its comics are one-offs, which makes it very accessible for new or casual readers, but it also features running story lines from time to time. The subjects vary. Sometimes there are long story lines where something unique happens in the world (like an NPC strike). Other times, the comics focus on a character's hobby (like Gigz's cooking) or even comment back on the experience of playing WoW, such as with a sequence where the characters are raiding. DLC is one of the longest running and most popular WoW-related comics, and is a great pick if you're new to either WoW or web comics. DLC updates on Sundays.

Sunday Morning Funnies is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics. Every week, we're profiling a different WoW-related web comic. This week, we're taking a look at Looking for Group (LFG): Looking for Group is, unlike many of the other comics, not just a (time-consuming and awesome) hobby. In fact, it has a whole team behind it. A team including personnel with titles like "logistics manager" and "communications director." They are part of the Blind Ferret network. LFG was launched in November of 2006 and has grown to be very popular. It is a fantasy-themed comic that is loosely based on WoW; however, it's very accessible to non-WoW players. It "follows the adventures of Cale'Anon and Richard, as well as their companions." It's story-based but also humorous. The warlock Richard is the primary source of comedy as well as the entry point for readers who don't usually enjoy comics heavy on story. Looking for Group is Canadian. It's written by Ryan Sohmer and drawn by Lar DeSouza. You can read a bit more about them and the rest of the team on their About page. Looking for Group updates Mondays and Thursdays.

Sunday Morning Funnies is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics. Each week, SMF is placing a regularly updating WoW-related web comic under a spotlight. This week's feature is Gratz: Gratz is a humorous comic by Lackinganame (Jason Nebeker). It is a relatively new comic, and family-friendly. It's fun and a great one to check out each week if you enjoy watching an artist evolve. It began as a few character sketches and evolved into a full story-based comic. It features five main characters: Vancore (a leader, hero), Starfire (gifted, insightful druid), Red and Green (brothers; jokers, trouble-makers), and Gorak (wise, grandfather-figure, trainer, aging leader). Gratz Genesis was written from 2009-2011 but not published until 2012, when the artist was able to devote more time to the comic. This is also when Gratz Transition was born, which not only features the characters as older, but also an updated art style. Gratz updates Mondays, usually with 3-4 pages (and sometimes more!).

    05.05.2013

Sunday Morning Funnies is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics. Every week, SMF is shining the spotlight on one of our weekly WoW-related, regularly updating web comics. This week, we're looking at Teh Gladiators: Teh Gladiators is written by Uros Jojic and drawn by Borislav Grabovic, both Serbian. They describe it as "a labor of love." Jojic is a player and fan as well as novice writer; Grabovic "is an accomplished artist," and it shows. It is primarily a story-based comic. Originally, it was a story about arena but has since evolved into "a more free-flowing story about the adventures of three principal characters." Gorrok (the aging warrior), Spin (Tauren) and Vallant (a hunter with two rats) are the stars of the show. Since the change, it has been less gag-based and moves at a slower pace. In order to keep it moving, the pair started posting two weekly updates. Teh Gladiators updates every Sunday Wednesday with two comics.

    04.28.2013

Sunday Morning Funnies is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics. Each week on SMF, we're highlighting a regularly updating comic from our list. This week, we're focusing on Guilded Age: Guilded Age is inspired by WoW, and much more loosely based on Azeroth than most of the other comics on the list. It is written by T. Campbell and Phil Kahn and illustrated by John and Jason Waltrip. It is heavily story-based and features beautiful artwork. It takes place on the continent of Arkerra. The Kingdom of Gastonia and the World's Rebellion (dubbed "The Savage Races") are at war. Gastonia hires a select group of adventurers (the "Peace-Makers") for diplomatic and reconnaissance missions, as well as criminal investigations. Meanwhile, on Earth, a man is CEO of a major corporation. He devotes himself to working on a virtual world that he insists is real; he claims to have bridged Earth and another realm. Read all about the characters or learn more about the crew behind the scenes. Guilded Age updates every weekday.

Sunday Morning Funnies is your weekly list of WoW-related web comics. Each week, Sunday Morning Funnies is spotlighting a regularly updating comic based on or inspired by WoW. This week's feature is What's Shakin': What's Shakin' is a comic that chronicles "the epic adventures of Coffinshaker and friends." It is based on the original characters from Coffin Comics, which is now about a variety of video games and other topics. While it is inspired by WoW, it is an original story set in its own world. Shawn Tommelleo, the creator, describes it as "fantasy drama with a splash of humor." Coffinshaker is the "fun and lovable fire mage" with a big imagination. He's quiet, a touch odd, and really doesn't have much hair. Ell is the "smokin'" hot healer of the group who specializes in defensive magic. Nith is a holy battlemage and trouble-maker, while Pai is a summoner (complete with guardian spirit, Berry, who – alas – can't use magic). What's Shakin' updates Mondays.

  • All the World's a Stage: We don't need no narration

    by
    David Bowers

All the World's a Stage, and all the orcs and humans merely players. They have their stories and their characters; and one player in his time plays many roles. Throughout my career as a roleplaying columnist on WoW.com, I've been talking about roleplaying as a way to tell stories, but last week a comment by Zombie, as well as those made by a few others on the same topic, caused me to think about roleplay stories in a new way. Perhaps what we roleplayers do isn't actually storytelling so much as it is character development through interesting and somewhat disjointed anecdotes. There's really no beginning, middle, or end to a roleplayed character in WoW. Instead, what you get is a mishmash of events and experiences, which you may then string together into a story in your mind if you like. But even if you don't, you can see that most of us don't really expect for a narrative to develop from a clear beginning, through various plot developments, and finally lead into an exciting climax. There is something else roleplayers want to get out of their experience, even if many of us have trouble articulating exactly what it is.

  • Blizzard legal censures Shakes and Fidget

    by
    Mike Schramm

    05.11.2009

First the legal crackdown on fan-made iPhone apps, and now this: German-based webcomic Shakes and Fidget, a longtime sight in our Sunday Morning Funnies column, has apparently been smacked with a cease-and-desist by Blizzard. Our German isn't that great (and we've reached out to the comic's creators for further comment), but a translation of this forum page tells us that Activision-Blizzard's legal department suggested to them that there was enough similarity between the official game and the unofficial comic to cause a problem, and while they believe that they're covered under parody laws, they decided to take the "offending" comics offline anyway, and are apparently currently working on editing them so that they can be put back up without any issues.Obviously, since the comics are offline, we have no idea what material Blizzard objected to -- you could argue that depictions of certain gear created by Blizzard artists in the game or specific names are under trademark and thus could be protected under copyright law. But even then, Shakes and Fidget is one of many, many fan-made webcomics to obviously depict World of Warcraft and Blizzard-designed items specific to the game, and we haven't yet heard of any other webcomics that have been approached in this way.Still, as they might say in Germany, wir riechen eine ratte. Without knowing the exact nature of the comics that Blizzard had an issue with, this seems like a complete overreach on their part, especially considering that it's some of their biggest fans who are making these comics, and that many artists have portrayed many videogames in webcomics without anyone confusing the issue of whether they were official or not. We'll keep an eye out for more information (and we've also contacted Blizzard for comment) -- if you know of any other webcomics or fan artists who've been approached by Blizzard in this way, definitely let us know. Thanks, Henry!

Happy Mother's Day to all you WoW Moms, and for all you kids who might have forgotten, you'd better go say it now while you've just been reminded. Come back though, because I have a nice list of comics waiting, as well as a (mostly) friendly gnome controversy. Awkward Zombie: Deadfall. I laughed out loud. Cru the Dwarf is being pursued, and an interrogation is underway. Dark Legacy Comics: Under the World. Experience Points: He's falling in love, and starting to enjoy the fishing dailies. Flintlocke vs the Horde: A Plan for Vengeance, part 2. GU Comics: It Still Figures. Fancy a little gnome controversy? If you're confused, click back a comic, or check out last week's Sunday Morning Funnies and read through some of the comments. Check out the latest from LFG. NoObz: Dayz of our Lives. Check out the latest from Teh Gladiators. Two Lumps: The Adventures of Ebenezer and Snooch. Snooch is playing WoW, in his own way. NPC: Puppyslayer. World of Warcraft, eh? is back, after a three-week hiatus!

This week's set of comics is actually quite topical, from a recent scandal, to world news to proper feline nutrition. There also aren't as many Noblegarden-themed comics as I expected. Cru the Dwarf is making fire. Nifty things are afoot! Experience Points examines the latest content patch. Flintlocke vs the Horde: War Party part 11. GU Comics: It Figures. This is related to a recent story that we covered involving hacked accounts, a GM item, and some very naughty players. Read all about the Martin Fury Scandal, and then tell us what you thought in our polls. GU Comics also hosted a guest strip by Stormhaven, called Inconsistent Know-How. Don't forget to read the explanation underneath! Before I did, I thought it was about the fact that Mustard Dogs seems to never come up. I have stacks and stacks of the Rhino Dogs, but no dice. GU Comics also posted a comic about last week's Noblegarden festivities, Rabbits Everywhere. This is the second-latest LFG comic, but I thought that it stood better on its own than #248. NoObz: Useless. NPC: For the Taurine! I love this one. If you don't know what Taurine is, you don't love your cats enough. Yep, I said it. Check out the latest from Teh Gladiators. The Adventures of Disgraph T. Dwarf has updated, and I have to agree, I Love the Smell of Bacon in the Morning. Here is another from It's a 2v2 Life. Here's a newbie: KUO, with Eyebeam Irony. I couldn't decide which one to list, so check out a few of them, and I'll go with the latest next week.

This week, we have a couple of comics that haven't updated because the authors are otherwise occupied. Namely, these are The Adventures of Disgraph T Dwarf and World of Warcraft, eh?. Enjoy your hiatus, Cadychan, and good luck with your story D (I can call you that, y'see, we're tight or something. Plus, you won't know if I'm really calling you Dan, Disgraph, or "Dwarf", which is slightly better than "You" but not quite as polite as "You there!", and I do like to antagonize Dwarves!). Awkward Zombie: Horse Remorse. I love the comment underneath! Cru the Dwarf is back up and running! Experience Points: Vincent gets a Mammoth, and reminisces about the old days. Check out the latest from Flintlocke vs. the Horde. GU Comics: A Touch Obvious. I highly recommend reading the story underneath it (as I always do, really). Check out the latest from LFG. My only complaint is the absence of the bunny. Usually he can be seen idling in the background, at least! Manic Graffiti: My Money's on an EU Guild. Massive Pwnage: Level Requirements. NoObz: Overcheatage. I think everyone knows how this feels. NPC: Diversion Tactics. My cats do something like this too, although I think they might just be gunning for my chair. Teh Gladiators: The Man's a Manimal.

I hope everyone is enjoying their holiday weekend! I have a nice list to help you kick-start your day. Unfortunately, it seems that Cru the Dwarf will not be updating this week, due to technical difficulties. The featured photo is not of his computer, but it seems he will need a new one before the comic can resume. In the meantime, you can donate, or express your overwhelming sorrow! Dark Legacy Comics: Common Descent. Experience Points: Murlocs vs. Fries. Extra Life: It's all made of ones and zeros. Flintlocke vs the Horde: War Party part 2. Shakes and Fidget: Practice Makes Perfect. Check out the latest from LFG. Wolfslatoxx from NoObz. I love that little robotic dude. NPC: Purple Death Puddles. Teh Gladiators: Double Trouble. The Adventures of Disgraph T. Dwarf: Standing Out. World of Warcraft, eh? It's like, totally In the Nick of Time.
