  • Rumor: Nintendo still hurt about RE4, reason why Capcom doesn't have a Brawler

There's a rumor floating around that the lack of a playable character from Camp Capcom is due to a little game by the name of Resident Evil 4. You see, before it ended up on the PC and PS2, along with the Wii, it was meant to be entirely a GameCube exclusive. That didn't last that long, however. With the inclusion of Sega's Sonic and Solid Snake from the Metal Gear Solid line of games, the inclusion of one of Capcom's characters (oh, let's say ... Mega Man) quite possibly would've been too much for this blogger's weak little heart. The rest of the world, however, probably would've liked to see one of Capcom's characters make it into the already overstuffed line-up of playable brawlers. What Capcom character would you have liked to see in Brawl?

  • Just blow: Smash Bros Brawl disc problems blamed on dust

Though many of Japan's Wii owners may now be in possession of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, not all of them can necessarily play it. IGN reports that a number of users are reporting that the Brawl discs will not run properly on their consoles, a problem which actually stems from dirt build-up in the Wii itself.Brawl is uniquely affected by this problem due to the game's size, which makes it the first title on the Wii to be pressed on a dual-layer DVD. The special disc requires a more fine-tuned read from the optical sensor, which is causing problems in systems clogged with dirt and tobacco smoke. Rather than suggesting they "blow," Nintendo has set up a cleaning service for players affected. Japanese owners who send their Wii consoles, copies of Brawl and warranty cards to a service center in Kyoto will have their systems repaired within one week, and Nintendo will cover all cleaning and shipping costs. While we're happy Nintendo is taking responsibility for the problem, we're also personally hoping that those affected kept their consoles in squalid conditions. If even small amounts of dust can affect the playability of the Brawl discs, then we're looking at a lot of impatient, unhappy customers in the States come March 9th.[Via Eurogamer]

  • Rumor: Resident Evil 4 to blame for no Capcom in Brawl

Before the deluge of Super Smash Bros. Brawl information following the Japanese release, we were still all hoping to see Mega Man, Leon Kennedy, or maybe even Ryu appear in the game's sizable roster. Now that the dust has cleared, with no Capcom characters in sight, the only question left to ask is: why?Kotaku has reportedly spoken with insider sources at Nintendo, who claim that the lost exclusivity of Resident Evil 4 caused Nintendo to reconsider the inclusion of Capcom characters in Brawl. RE4 was originally meant to be exclusive to the Gamecube, but concerns over sales led Capcom to release the title on PS2, and later on PC, with additional content. While Nintendo has the right to be peeved about the broken exclusivity agreement, the addition of Capcom's franchises to the Brawl lineup could have only benefited Nintendo, and created more hype for the title (if that's even possible). While we're a bit unsure whether to buy into this rumor, if true then we can only hope that Capcom and Nintendo kiss and make up in time to offer some new characters as downloadable content (hey, we can dream, can't we?).Update: Slight factual error corrected; Capcom announced the PS2 version prior to the release of the Gamecube version. If there's one thing we learned reading through some of the comments on our mega-spoiler Smash Bros. Brawl post, it's that there are a lot of people who want Mega Man to join in the Smash Bros. series. If there's a second thing we learned, it's that people are very interested in learning the secretive "Final Smash" attacks for each of the revealed characters.Well, we can't help with Mega Man, but thanks to the kindly folks over at GameVideos, we can help with that second problem. The epic eight-minute video below shows off every Final Smash move in sequence. Not all Final Smashes are created equal, though, so we've decided to rank them on a ten point scale based on destructive potential, how well they fit the character and all-around coolness. Don't agree with us? Take it to the comments, Jabroni.Warning: Major spoilers contained below the break.

  • Rumor: Smash Bros. Brawl sells 500K on first day in Japan

Already this week we've run leaked trailers, information and gameplay videos of Super Smash Bros. Brawl ... so why not add leaked sales numbers to that list? Cubed3 has a translation of a Japanese blog post referencing a purportedly leaked Famitsu sales report that says the highly-anticipated game sold 500,000 copies, or 80 percent of available stock, on its first day of Japanese release. The sourcing is admittedly not very concrete, but the number does seem plausible given reports of retail shortages and the game's strong showing on the Amazon Japan charts. Then again, Super Mario Galaxy only sold 250,000 copies (edit: fixed typo) in it's entire first week of release, and that was during the highly-charged holiday season. Has Smash Bros. Brawl shattered Japanese sales expectations, or is something getting lost in translation here? You'll know as soon as we do.

This was the scene yesterday outside the Yodobashi Camera in Shinjuku, as over 300 people suddenly decided to all go to the electronics retailer at the same time for ... some reason. It was a good day for Yodobashi (in terms of business, not of employee sanity) as a PS2 Haruhi game, Devil May Cry 4 and various other things also hit. But the true "event" game was Brawl, which led to many Wii system sales and probably the most GameCube controller sales in the last five years. With ownership of the game, of course, comes detailed writeups. Justin Epperson is writing about every aspect of the game for 1UP as he experiences it. He says of the Subspace Emissary single-player adventure that "At the rate we were playing, one hour of play time is around 10% completion." That's ... much bigger than the Melee adventure mode! In sadder news, he says that rule sets can only be edited when playing online with friends, and not with strangers. If you're hooked on the (Smash) Brothers, go read the article for lots of talk about stages, unlocks, stickers, and all the stuff that just seems cruel until we can play it.

  • Smash Bros. Brawl shortages imminent

Japan is poised to suffer significant Super Smash Bros. Brawl shortages when the game is officially released on Thursday, reports Game|Life. Nintendo has failed to supply as much as 75% of pre-order units to retailers; likely due to production delays and oversights. Though the shortage would seem to pale in comparison to Wii hardware scarcity, a meager Brawl launch would underscore Nintendo's continued struggle to operate a functional supply chain.Game|Life theorizes that Japan's expected shortages explain Brawl's delay in North America, as it will take until March for Nintendo to manufacture an ample shipment of units for the territory – not to mention, fulfill the rest of Japan's demand. Others speculate that Nintendo is intentionally withholding supply to give its WiFi Connection service a chance to adapt to the inescapable surge of online Brawl players. This isn't the first time Nintendo has been accused of such tactics, and – if someone don't fix that damn supply chain – it won't be the last.

We know that the wait for the new Smash Bros. game was recently extended, and we're not sure if the collection of videos we have for you to enjoy is going to make things better or worse. But, the news waits for no man (or woman), so we feel that we must pass them along. You want an Assist Trophy montage? It's above. You want some sticker gameplay? Oh, we've got that. It's after the jump. You want a trophy collection montage? Wait, let us see if it's in stock. Yes, it totally is. Wait, you want Smash Ball gameplay? Well, this is our last one, let us check with our manager. ... OK, he said that it's yours, but he doesn't want to be held liable if your face melts off, Raiders-style. Check out the whole collection after the jump.

  • Will Brawl fall to the Wii's casual focus?

    01.27.2008

An interesting opinion piece by JC Barnett popped up on GameSetWatch yesterday, which covered the familiar area of the general lack of success of "hardcore" games on the Wii, specifically in Japan. Barnett's prime example is No More Heroes, which, despite being hyped like crazy (and also despite being really awesome) totally bombed. A "punk rock game" from Suda 51 isn't really prime hit material, being somewhat niche by design, but Barnett uses this as an example of a game that doesn't fit with the Wii audience. He then wonders out loud if Super Smash Bros. Brawl will actually sell as well as we all think it will. "It is hardcore, but it is popular hardcore. But is it a fit for the Wii audience? My guess is: not so much." He expects a fairly strong first month with a large drop-off, much like Super Mario Galaxy. In other words, it'll sell well, but not as well as a DS game about petting a dog. We've heard a lot of talk about the Wii's casual-focused audience, but this is the first time somebody has questioned the sales potential of Smash Bros. It should be pretty interesting to see how the first month plays out in Japan.

  • Rumorang: The 'final' Smash Bros. Brawl roster

    01.25.2008

Rumors of the final Smash Bros. roster (past the 25 officially announced characters) are nothing new, but with the game's Japanese release nearing, such rumors seem to be reaching a fever pitch. The latest fuel for the fire is the above picture, which purports to show a final roster of 44 characters from the Japanese version of the game. The screen has been floated on a number of sites with varying degrees of credulity -- it was even included at the beginning of a very official-looking GameTrailers video introducing moves for three of the confirmed new characters in the game.So is this the holy grail of Brawl information? As much as we'd like to believe it so, we just can't. For one thing, the background seems to be taken directly from this official image of a much smaller select screen. Everything matches a little too perfectly, from the transparent background image to the floating cursor in the bottom left corner. For another thing, the images many of the "newly revealed" characters are 2D drawings that don't match up well with the 3D renderings for the officially revealed characters. Even for those that are renders, a closely matching source image can usually be found with a quick Google image search, suggesting an overzealous photoshopper.Still, we'd be more than happy to be wrong on this one and to be able to play with this impressive list of Nintendo favorites come March 9. For those who want to cover their ears and hold out a shred of hope, check out a full list of the supposedly "revealed" characters below the jump.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in, whether they believed it or not]

Even though the actual release date for Super Smash Bros. Brawl continues to slip, we know that it will get here soon. Until then, we're perfectly content to watch a video like this and practice our sighs. With five minutes of gameplay in this video, we're able to get a lot of practice-losing in.We already know that we have no chance against the legions of Smash-obsessed teens who will be online day and night, so we're going to try to be the best at being totally dejected about our losses. We plan to mix it up with a little bit of upbeat winner-congratulating, and maybe some angry tantrums, but as far as strategy goes, our bread and butter will be the good old sigh of resignation.

We, much like our friends at Nintendo Wii Fanboy, don't have a lot of substantiation for this rumor, but we thought we'd pass it along anyway: Nintendo Power has been speculating that Super Smash Bros. will arrive on the Wii's Virtual Console alongside Super Smash Bros. Brawl's March 9 release date. Similar timing was used for Metroid and Super Mario Bros. 3 with Metroid Prime 3 and Super Mario Galaxy respectively. We understand those tie-ins, each of the new games are markedly different from their predecessors, but we have a hard time believing we'll be enjoying Brawl in March and wish that we could play a shittier version. But hey, maybe that's just us.

Courtesy of a new Japanese video for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, we get confirmation that Ness of Earthbound fame will be making his way back into Brawl. Not only that, but popular character Jigglypuff from Pokemon will be making a return to the field of combat as well. Oh, and the fun doesn't stop there as Lucario, from Pokemon Diamond & Pearl, also gets confirmed as a playable character. We just hope that the inclusion of Lucario doesn't mean that Mewtwo is getting the axe.Head past the break for another screen cap from the video confirming Ness is in the game.%Gallery-10206%

A small slip-up on the Nintendo of Japan website has revealed three previously unannounced characters in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Fan favorites Ness and Jigglypuff will be returning from the previous Smash Bros. titles, while the pokémon Lucario will also be joining the ever-growing ranks.Nintendo of Japan recently posted a 5-minute video explaining the many features of Brawl. In one section of the video, the sticker-collecting feature is shown off. A small set of icons along the bottom shows which character can equip each sticker, and originally showed small icons depicting Ness, Jigglypuff, and Lucario.Nintendo of Japan has since updated the video, conspicuously whiting out these icons and effectively assuring us that this is "for real." More than simply confirming new characters, this news also confirms that the Brawl roster will exceed those characters announced on the official blog, which is just good news for everybody. Check out the original, unedited footage after the break. The icons appear very briefly around 4:20.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

  • Video introduces the new Smash Bros. Brawl fighters

With the slow information leak coming out of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, we fear that the effect may have been something akin to Chinese water torture for the staff. A few of us (who shall remain unnamed) have taken to cosplaying different characters from the game, either by wearing elaborate character costumes, or, in some of the more desperate cases, just shouting their names repeatedly. The worst part is that some of our now mentally unstable staff can't even remember what fighters are in the game anymore. We're sure that we've seen a Wu-Tang Clan costume or two, and at least one of our staff has taken to dressing as Chun Li. Thankfully, GameTrailers has put together this video profiling some of the new fighters from the game to help us keep them straight. It pulled us back from the edge, we hope it does the same for you.

Gamers concerned that their favorite gender-confused Zelda alter-ego would be absent from Brawl have absolutely nothing to worry about. The Hyrulian princess's down-special move will still transform her into Sheik, now re-imagined to match the visual style of Twilight Princess.According to the official Smash Bros. Brawl blog, Sheik's look is based on an early design drafted during development of Twilight Princess, meaning that at one point Sheik was a shoe-in for Link's grittiest adventure to date. Sheik appears to retain the needle storm, chain, and vanishing moves from Melee, and shares the "Light Arrow" Final Smash with Zelda.

  • Awkward Brawl postmortem, Wii Fit panel announced for GDC

    01.15.2008

Nintendo has announced that they will hold three panel discussions at this year's Game Developers' Conference. Two of the three focus on the biggest, and most ephemeral, Wii releases of the year: Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Wii Fit. In "Building Characters: The Super Smash Bros. Brawl Postmortem," Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai will discuss the challenges of throwing so many distinct Nintendo characters into a game together, staying true to both the game design and the integrity of the original characters. This postmortem will be extremely uncomfortable if the game isn't actually, you know, mortem yet, a possibility that seems ever more likely. In fact, Brawl will not be out by the time GDC opens on February 18th, but it could still be finished if they meet their January 31st release date for Japan. "Wii Fit: Creating a Brand New Interface for the Home Console," led by EAD general manager Takao Sawano will discuss the development of both Wii Fit and the weird controller that goes with it. And Takashi Aoyama's "Planning the Wii Menu: From Pre-Launch to WiiWare" is about ... the Wii Menu. Well, and also the development of the Wii's internal programming.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl just wasn't done breaking hearts. After the crushing disappointment of having our $19.98 preorders canceled, Nintendo's latest news is a kick while we're down. And not a fun in-game kick, from Yoshi or something. The regular kind. The rumors were true. Nintendo of America has announced that Brawl is delayed until March 9th. The official reason? "Development is taking slightly longer than expected." We're just going to assume that the real reason is that Nintendo's taking the time to add (character you want). The Japanese release has been delayed, as well, until the 31st of this month. Masahiro Sakurai has apologized for the delay on the Dojo site. For those of you who are counting, this is the second delay for this game. Once upon a time, we thought we were going to be Brawling online as soon as December 3rd. It's now ... considerably later than that, is what it is.[Via Joystiq]
