  • Netflix launches in Canada today: streaming only service for C$7.99 per month

As expected, Netflix has kicked off its first offering outside the United States by opening up a Watch Instantly portal for Canadians this morning at Netflix.ca. With no discs available at all, the only option is a $7.99 Canadian ($7.80 US) plan for streaming that works on PCs, PS3, Wii, iOS family and many other devices -- interestingly the Xbox 360, Samsung TVs, and Blu-ray players from VIZIO or Insignia are off the compatible list until later this fall. Content availability also seems to be different for our neighbors to the north (English only for now, French is on the way Quebec), with the Netflix blog specifically calling out Superbad and Mad Men as up for streaming, which aren't currently available on Watch Instantly in the US. Unlike our recent Caribana experience we weren't able to cross the border and check it out for ourselves, but owners of Maple Leaf-certified IPs are invited to check out the selection (one month free trials are available) and let us know exactly what we're missing -- more details including Canadian distributors and device availability are in the press release after the break.

Click for high-resolution image. What an eye-grabber. The upcoming God of War Entertainment Pack gives bloodthirsty players a brand new red PSP, a copy of Chains of Olympus, Syphon Filter: Combat Ops and the UMD movie Superbad -- all for $199. The problem? It won't be available until May.

  • Blu-ray once again rocks the niche market

Normally when we cover a story about Blu-ray, it comes with the whole "oh, it's outselling HD DVD 2:1" smack talk. However, we can't actually say that for the week ending December 9th. Instead, we can say "oh, it's outselling HD DVD 3:1" and crack a sly grin. How did Blu-ray wipe the floor with their high-definition competitor? It was the third Pirates of the Caribbean film -- Superbad helped out, too.The funny thing to remember is that while between high-definition formats, Blu-ray is cleaning up, it's still such a miniature slice of the retail movie pie. So, while we do get our kicks by touting these numbers every so often, it's sort of a hollow victory until the madness subsides and the world decides on a single format to ever so slowly replace regular DVDs. Until then, when Christmas rolls around, we expect a large portion of you to have a Disney-inspired pirate movie under your tree. Next week will prove interesting as the latest Harry Potter film releases on both formats -- place your bets![Thanks, AG23!]

After last week's less-than-stellar offering, we're back to more of the heavy hitters. This week features a couple movies just seeing their first releases and a classic that's sure to look wonderful on Blu-ray. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End Superbad: Unrated Extended Special Edition Elton 60: Live at Madison Square Garden Queen Rock Montreal & Live Aid Mr. & Mrs. Smith Cast Away 20 Million Miles to Earth While we'll kindly pass on seeing Elton John in hi-definition, we're huge fans of anything Judd Apatow touches, so Superbad is a must buy. And despite watching Cast Away at least a dozen times, we'll happily pick it up to see one of Tom Hanks' best performances ever.
