Well, that was fast. That recent update that wouldn't allow users to install the Homebrew Channel? It's been bested, as the Homebrew Channel beta9 has been released. Among working with the latest update, beta9 also brings the following fixes to the table: Installer / updater now works with the October 23 update SDHC support REALLY fixed the memcard bug Installer now picks newest sane IOS, fixes some beta8 regressions Added a reload button (for SD card changes) Return to system menu skips warning Fixed some graphical glitches Saner XML load code Many fixes to underlying stuff in the newer libogc [Via /.] The homebrew community is doing nifty things with the Wii. Have you learned how to play DVDs on your console yet? Or read about the app that lets you play games from other regions? What about getting Goldeneye to run on Wii? Alternatively, you could just use homebrew to get your cheat on.

The NXE (New Xbox Experience) is the upcoming Xbox 360 dashboard update, first revealed to gamers at E3 2008. Designed to be usable and intuitive for everyone under your roof regardless of gaming cred, the NXE is a complete revamp of the Xbox 360 dash we know and love. Still on the fence about the new update? Xbox.com now sports an interactive preview of the New Xbox Experience the way it will be presented when it finally launches later this year. Also you should remember that Xbox Live will be down for 24-hours beginning at 12:01AM PT on September 29 to prepare for the service update -- meaning the new dashboard isn't going to be made available just yet.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

  • Did you just copy a Virtual Console game?

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/nintendo/Did_you_just_copy_a_Virtual_Console_game'; One person has apparently created a hack for the Wii, allowing for the transport of the Virtual Console games from one system to another. As you can see in the video above, the process does not look all too difficult, however there is room for discrepancy. The video was uploaded to YouTube by user dannyml, and merely says "Hacked The Virtual Console." And there is a noticeable lack of seeing the copied game run for us to be comfortable labeling this as believed. So excuse us while we go hang on a fence.[Thanks, craig!]

  • Wii Shop update makes way for Wii Ware [update]

Update: To clarify, the Wii Shop Channel update applies to Wiis in North America, as upon checking our own Shop Channel, we found the above screen. It just so happens a European stumbled upon it. As you all know, we're getting set to get Wii Ware up and running on our Wiis. Upon that beautiful day, in which we're sure the sun will shine through the clouds and engulf us all in warm rays of light, many Wii owners will be trying to duck and dodge all of that sunshine while downloading games through Wii Ware. Those of us in North America won't have to flee for our lives from the sun until May.But we digress. European Wii owners will likely find out (either through reading this or by checking their Wii) that the Wii Shop Channel requires an update. And with Wii Ware on the horizon, it's likely this update is in some way a part of that. Actually, forum-goers at NeoGAF report that Nintendo confirms it's in preparation for the launch of Wii Ware. Others even commented about a "guide-thing in the lower right corner of the shop."

  • 10.5.2 makes your WoW go faster

Our good friends over at WoW Insider (disclaimer: I'm a lead over there) have unlocked one of the first secrets about 10.5.2 (which dropped today in Software Update): it'll make World of Warcraft play faster. After hearing that the patch made reader Jason's Mac play faster, WoW Insider's Adam Holisky saw his FPS jump from 30 to 50 on his first-gen Intel iMac (he also has 2gb of RAM, and installed the graphics update with 10.5.2). The picture on the upper right was a test under 10.5.1, and on the lower right was after the update.Pretty slick. I'd imagine that this would probably affect most 3D games (although who knows how EA's games will work on the Mac at any given moment). The only note that might document this in the update itself is just a "general stability" fix for "third-party applications,' but if you see your 3D go faster after 10.5.2 let us know. Azeroth has never looked so good.

  • Ask PSP Fanboy: Volume 5

Every Saturday, PSP Fanboy will answer your burning questions. If you have a question for the team, send an e-mail to andrew @ pspfanboy.com with the subject "Ask PSP Fanboy."Q: I subscribed to "The 1UP Show" RSS feed and had it download overnight. When I go to it under videos it says "unsupported movie type" or something like that. It is a mp4 file and if I run it through PSP Video 9 it'll play. But I'd like to to play right off the bat. Any clue? I'm also having the same problems with "On the Spot" from gamespot.com. Also what are the restrictions on mp4 files for the PSP?A: The PSP has some peculiar restrictions with video playback. The two you should focus on are video resolution and bitrate. Videos are limited to a maximum of 76800 pixels (320x240, for example), and a video bitrate of 768kbps. You should make sure that videos that aren't named in Sony's proprietary Memory Stick format (MAQ, M4V) are placed in your Memory Stick under a folder called "VIDEO."Unfortunately, it appears that "The 1UP Show" is now encoded at a much higher resolution than the PSP is allowed to play back. You may want to download PSP-compatible files directly from The 1UP Show website.
