Mention 3D, and you'll get an enthusiastic shrug from most. Mention three little words in conjunction, and everything changes. In case you haven't guessed that magic trio, it's "no glasses required." We've seen the technology bandied about, but we're sensing that companies are about to get serious with it at CES 2009. Case in point: Alioscopy and TCL have tag-teamed in order to showcase the former's 3DHD autostereoscopic 3D LCD display (40-inch) and content creation technology in just under a month. There are no real details on the underlying juju, but you can bet we're stoked to see what it delivers in Vegas. Maybe those plans for a 3D Olympics in 2012 aren't all that loony after all?

  • TCL's iOpen-081A: no lipstick on this pig

We simply can't get enough of cheap, nasty, and niche Windows CE devices -- which is why the iOpen-081A is like music to our ears. Awesome music. This garish pile of plastic does just about everything you'd want a portable device to do, unless you need to do a lot of data entry (or any, since it doesn't have a keyboard of any sort). Still, the iOpen features a 480 x 272 touchscreen display, an ARM926 CPU, 2GB of flash storage, 64MB of SDRAM, 802.11b/g, GPS, SD and MMC card support, as well as a USB port for hooking up something like a keyboard or flash drive. As a media player, it seems to support all of the familiar formats (MP3, MP4, WMA, AVI), and we wouldn't be surprised if there were a few emulators hanging around on this bad boy. Hey, if you've got 2300 yuan (about $336) to spare and absolutely no concerns about what your devices look like, you could do worse.[Via Pocketables]

  • BDA granting 11 China-based manufacturers with Blu-ray licenses?

We'd take all of this with a healthy dose of salt just now, but reportedly, the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) is looking to grant 11 China-based manufacturers with Blu-ray licenses. As we've already seen, select Chinese companies have long since been listed on the BDA's website of licensees, but according to recent reports, even more are being allowed to "undertake R&D, production and marketing of BD discs, players or drives." It's said that the 11 in question include TCL, Malata, China Hualu Panasonic AVC Networks and Desay, and that volume production is expected to begin from at least some of them as early as 2009. It'll definitely be interesting to see where this takes things, if these whispers are in fact accurate.[Via HDTV Info, thanks gamedude420]

  • TCL set to launch air purifying PC

China's prolific electronics company TCL looks to be taking a less-than-conventional route to improving your computing experience with its latest desktop PC, packing an air purifier into its new S-series models to clean the air around you while you work -- you know, so you won't have to clutter up your desk with a USB-powered one. While the specs don't seem to have been revealed just yet, the PC will apparently come with a 22-inch widescreen monitor (or at least the option of one). There's also no indication of what it'll cost, although you can look for it to land in China sometime in the first half of next year.
