Wargaming.net has released a new gameplay video for World of Warplanes. The clip focuses on carrier-based fighters from the U.S. tech tree, including stalwarts like Grumman's Wildcat variants and Chance-Vought's deadly F4U Corsairs. There are a few lesser-known aircraft in the mix as well. Players can fly several early biplane fighters as well as jets like the F5U and F7U. World of Warplanes is currently in closed beta. The game is an arcade-style flight shooter that features four unique battle maps as well as 59 aircraft from the U.S., Germany, and the U.S.S.R. As with the American and German tech trees, Wargaming.net says it will add additional aircraft to the Soviet tree as the game nears launch. World of Warplanes is currently undergoing global alpha testing, and you can sign up to be a part of it at the game's official website. Before you go, though, have a look at the new Soviet tech tree and a new video clip after the cut as well as new screenshots in our WoWP gallery. Last week, we got to take a look at MechWarrior Online's freshly introduced CN9-A Centurion BattleMech. This week, however, the folks at Piranha Games want to give you some insight on what to do once you're seated in the cockpit of your giant robot, so they've dropped a new blog post titled Role Warfare for fans' consumption. The post first introduces players to the various roles available to MechWarrior Online players: scouting, assault, defense, and command. The roles are exactly what they sound like. Scouts gather intel, while assault 'Mechs assault and defense 'Mechs defend. Command mechs, believe it or not, command their respective teams. But how do you customize your 'Mech to fill one of these roles? As players progress through their matches, the BattleMechs that they use in battle will gain XP according to their battle performance. This XP can be spent to unlock upgrades in the BattleMech's tech tree. Each BattleMech will have its own distinct tech tree, and therefore its own distinct upgrade options. At certain points within the Tech Tree, players will receive Pilot Points, which are assigned directly to the player's pilot avatar and are used to purchase pilot abilities in the Pilot Skill Tree. Finally, players can purchase BattleMech modules with their C-Bills, which allows for the final layer of specialization on the customization cake. For the full details on the game's customization and upgrade system, and to get a run down of some recommended loadouts for various roles, click on through to MWO's official site below.

A new retail box isn't the only thing in store for fans of World of Tanks in the near future. Wargaming.net has just issued a press blurb confirming the action MMO's latest patch release for June 30th. Update 6.5 brings two new maps to the battlefront. Redshire takes it inspiration from traditional British settlements, while Arctic Region is the game's first pure winter locale. In addition to the maps, 6.5 also features a new lineup of American destroyer tanks including the famous T95 "super-heavy monster." The patch also introduces two premium light tanks (the American M22 Locust and the Russian T-127) as well as the M46 Patton, which is slated to replace the M26 Pershing. Wargaming.net CEO Victor Kislyi says this tweak is the first step toward a global tech tree revision. "We constantly keep polishing the game balance, and updating World of Tanks to 6.5 is yet another important step in this direction."

Dying for details on Civilization: Revolution? Yearning to know just what the reward will be if you're the first to get Masonry? Wonder no more, for the (incomplete) tech tree from the PS3/Xbox 360 demo versions of the game is available after the break. The DS version, it is worth noting, features the same gameplay, so the tree will apply. Some technologies are locked and unavailable in the demo, so everything isn't covered here, but thanks to Sigmakan at the 2K forums, we've got a pretty good idea of what we'll be racing for -- and how we'll use it -- then the game hits our beloved handheld early next month. %Gallery-14922%

  • GalCiv II: Dark Avatar goes gold, refines tech tree

Galactic Civilizations II is all set for its first expansion pack, Dark Avatar, releasing Feb. 14. The expansion will be available through digital distribution at TotalGaming.net and in retail stores as part of a Gold Edition bundle including the regular game.GalCiv II was an amazing achievement for Stardock, a relatively small company. If it hadn't been for the incredible design overhaul in Civilization IV, by the über well-funded Firaxis, which evolved the strategy game, GalCiv II's shortcomings would not have been so obvious. Despite all that the game sold very well. Thankfully, Stardock has been one company that has been incredibly straight in what they do well and where they falter. Their media kits are some of the most humorous and honest in the industry, this is why we like them and give more space after the break to GalCiv II.
