Tecmo Koei announced that the fourth entry in Omega Force's Samurai Warriors series is coming to the PlayStation 4, PS3, and PS Vita in North America and Europe this fall. Boasting a roster of 55 playable characters inspired by figures from Japan's Warring States period, Samurai Warriors 4 adds several new modes and features to its hack-and-slash repertoire, including the quest-based Chronicle Mode and networked cooperative play across all supported platforms. The release also marks Samurai Warriors' return to Sony's platforms after a brief absence. Though the series traces its origins back to the PlayStation 2, Samurai Warriors 3 premiered in 2010 as a Nintendo Wii exclusive, and the follow-up Samurai Warriors: Chronicles was available only for the Nintendo 3DS. Further details regarding Samurai Warriors 4 will be revealed at E3 next week. [Video: Tecmo Koei]

Tecmo Koei revealed one-versus-tons brawler Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate is coming to Xbox One, PS4, PS3 and Vita. The expanded re-release is the latest entry in the Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors spin-off series, and it's slated to launch this fall. Tecmo's press release notes the PS3 and Vita versions are digital-only and are priced $50 and $40 respectively. So presumably that means there are retail releases for PS4 and Xbox One, which are both priced at $60. Also, Tecmo says the PlayStation versions have cross-save and cross-play support. The new Ultimate version features the elements of the core Orochi 3 game as well as the content added to the PSP and Wii U releases. It also expands upon the plot with a new main campaign that follows on from the Orochi 3 ending, and with new side stories. The player character roster ups to 145, with new additions including Xu Shu of the Dynasty Warriors series and Ninja Gaiden Sigma's Rachel. [Image: Tecmo Koei]

Tecmo Koei's Wii U crossover brawler Hyrule Warriors is hitting store shelves in Japan on August 14, Japanese magazine Famitsu reports (via Siliconera). Launching in Japan with the title Zelda Musou, Hyrule Warriors pits The Legend of Zelda series protagonist Link against spawning hordes of familiar foes. Famitsu additionally reports that the project is a collaboration between Dynasty Warriors series developer Omega Force and Team Ninja producers Hisashi Koinuma and Yosuke Hayasahi. A North American release date for Hyrule Warriors has not been announced. [Image: Tecmo Koei]

  • Japan says moshi moshi to Bayonetta 2, Hyrule Warriors this summer

Bayonetta 2 and Hyrule Warriors are set for summertime debuts in Japan, but North America and Europe are still getting by with a nebulous and miasmic 2014 window. Just to recap - just in case - both games are Nintendo-published Wii U exclusives. Hyrule Warriors sees Tecmo Koei bring its dynasty to the Zelda family, with Link taking on hordes of enemies at a time in fast-paced 3D action. Nintendo's previously stressed the game isn't a new installment in The Legend of Zelda series, and we already know a new, convention-rethinking entry is in development for Wii U. Whereas with Bayonetta 2, what we know is Platinum's hack-and-slash is absolutely bonkers. We also know the sequel adds a two-player mode to the madness, and features both analog and touch-based controls. Oh, and Bayonetta sports a glam new do. Apart from Mario Kart 8, there are two other first-party Wii U games confirmed for the West this year. Monolith Soft's X is scheduled for sometime in 2014, while the console version of Super Smash Bros. is pinned for the winter. On the 3DS side, beyond the games confirmed for May and June there's the handheld Smash in the summer, and the only-just-announced Pokemon Sapphire and Ruby remakes for November. [Image: Nintendo]

PC-only gamers haven't been able to enjoy Dynasty Warrior 8's hectic, definitely-true-to-history battles between ancient Chinese kingdoms, but Tecmo Koei is about to fix that. The publisher is bringing Omega Force's DW8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition to Steam on May 13 in North America and Europe. The Complete Edition bundles the base game of DW8 with its Xtreme Legends expansion, which adds new characters, story episodes, weapons and enhancements to the Ambition, Challenge and Free modes. Complete Edition's minimum requirements call for at least Windows Vista, with 512 MB of RAM, a VRAM 256MB video card and an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor 2.4 GHz (or Intel Core i7 860) rounding out base requirements. Support for gamepads will also be present, as will be support for DirectX 9.0c. [Image: Tecmo Koei]

The next entry in the Fatal Frame series will haunt Nintendo's Wii U console, according to a Famitsu report translated by Gematsu. Nintendo and Tecmo Koei recently announced the new game, though the two corporations offered no further information on this project. Instead, they used this opportunity to promote a number of multimedia tie-ins tangentially linked to the survival horror franchise, including a novel, a manga and a live-action film from director Mari Asato. Unfortunately for anyone in North America that's a fan of camera-shy ghosts, it seems unlikely that the next Fatal Frame will ever reach our shores. As Gematsu points out, the prior entry, Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, made its Japanese Wii debut in 2008, but has yet to be localized for any other region. The 2012 Wii remake of Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly did manage to reach Europe, but it too skipped North America. [Image: Nintendo]

Tecmo Koei has issued a public request for feedback from players experiencing bugs within the newly launched PlayStation 4 and PS Vita versions of Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition in an effort to fix widely reported issues. The publisher is specifically targeting online connection issues in the PlayStation 4 version of Dynasty Warriors 8 and framerate drops on the PS Vita. Tecmo Koei asks affected players to report "where, [with] which characters, [in] which stages and when" the bugs occur, along with regional details via its Facebook page. Tecmo Koei additionally revealed that a Steam version of Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition is due to launch in May. [Image: Tecmo Koei]

  • Toukiden nabs free Soul Sacrifice crossover armor, mission DLC

If you're running out of beasts to slay in Toukiden: The Age of Demons, this week brought new DLC missions featuring Soul Sacrifice's three-headed dog, Cerberus. Of course, you can't just go slaying monsters from other games without dressing the part, so the collaborative DLC includes a new set of armor inspired by gear found in Soul Sacrifice. If you're waiting on a price to scare you off, don't worry - both the missions and the armor are free to download. The new content can be accessed using the Portal Stone and multiplayer lobbies, but the related press release warns that the missions are meant for "groups of great level and skill, with highly upgraded equipment." Considering the lack of a price tag, Toukiden players should probably take this chance to slash up Cerberus. Besides, we can't imagine that Toukiden's residents are much more fond of the triple-headed beast than any of the Oni you've already saved them from. [Image: Tecmo Koei]

What's that we see on the horizon? Why, it's a trap! Haha, get it? We ... wait, is that ... a second trap? And a third? A fourth? Look here Tecmo Koei, this isn't how the reference is supposed to go. We know you've got a variety of traps to show off in your upcoming PS3 and Vita game Deception 4: Blood Ties, but we're trying to make a pop culture joke here! Oh, alright. Since these new Deception 4 trailers show off how players can make their traps elaborate, humiliating, sadistic, or even "super" when they combine all three elements, we'll let it fly this time. Just don't place any secret doors or giant mallets in our local game stores when Deception 4 hits shelves on March 25. As for anyone else reading this, you can check out Deception 4's elaborate, humiliating and sadistic traps after the break. [Image: Tecmo Koei]

Welcome to Joystiq Weekly, a "too long; didn't read" of each week's biggest stories, reviews and original content. Each category's top story is introduced with a reactionary gif, because moving pictures aren't just for The Daily Prophet. We saw many great games and met with many great people during this year's Game Developers Conference in sunny San Francisco. Or did we? One of the biggest announcements of the show was undoubtedly Project Morpheus, the upcoming virtual reality headset from Sony, and during our hands-on demo, we felt pretty darn virtual. So now the question is: What if we didn't really attend GDC 2014? What if it was all virtual reality? Whoa, dude. Sony also gained news traction this week thanks to the release of PS4-exclusive, Infamous: Second Son. Meanwhile, Snake/Jack Bauer has come out of retirement (again) to save the world in Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes, and a new cyborg ninja came to town with the release of Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z. You can read all about these games and more of the week's biggest and best after the break. [Image: Joystiq]

Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate will be adding more new faces to its roster, developer Team Ninja tweeted today. The fighters will be introduced into arcade versions of the game first, and come to consoles later. Team Ninja also announced that the yet-to-be-revealed fighters will be grouped together as part of a "New Characters" set after all of them have made their way to DOA5 Ultimate Arcade, but that such a pack would not be available for at least six months. Marie Rose, the newest fighter to the DOA universe, will be punching and kicking her way across PS3 on March 25, and Xbox 360 one day later. [Image: Tecmo Koei]

  • Deception 4: Blood Ties pre-order traps range from kinky to surreal

Deception has always appealed to a specific audience with a matching sense of humor. Deception IV: Blood Ties' pre-order bonuses handily encapsulate that spirit. They are a heady blend of the macabre, the sadistic, and the deeply goofy. Players in Deception devote their time to laying out elaborate traps for would-be heroes trying to invade their castle. Think of its as an elaborate game of Mouse Trap, but replace the primary colored doodads with tools right out of a dungeon, in both medieval and dominatrix varieties. European fans that pick up Tecmo-Koei's sequel will have access to four unique traps. The first comes from GAME, and it's a good old-fashioned guillotine. The second, from a variety of mom and pop game shops, is the "Golden Horse" pommel, which is sillier and pretty base. (As Tecmo says, it's intended to strike "right at your poor's rival's nether parts.") Then things start getting ultra weird with the PlayStation Store exclusive "Queen's Heel," an enormous stiletto that falls from the ceiling. Finally, Amazon shoppers get a UFO. Because of course the cherry on every psycho-sexual comedy sundae is a giant UFO that shoots wary knights into space. Deception IV: Blood Ties, exclusive to PlayStation 3 and PS Vita, is perhaps one of 2014's most unlikely games, coming nine years after the last entry, Trapt for PlayStation 2. [Images: Tecmo-Koei]

Tecmo-Koei announced that a new entry in its Dynasty Warriors: Gundam mecha brawler series is coming to North America and Europe this summer for the PlayStation 3. Dynasty Warriors: Gundam Reborn features a variety of playable scenarios inspired by the past 30 years of Gundam anime and manga, including a collection of missions based on the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED series. A trio of games preceded Reborn on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 3 hitting both platforms in 2011. Reborn is the first series entry to premiere exclusively for the PS3. Dynasty Warriors: Gundam Reborn will launch digitally via the PlayStation Network in North America. Players in Europe can choose between a downloadable copy and a region-exclusive retail release. [Image: Tecmo-Koei]

  • Toukiden: The Age of Demons review: Oni hunter

    by
    Mike Suszek

    02.21.2014

Toukiden: The Age of Demons isn't quite developer Omega Force's "Monster Hunter clone," though just like its closest neighbor, up to four players pound away at larger-than-life beasts in exotic locales to haul in rare items and acquire new gear. Toukiden attempts to maintain the same appeal as Monster Hunter and similar games by emphasizing progression through equipment upgrades. The Tecmo Koei-published Toukiden bears so many similarities to Capcom's franchise, in fact, that it's practically a part of it, which ends up being its problem. Toukiden falls short when it comes to pushing the genre forward in any meaningful way, resting as a functional, albeit hollow monster hunting experience.

Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition - whew, long title! - will be swinging and slashing its way across PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 4 systems on March 25, according to a recent press release from publisher Tecmo Koei. It will be the first Dynasty Warriors game for the PS4. Complete Edition is a port of Dynasty Warriors 8 plus its stand-alone expansion, Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends, which also has a release date of March 25. Xtreme Legends, like any good expansion, brings new levels, new characters and expanded modes. Five new characters bring the total roster up to 82, which is, technically-speaking, a freaking lot of people to play as. Already a Dynasty Warriors fan with a head-start on the PS3 version of the game looking to upgrade to the PS4 or Vita version? Good news, everyone! Your Dynasty Warriors 8 save file will transfer across all systems. Tecmo previously tweeted that the games would be coming in spring 2014, but now you know exactly which date to call in sick be a responsible adult. [Image: Tecmo Koei]

"Additionally, we're also developing a PlayStation 4 title internally, so please look forward to future updates." No further details regarding the team's coming PS4 project were revealed. A jam-packed special edition of Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z will be available in limited quantities for PS3 and Xbox 360, bundling the game with a full-color comic from Dark Horse, some Yaiba costumes for Ryu Hayabusa and Mimoji in Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate and the full Yaiba soundtrack. Publisher Tecmo Koei has also revealed some bonus costumes and screenshots for Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z. You can see a Mighty No. 9 crossover and a schoolgirl get-up in our galleries below. Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z tells the story of Yaiba Kamikaze, a ninja who is almost killed when he encounters Ninja Gaiden series poster child Ryu Hayabusa. Yaiba loses an arm and an eye in the fight and has them replaced with cybernetic implants. He agrees to help a corporation quell a zombie outbreak in return for information on where to find Hayabusa so that he might exact his revenge. Yaiba launches on the aforementioned consoles, along with PC through Steam, on March 18.

Like a zombie slowly shuffling toward tasty, tasty brains, the release date for Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z has limped from March 4, 2014 to March 18. For those who can't wait to witness zombie murder at the hands of a ninja cyborg, however, Team Ninja and Dark Horse Comics have released the first of a three-part comic series that provides insight into the world and story of the upcoming game. Written by Tim Seeley (Army of Darkness vs. Hack/Slash) and Josh Emmons (Ex Sanguine), the debut issue has main character Yaiba explaining how his sword came to be known as "Heartless." Just a wild guess here, but we're going to wager it has something to do with it being used to kill a lot of people. Maybe we're wrong, though! You can find out by downloading the first issue for free from the Dark Horse digital store or via the iOS or Android apps. The comic will also be available in physical format when the game releases.

There's selfless, and then there's killing off your own kind while working toward your own demise to save the human race. This anime trailer serves as a separate introduction to Toukiden: The Age of Demons from its opening cinematic. Toukiden is set to trample demons on the Vita on February 11.
