Dell Streak 10 Pro vs. Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1... fight!
Why look at this! Samsung's very own Galaxy Tab 10.1 decided to stop by in Beijing to greet Dell's latest tablet. As mentioned in our hands-on post, it's clear that the Streak 10 Pro would need to go on a little diet to match the Korean tablet's lovely figure and weight, though the latter won't be released in the country until some time next month. Also, there's no doubt that Sammy will continue to ask for a premium price in exchange for the better display and portability, so our wallets will be the final judge. Dell Streak 10 Pro tablet makes global debut in China, we go hands-on (update: video!)
There's a Chinese saying that will suit most of our Western readers here: "quenching thirst by gazing at plums." Oh yes, we're talking about Dell's Streak 10 Pro alright. Just as promised, said US company has skipped its home country to debut its first 10.1-inch Honeycomb tablet in China (ka-ching!), and we happened to be at the Beijing press event for some intimate hands-on time. To be honest, you won't be needing many imaginary plums for this Android's rather mundane specs: it's equipped with the oh-so-familiar 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 T20 chip, 1GB DDR2 RAM, 1,280 x 800 LCD (with Corning's Gorilla Glass), 5 megapixel camera and 2 megapixel camera back and front, and regular-size SDHC expansion. That said, Chinese buyers can grab this 16GB WiFi tablet plus 2GB of cloud storage for just ¥2,999 ($465) a pop -- a slightly more attractive price compared to its competitors. Acer Iconia Tab A100 finally available in August for $300
It's been a long and twisted road for Acer's 7-inch Honeycomb tablet, but after all the starts and stops, we've finally got an ETA for the Iconia Tab A100. According to an email sent out to Acer retail partners today, the slab should land in stores sometime in early August with a suggested price tag of $300. The Tegra 2-powered device was originally slated for a mid-May launch, but was reportedly held up by Honeycomb compatibility issues. Also arriving early August, is a pair of new Aspire notebooks: the 15.6-inch 5750Z and the 17.3-inch 7739Z, ringing in at $475 a piece. Both laptops rock 4GB of DDR3 RAM (upgradable to 8GB), 500GB of storage, and Intel Pentium processors. Given the extra three months Acer's had to get the Iconia Tab A100 to market, that Honeycomb better taste extra sweet when it finally makes its debut. [Thanks, Anon]
Motorola Photon 4G ready for order on Sprint's site
Between the quarterly earnings and the LightSquared agreement, it's been an roller coaster day for Sprint and high noon is still nigh. Adding to the craziness, the Motorola Photon 4G -- officially in stores on July 31st -- is now available for order on Sprint's online store. Early adopters from coast to coast can get their grubby hands on the device for $200, which will give you a 4.3-inch qHD display, 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 CPU, 1GB of RAM, Android 2.3 pre-installed, and 4G connectivity (among plenty of other goodies). 'Course, the Now Network's evident 4G switchover may dissuade a few of us from committing to WiMAX for a full two years, but we digress. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Toshiba Thrive review
This isn't the first time Toshiba has showed up fashionably late to a party. Back in 2009, long after most every other consumer electronics maker big and small had jumped on the netbook bandwagon, the company belatedly released its first mini, the NB205. And it was fantastic. So we were optimistic when the outfit finally got around to releasing the Thrive, its first Android tablet for the US market. Surely, we thought, it's learned a thing or two from everybody else's mistakes. And in that regard, at least, this 10-inch tablet doesn't disappoint. It has full-sized USB and HDMI ports, an SD card slot, and a removable battery -- all features you'd sooner find on a laptop. It comes with a raft of practical apps already installed, so that you don't have to go hunting for them in Android Market. It's one of the first out of the gate with Android 3.1, an undeniably improved version of Honeycomb. Oh, and it starts at $429, undercutting many of its competitors. Right there, in less than a paragraph, we've laid out why you might want this over any of the other umpteen tabs crowding the market. But should you get one? T-Mobile G2x Gingerbread update running through employee trials, "coming soon" just got closer
You didn't think T-Mobile forgot all about you G2x users out there, did ya? The phone, foreordained to become the carrier's poster child, didn't have the best launch ever; when you release a device plagued with glitches and a nearly-immediate inventory shortage, you're not really starting off on the right foot. Don't let those "out of stock" signs fool you into thinking the mystical handset has been completely wiped from existence, however. It's still around -- in fact, the "Get More" network is hard at work to give more, prepping the phone's update to Gingerbread that'll likely include much-needed fixes. We reached out to a T-Mobile spokesperson, who briefed us on the progress of this elusive refresh: T-Mobile is working with LG to deliver a software update to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) for the G2x, which we expect will deliver some performance enhancements. We are currently trialing this update with a pilot group of T-Mobile employees. As it appears, we're another step closer to one of the most-anticipated software updates of the summer. There's no telling how long this testing phase will last, nor what steps lay between now and "this summer." Regardless, Android 2.3 is still on track to show up "sooner than we'd expect," which is accurate... if you expected it to take four months.
EAFT's MagicTile Marathon tablet gets priced, opens up the floodgates of Froyo nostalgia
Hey, remember 2010? Lady Gaga was all over the radio and all the kids were crazy excited about the upcoming Deathly Hallows movie. And then there was Froyo -- it was never designed to be a tablet OS, but manufacturers defiantly went against Google's wishes. EAFT is carrying that torch with the MagicTile Marathon, a 10 inch tablet doesn't look too bad from a hardware perspective, with a Tegra 2 chip, 3G, 1080p video, and an HDMI port. The whole Android 2.2 thing makes the tablet seem downright archaic, however. Interested parties can pick the tablet for Rs. 26,999 (around $607) at launch and Rs. 29,990 (around $675) later. We hear it's great for watching your favorite Charlie Sheen episodes of Two and a Half Men.
Motorola Photon 4G gets the bargain bin treatment at Wirefly, Walmart
Pew pew. Those are the sounds we instantly hear whenever we come across Motorola's Photon 4G. Sadly, the soon-to-be dual-core star of Sprint's smartphone lineup won't come pre-loaded with a laser soundboard on July 31st, but it can be pre-ordered now -- for a significant markdown. All it takes is a quick internetting trip to either Wirefly or Walmart, where this WiMAX handset's up for a $20 - $40 discount. It's not a massive price chop on par with free, but it should move some yellow-tinged operator inventory. If walking the straight and narrow's your bag, you could still always opt for the direct carrier two-year contract option -- but why? Hit the source to get yourself in line for this cut-rate beast.
Sony S1 and S2 hands-on
Now that Sony has spilled the carrier-exclusive beans on at least one of its tablets, the S2 clamshell, the company kindly gave us a chance to get some long-awaited hands-on time with both it and its sibling, the S1 slate. And at time when it feels like we handle a new Honeycomb Android tablet every other day, these at least usher in some pretty unusual form factors. On the one hand, you've got the S1, a 9.4-inch number whose rounded wedge profile was designed to mimic a folded magazine. On the opposite end of the spectrum, there's the S2, which opens to reveal twin 5.5-inch displays -- all the more of a novelty since we've barely seen Android 3.0 running on devices that don't have 10-inch displays. Alas, we only had a few minutes to poke around, and in particular we would have loved to spend more time sinking our teeth into Sony's spin on Honeycomb. Lenovo IdeaPad K1 begins shipment odyssey, courtesy of Office Depot
The IdeaPad K1's long, crazy journey of near-availability looks to finally be at an end. Lenovo's ethereal Honeycomb tablet has been popping up in online retail sites since May, teasing us with availability in June, and finally offering the promise of pre-order earlier this month. It seems that the plucky 10.1 inch Tegra 2 slate has taken the final step separating itself from the hands of consumers: getting sent out for shipment. One tipster passed along shipping confirmation from Office Depot that has the device lined up for delivery today -- assuming, of course that the recipient is there to answer the door in the eight and a half hour delivery window provided. Toshiba Thrive in stock at Newegg and Amazon, is ready to ship free to your door
You'll need to wait until Sunday to get your hands on a Toshiba Thrive at Best Buy, but the Honeycomb slate is ready to head out Newegg's door, with free shipping to boot. $430 nets you an 8GB tablet with two-day shipping, or you can add 30 bucks to get it overnight. That's unlikely to mean tomorrow at this point, but if you play your cards right, you could be sliding through emails a la Swype before the weekend is out. Update: Best Buy has confirmed that the Thrive will be available on July 10th, both in-store and online. Update 2: Looks like it's live on Amazon, too!
Another Galaxy S II passes through the FCC, possibly rockin' a Tegra 2
What we have here appears to be some variation of the Samsung Galaxy S II, with support for 850MHz and 1900MHz GSM frequencies, making its way through the FCC. Now, we know what you're thinking, "didn't we already see an AT&T ready S II?" Yep, but this one sports a different model number -- GT-I9103, and you know where we've seen that before? Those mysterious Tegra 2-equipped Galaxy S II benchmarks. The rumblings of Sammy's flagship handset coming in two versions, one rocking NVIDIA's mobile chip, aren't without precedent -- Exynos is still fairly young silicon and this could be a way to boost supplies (as we put it, in the most politically correct terms possible) "outside its critical markets." In other words, don't expect to pick one of these up at your local AT&T shop, unless your local store happens to be in St. Petersburg Russia.
Toshiba Thrive tablet on display at Best Buy, possibly on sale too?
Yes, what you're looking at is a shackled Toshiba Thrive tablet out in the wild at Best Buy -- not just waiting caged in a cardboard confine in some dreary stockroom. Though the device most likely won't ship until July 10th, "Dandroid" over at Toshiba Thrive Forums is reporting that his local Austin, Texas location is evidently neglecting that memo. The store apparently has several 16GB and 32GB WiFi models ready to fly off the shelves for $480 and $580, but we won't hold our breath until we see a proper YouTube unboxing. Still, it may be worth a detour on the way home if you're feeling lucky or just can't wait any longer to inspect those full-sized ports.
Toshiba Thrive WiFi tablet hitting Best Buy on July 10th?
Toshiba's Thrive -- the Honeycomb tablet that went so long without a name -- has evidently snagged itself a July 10th street date, according to Best Buy's inventory database. If you'll recall, pre-orders for the 10.1-inch pad got underway June 13th, and though we've long been hearing it would go on sale July 10th, Toshiba has only been giving a loose ETA of mid-July. Our tipster's informed us that their particular location's received "quite a few" 16-giggers in-stock, and they're just waiting to shine under the fluorescent showroom lights. So, it'll still be about a week's time until you can get your paws on one, but in the meantime, scoot past the break and you'll find some Thrive packages in the flesh, er, cardboard. Lenovo IdeaPad K1 up for Amazon pre-order, still toting $500 price tag
The IdeaPad K1 is really living up to its name these days, existing merely as an idea and a visualized concept, but not a real deal purchasable commodity. That's changing ever so slowly, however, with an appearance among Amazon's pre-order inventory, where the Tegra 2 Android slate is accompanied by the $499.99 price tag we saw just over a week ago. The major specs are as we've heard them before: a 10.1-inch screen with 1280 x 800 resolution and 300 nits of brightness, a microSD card reader, micro-HDMI out, and, interestingly, a SIM card slot. The latter doesn't quite confirm that we're looking at a 3G tablet, but comes close to it. Also close should be the K1's release date, which isn't spelled out by Amazon, but is expected to arrive any time now.
Android 3.1 update for Acer Iconia Tab A500 leaks out in China, can be downloaded worldwide
If you have an Iconia Tab A500 and an unbridled passion for running the latest Android software, we've got good news for you. Acer's 3.1 update for the 10-inch Tegra 2 slate has actually slipped out a little early and can now be downloaded at the source link below. It brings the resizable widgets and other goodies that Xoom and Eee Pad Transformer users have been savoring for a while, though that's naturally not been enough for some and there are already custom ROMs built off this leak that augment the upgrade with superuser privileges. Alternatively, should you be disinclined to flash your own tablet, you can just wait for Acer to start beaming Android 3.1 over the air to its European A500s on July 5th.
Lenovo Ideapad Tablet K1 priced at $500 by Office Depot, inches closer to release
The Ideapad Tablet K1 is about as well known an unannounced product as there is right now, having been pictured and listed by a couple of online retailers and passed the requisite tests over at the FCC. What we weren't quite so sure about was its price, which a tipster now informs us is $499.99, and its launch date, which looks to be fast approaching. The Office Depot placard we've been forwarded promises 32GB of storage, Android 3.0 (with a "custom-built" interface on top), 1280 x 800 resolution on a 10.1-inch multitouch screen, a pair of cameras, up to 10 hours of battery life, a weight of 1.6lb (725g), and a thickness of just over half an inch (13.2mm). Elusive Acer Iconia Tab A100 coming to Walmart for $349 (updated)
Typically, the whole fun of spotting products in the wild is that they haven't been officially announced to the world yet, but in the case of the Acer Iconia Tab A100, we're just amazed it's finally here, and that it's so... unassuming. Just weeks after rearing its head in FCC drawings, the delayed Tab has quietly surfaced at Walmart with a price tag of $349. That sticker there says it all, but for the money you'll get Tegra 2 innards with 8GB of internal storage, a 2 megapixel front-facing camera, and a 5 megapixel one 'round the back. And of course, it runs Android 3.0 at a time when most other 7-inchers still tap out at Android 2.3 -- possibly the reason it was delayed in the first place. There's no listing on Walmart's website just yet, and our tipsters indicated it wasn't actually on display. Still, if we're seeing a price and tag, that means we're beyond the point of any more delays... right? Update: What you see in the wild is a display tag -- not the elusive A100, of course. You can't pop into a Walmart to buy one yet, but if that sticker is any indication, that'll change soon. Olivetti's OliPad 110 tablet runs on Honeycomb, olive oil
Just a few months after unleashing what it called Italy's first tablet, Olivetti is turning its attention to what might be Italy's first tablet upgrade -- the OliPad 110. Much like its predecessor, this 1.3-pound slate rocks an NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and a 10-inch touchscreen, but runs on Honeycomb and boasts a higher-res, 1280 x 800 display. There's also a two-megapixel camera strapped to the front, a five-megapixel lens 'round back and 16GB of onboard memory. Toshiba Thrive pre-order now live, starts at $430 and ends up in your hands in mid-July
As promised, Toshiba is marking June 13th with pre-order availability of its Thrive Android (3.1!) tablet, a device whose life aspiration and name happen to coincide perfectly. This 10-inch Tegra 2 portable has the usual 1280 x 800 resolution, dual cameras (5 megapixel on the back, 2 megapixel up front), a gigabyte of RAM, and a 23WHr battery, but it also brings nice expandability with full-size HDMI, USB 2.0 and SD card slots. The Easy Grip back covers can be swapped -- which, yes, means you can also replace the battery -- though you'll have to splash out $20 for any non-black hues. The 8GB Thrive costs $430, followed by the 16GB unit at $480 and the 32GB option at $580.
