GOG.com kicked off its DRM-free Big Fall Sale Finale this morning, putting more than 700 games on sale until Tuesday, November 25. The sale is split into two 48-hour periods, the first a "recap of flash deals" that rapidly come and go, and a second period with the Big Fall Sale's daily bundles that starts on Sunday. Thrifty buyers may want to act fast, as some of the flash deals will expire within hours. The deals include Fez ($5), Rogue Legacy ($3), Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition ($2.49), Pathologic ($2), System Shock 2 ($5), Rollercoaster Tycoon: Deluxe Edition ($3), FTL: Advanced Edition ($5) and the four primary Wing Commander games are $3 each, with the first two games bundled together. Sam & Max Save the World and Beyond Time and Space are $15 each, while The Devil's Playhouse is $17.49. OG.com also has deals on bundles starting today, such as the Fedora Deluxe Pack, a five-game Tex Murphy bundle that players can download at 80 percent off ($7.16). The digital games distributor is also offering a movie bundle for $8.45 that features five films, including The King of Arcades, Pixel Poetry and Minecraft: The Story of Mojang. [Image: GOG.com]

  • Joystiq Weekly: Xbox One's Kinect, Mario Kart 8 review, Godzilla's past and more

Welcome to Joystiq Weekly, a "too long; didn't read" of each week's biggest stories, reviews and original content. Each category's top story is introduced with a reactionary gif, because moving pictures aren't just for The Daily Prophet. If machinery works the way The Brave Little Toaster suggests, you gotta feel for the Kinect - the solid experiences it supplements are often drowned in complaints about its underwhelming games, as well as its general inaccuracies as a listening, motion-tracking controller. We imagine Microsoft reassured the device about its playground reputation by including it with every Xbox One out there, but then ... well, this week happened. Kinect might be destined to just stay at home now, waiting for a band of appliance-shaped adventures to accept his flaws so it can tag along with for their straight-to-Blu Ray sequel. Hey, on the upside, at least that terrifying air conditioner died off before Kinect was ever able to meet him. Can you imagine being left alone in a house with that thing as a kid? Talk about new legitimate fears. Anyway, now that we're done painting a bleak picture of Kinect's secret social life, there's a lot more to this week than technological popularity contests. It's financial season, with Ubisoft, Take-Two and the NPD Group throwing numbers everywhere, we've got reviews for Mario Kart 8 and Super Time Force, and there's also a dip into Godzilla's past of ruining virtual metropolises. It's all stacked neat and orderly for you after the break!

  • Atlus publishing Tesla Effect: A Tex Murphy Adventure in early 2014

The successfully Kickstarted Tesla Effect: A Tex Murphy Adventure has its private eye on PC and Mac early next year, thanks to newly announced publisher Atlus. The sci-fi gumshoe's revival achieved just under $600,000 in funding a year ago, back when it was known as Project Fedora. Now developer Big Finish Games has a big name publisher to help it "more fully" realize its vision for Tex's new outing. In an update on the Project Fedora Kickstarter page, creator Chris Jones said support from Atlus will include play-testing the game every week and "more polish" in the final product, as well as greater opportunities for coverage and distribution. It should mean a few more sexy FMV trailers, we'd imagine.

  • Tex Murphy's familiar faces and the appeal of FMV in a CG age

The Tex Murphy: Project Fedora Kickstarter is fully funded, and even looks in reach of surpassing its $450,000 goal by a solid $100,000 when the campaign expires on Saturday, June 16. Then the real work begins.Project Fedora will be shot in Tex Murphy's classic full-motion video, with series creator Chris Jones returning as the man in the hat. Not that it's the same hat."Unfortunately, the original fedora has been crushed so many times it makes me look like Jed Clampett about to go to his favorite fishing hole," Jones tells Joystiq. Never fear, keepers of continuity: Project Fedora's trench coat is the same one from the previous Tex Murphy titles. Germophobes, maybe ignore that bit of insider information.Along with a slightly updated wardrobe, Project Fedora is taking advantage of technological advances in FMV that weren't accessible 20 years ago. "CG is used in action movies more often than not these days and I have no doubt that FMV could be integrated much more effectively – and with less effort – than back in the day," Jones says. "Today, with fewer restrictions and limitations, we can do it even better."

Jones discusses the team's "big finish manifesto" in the video above.[Thanks, Shaun!]

The rumored Tex Murphy Kickstarter has been confirmed, to the tune of $216,000 (out of $450k as of this writing). That's how much creators Chris Jones and Aaron Conners have put together already to make the long-awaited "Project Fedora," the next in the cult classic series of full motion video sci-fi noir titles. You can get a copy of the (eventual) game just by backing at the price of $15, and there are lots of other rewards for higher payments, including a collector's edition, new commentary for the old Tex Murphy games, and even the chance to beta test and be in the game itself. The creators say that the game will have full-motion video, but it will also include a 3D game world, with branching paths of story to follow. As Tex says in the wild Kickstarter video, "it's hat-in-hand time," so go over and give if you want to get in early.

Before we say anything here, make sure you've got a firm grasp on your wallet because it might just jump out of your pocket. The odds are very good that Tex Murphy is coming back in a new game ... funded by Kickstarter. Whoa there! Hang on to that wallet, there's no place to spend your money just yet, kid!As announced by the trailer above, Big Finish Games indeed has plans to start up a Kickstarter page on May 15, and try to round up fan-based funding for a sixth game in the fondly remembered full-motion video adventure series. What they're asking for right now is ideas on what to offer in the Kickstarter campaign, as well as written or video testimonials from fans extolling the series' virtues, to be delivered to the company's contact page.On May 15, the page is supposed to go live, and at that point you can donate to your heart's content. Chris Jones, who both designed the games and plays Tex Murphy himself, is obviously on board, because you can see him mugging in character with the latest People magazine right there in the video.

GOG.com has released Star Control 3 on the digital distribution service -- the sequel to the Toys for Bob strategy classics isn't quite as well-remembered as the other games in the series, but completists who want to finish off the story of the Precursors can pick up the title for $5.99. If you want some quality 4X space gaming, Master of Orion 1 and 2 are available for the same price -- just sayin'. And speaking of negotiating with aliens in old-school games, all of the Tex Murphy titles are also on sale this weekend, from the original games up to 1998's Tex Murphy: Overseer (which itself is actually a retelling of the first story in the series). If you're up for some interactive mystery in a sci-fi setting, GOG's got you covered.

Who's Tex Murphy, you might ask? No, not the guy who created Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck -- that's Tex Avery. Tex Murphy is the protagonist of a series of vintage adventure games, combining post-apocalyptic sci-fi with pulp detective stories. If that sounds intriguing to you, you can get the first two games in the series, Mean Streets and Martian Memorandum, for free from GOG.com! The games may not have aged gracefully, but the price certainly has. The site is offering the two Access Software adventures as a holiday gift, from now through December 24. Or, if you already bought those games from GOG, you can get a mysterious "alternative gift."
