Microsoft has just confirmed the speculation that the teaser trailer released by Bungie a few weeks ago is in fact a storyline expansion to Halo 3. Taking place prior to the events of the Halo 3 story, Halo 3 Recon (its official title) will put gamers in the shoes of a UNSC marine trooper -- specifically an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper -- and marks the first time since players took on the role as the Arbiter to play through the Halo universe as a character other than the Master Chief.Halo 3 Recon, the standalone expansion featuring a new hero and new campaign, hits the Xbox 360 exclusively in Fall 2009.[Update: According to an Xbox.com News Flash, Halo 3 Recon will take place during the events leading to the return of Master Chief to New Mombasa in Halo 3. The game will feature a brand new campaign, four player co-op gameplay and new multiplayer content. Halo 3 Recon will include exclusive new multiplayer maps and Forge options as well as maintain what gamers loved from Halo 3 including Saved Films, screenshots and campaign scoring.]

var digg_url = 'http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/08/joystiq-live-from-microsofts-tgs-2008-press-conference/'; Update 2: Microsoft's TGS conference has concluded. Click here for all the exciting TGS news including the big reveal of Halo 3: Recon!Update: Joystiq is live-blogging the press conference RIGHT NOW! We already know what's going to be on the show floor and have a pretty good idea that Bungie will be involved, but we are totally in the dark to what other exciting news Microsoft will be announcing during their Tokyo Game Show 2008 press conference. The Microsoft conference kicks off TONIGHT at 11:00PM eastern (8:00PM pacific), when team Microsoft storms the TGS stage and hopefully makes a few hugely major announcements. Remember too that you can read conference play by play by visiting Joystiq, because they'll be in attendance and will be live-blogging all the juicy bits. Here at Fanboy Towers, we'll be staying up extra late just in case OMG megaton news drops. We're excited and you should be too. While you wait for tonight's TGS festivities, we recommend clicking over to Joystiq to view a five picture photo gallery of Microsoft's Japanese Xbox HQ. Quite the nifty building, but is it just us or does the shape of the building look eerily similar to the Playstation 3? Gallery: Xbox Japan HQ

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/nintendo/No_More_Heroes_sequel_VIDEO'; Not even sure if we can hold it together long enough to write some intelligent commentary about this announcement. Marvelous said that they'd reveal a game from a charismatic game creator at this year's TGS; they've revealed the creator to be Suda 51, and the game to be a sequel to No More Heroes, the best Wii game ever. Called No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle, the game once again stars Travis Touchdown, and once again takes place in Santa Destroy. We don't know much else -- in fact, we're only assuming it's another Wii game -- but we know it's GOTY 2009, unless it takes longer to develop, in which case it will be GOTY 2010. We would like to wish everyone else at TGS good luck trying to get us to pay attention to their announcements. [Update 2: Marvelous's TGS press release (PDF) confirms that it's a Wii game. The best part? It's already scheduled for release in Europe (in February or March of 2010) and the US (January 2010).] [Update: We'll leave it on Wii Fanboy for now, but "Desperate Struggle" sounds suspiciously like one of those clever subtitles given to DS games.] %Gallery-34131% [Thanks, sn1per!]

    10.07.2008

Heading into the weekend festivities that is this year's Tokyo Game Show, Microsoft just officially revealed their lineup of games that will be available to play, see and experience at their TGS booth. The list (posted after the break) includes the standard assortment of MGS games including Nuts & Bolts and Fable 2, (but no Gears 2, sad face) as well as Japanese favorites Star Ocean: The Last Hope (first time playable) and The Last Remnant. In total, Microsoft has 23 games listed, but conveniently left out any mention of a Bungie title. We're sure the secret Bungie title/DLC will not be on the show floor, which is why it isn't on the list, but some acknowledgment of its TGS appearance would be nice. You can't fool us Microsoft, we know you have some secret Halo TGS plans ... oh, we know.

It's been a long time, but we're glad Nintendo's press event and TGS have kick-started the release of news regarding Vanillaware's Oboro Muramasa Youtouden, coming here as Muramasa: The Demon Blade. Only a few days after the last release of screens, we have another ... couple of screens! While we'd love to read hands-on impressions, or learn more about the release date for any region beyond "2009," we can state honestly that it's quite enough for us to look at screens of this incredibly beautiful game. We'll need a couple more months to take all this in before we'll need to play it or anything.Well, actually, it isn't enough for us. Marvelous will be handing out Oboro Muramasa screen-cleaners at TGS, and we would definitely like to see one of those. In our hands.%Gallery-33431%

If you regularly read this blog, then the following Namco line-up shouldn't be all that new. Namco is bringing six titles to show; these are namely: Idolmaster SP Perfect Sun, Idolmaster SP Wandering Star, Idolmaster SP Missing Moon, Macross Ace Frontier, Mobile Suit Gundam vs. Gundam and last but not least Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2. See what we mean? You've probably heard about all these before in the past few months. There doesn't seem to be any new announcements on the table -- which, we must say, is just fine. Though, it would've been way more exciting if there was some mysterious project being worked on ... something like this morning's unannounced Sony games.

Tokyo Game Show is just around the corner. We're expecting some new game announcements -- however, we may have gotten a small sneak peak thanks to an early update of Koei's TGS website. Not only did it show a brand new Dynasty Warriors game for the PS3, it also shows a new MMORPG for both PC and PS3. Both listings for these PS3 games have since been removed, but we'll be keeping a keen eye on Koei at TGS to see if these titles magically reappear.[Via NeoGAF]

  • Rumor: Team ICO reveals The Queen, all bow down

The third project from the "Olympic Team" behind both Shadow of the Colossus and Ico looks like it might make its long anticipated reveal next month at the 2008 Tokyo Game Show. What appears to be a newly launched TGS teaser website calls the game ICO 3 The Queen, adding that Japanese PS3 owners will be able to yank the title off store shelves on October 9, 2009.Given the name, as well as the site's reuse of the original game's logo, it remains unclear if the title will be any sort of direct follow up to the original Ico or another stand alone project, but whatever the case we cannot wait to find out more once TGS gets underway.Note: As some have pointed out, the site's validity is suspect, meaning we now wait until next month's TGS to see if in fact the next game from Team ICO will make an appearance or simply break our hearts.[Thanks pico!]

  • Square Enix Wii-free at TGS

    by

    09.08.2008

Square Enix announced their Tokyo Game Show lineup over the weekend. Square Enix has traditionally been one of the biggest supporters of the DS, with the Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy spinoffs and remakes, and new franchises like Sigma Harmonics, Nanashi no Game, and The World Ends with You. Most importantly, they've got the new Dragon Quest IX on the way. That will be available in trailer form at this year's TGS.But as for the Wii, Square Enix has been a bit more restrained in their releases. Dragon Quest Swords, Chocobo's Dungeon, and My Life as a King are the only Wii games from the company to be released; all that's pending is a Soul Eater action game. That trend doesn't appear to be changing any time soon, as the company's TGS lineup is completely devoid of any Wii games, including that Soul Eater game. It's possible that they're saving some new Wii games for announcement during the show, or they'll surprise everyone with a not-dead Crystal Bearers, but, for now, it appears that if you want to play Square Enix games, you should invest in a DS.

Square Enix has posted its lineup for this year's show, and we're a little saddened to see Final Fantasy XIII (PS3) still not playable. In the midst of GDC comes word from Japan that this year's Tokyo Game Show has been dated. Get ready for October 9 to 12 at the usual home of Makuhari Messe in Chiba City. Organizers have already announced this year's theme: "Ready for GAME Time!" (sic). As opposed to every other year when they were just practicing for game time. Seriously, we're having a hard time grasping at this one. Previous themes include "Link up, Reach out, To the World" (2007) and "New Excitement. New Sensations. A New Generation" (2006).
