The Golden Compass was a critical flop, but thankfully Philip Pullman's epic trilogy of fantasy books, His Dark Materials, is being given another shot on TV. The BBC has commissioned an eight-part series based on the complete works, which will be made in Wales by Bad Wolf and New Line Cinema. The story begins with Lyra, an orphan that lives in a parallel world and finds herself swept up in a mystery surrounding strange "Dust" particles. She eventually encounters Will, a boy from our world, and the pair go on an epic adventure spanning countless cities and creatures. A TV mini-series should give the producers more space to explore the characters and their relationships. One concern, however, is the budget -- aside from Doctor Who, the BBC hasn't delivered many fantasy TV shows on the level of, say, Game of Thrones. His Dark Materials covers a dizzying number of worlds that, without the proper funding, could be rather tricky to pull off.

I recall seeing Philip Pullman's trilogy under many a desk during my stay in elementary and middle school. The first book, The Golden Compass, is finally getting a movie and with it, a game. Sega is in charge, so we know we'll either get a quality product or a rush-job that has poor ... everything. It's hit or miss with Sega. For the game, Sega is sticking close to the screenplay adaptation and not the novel itself. Oh well. Book enthusiasts will say the book was better regardless. You get to play as the main character Lyra as well as a warrior polar bear she befriends. We've got a few screenshots for you to gander at, if you'd like. From the looks of it, the game really seems to have based itself off of the engine used in the Narnia games. Not that it's bad -- but it's going to be similar to that, we'd surmise. Expect it to appear on every system known to man, also.

Fans of book to movie to game adaptations, are you going to wet your pants when you hear this news! Sega has let everyone know that they are releasing a game based on The Golden Compass film adaptation. The game is being developed by Shiny Entertainment (who are also working on the Earthworm Jim PSP title) and will feature the likenesses of the film's cast. You'll play as Lyra and her animal friends Pan and lorek Byrnison. The gameplay consists of using special items and sneakiness when playing Lyra and more head-on physical attacks with lorek. The game will span 13 environments based on areas from the movie as well as some areas that aren't featured in the film. I really have no idea what to expect of this title, but I used to love Shiny's games back in the day, so I can only hope this and Earthworm Jim are good fun. We'll find out for sure when The Golden Compass game is released this fall. [Via Gamespot ]
