With Time Warner Cable blasting out quite a few new HD channels of late, folks in Green Bay / Appleton, Wisconsin are probably feeling a bit left out. After today, we have all ideas they'll still feel slighted, but at least they can frown and grumble while watching one of two new HD channels. Effective immediately, subscribers in the area can tune into National Geographic HD and History Channel HD on slots 723 and 724, respectively. Here's to hoping for a few more up your way, eh? • Digital realignment in Ohio could wreak havoc on TWC DVRs

Although Time Warner has been handing out heaps of HD channels in the state of Ohio here lately, some subscribers could face a few headaches in the coming days. As of this week, the carrier is realigning its digital channels in order to "create a uniform lineup across all of its systems, including those it acquired from Adelphia." Unfortunately for customers, this means that they'll have to reprogram their DVR to record shows / series after the changes occur, and worse, it could affect some of the content already on there. When asked if the change would erase stored programs, a TWC spokesman (unsurprisingly) replied: "We're not sure." Weirder still, the company has actually gone so far as to post a how-to guide of transferring saved television shows from your DVR onto another medium (VHS, DVD, etc.), and it's encouraging subscribers to do so to ensure they don't lose any content. Um, thanks? [Disclosure: Engadget is part of the Time Warner family]

Finally, Time Warner Cable subscribers in the Syracuse region can indulge in a few new HD options of their own. It's about time too, seeing that Rochester, Albany and a slew of areas around NYC (Manhattan notwithstanding) have been getting their share of late. Nevertheless, the cable carrier has announced today that four more HD options will be joining the EPG: Discovery HD (819), TLC HD (825), Animal Planet HD (831) and Science Channel HD (832). According to Time Warner spokesperson Jeff Unaitis, the "recent launch of switched-digital technology is allowing [the firm] to reclaim bandwidth and to add more content," so we're instantly curious to know if CableCARD users in the area are able to tune in to these additions.

Make no mistake, Time Warner Cable is showing the great state of Ohio some serious love. Just days after four new HD channels were announced for the Columbus market and four others arrived in Cleveland, e-mails are now being received by TWC subscribers in the Dayton / Cincinnati region that confirm National Geographic HD and FSN Ohio HD are on the way. Yep, starting on March 25th, customers in the aforementioned locales will see Nat Geo HD on slots 757 (Dayton) / 983 (Cincy) and FSN Ohio HD on channel 768 (Dayton) / 968 (Cincy). Alright TWC, enough with pampering Ohio -- you've plenty of other markets to service, too. [Disclosure: Engadget is part of the Time Warner family][Thanks, Dayton Guy]

Just over a month after Clevelanders were told of four new HD channels that are coincidentally launching on Time Warner Cable today, the folks down in Buckeye country now have four of their own to look forward to. Yep, Columbus-area residents can get prepared for the addition of Sports Time Ohio HD (Ch. 752; presumably the full-time edition), National Geographic HD (Ch. 761), A&E HD (Ch. 766) and HGTV HD (Ch. 768). According to a notice on the carrier's website, these four newcomers are slated to hit sometime this month, but word from Columbus says that TWC has already been airing an ad boasting that A&E HD would arrive on the 18th. 03.04.2008

Just days after we learned of a few channel transformations coming up in the TWC New York / New Jersey markets, along comes word that quite a few other alterations are in the pipeline. For starters, HD VOD is slated to launch on May 15th in Staten Island (which currently has an "all digital" system), and other markets (Brooklyn / Queens, Manhattan, Hudson Valley and New Jersey) should receive the service before the end of Q3 2008. Additionally, Start Over and Quick Clips will reportedly be coming to all of the aforementioned systems on July 1st, but a soft launch is apt to sneak in a month prior. Still not enough? No worries -- Time Warner will also be busting out a new service dubbed Virtual Video Store, which will supposedly offer up a library of older movies for rent at just $1.99 apiece. Now, let's see if TWC delivers, shall we? [Disclosure: Engadget is part of the Time Warner family]

We're not certain if this change will affect more than a few key areas of New York and New Jersey (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Bergen, Mt. Vernon and Hudson Valley to be precise), but Fox Sports Net New York is set to become MSG Plus in mid-March. As expected, FSN NY HD will also become MSG Plus HD, but channel slots on TWC aren't expected to change. Around the same time, YES HD in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island will be relocating from channel 730 to 753, while NY1 HD gets added to the Time Warner Cable lineup in Woodside and Staten Island (only, unfortunately) on slot 701. For subscribers on Staten Island, you can also look forward to seeing Discovery HD (766), Animal Planet HD (786), TLC HD (752) and Science Channel HD (755). Needless to say, Manhattan gets the proverbial shaft yet again, but we'll keep you posted if things change. [Disclosure: Engadget is part of the Time Warner family]

  • TWC transitioning three HD channels in Albany to SDV, CableCARD users out of luck

    02.27.2008

Uh oh, here we go again. Earlier this month, we heard a chorus of complaints from CableCARD Bright House customers that had four of their HD channels snatched out from under them, and now it looks like Time Warner Cable subscribers in Albany, New York will soon be dealing with the same. According to a recent note sent out to CableCARD users, the carrier plans to start delivering TBS HD, A&E HD and Universal HD via switched digital video (SDV) on March 18th. Considering that we're still waiting for support for SDV on CableCARD devices, TWC is advising these users to come on in and join the dark side -- er, pick up one of its own HD set-top-boxes that can handle two-way services (which SDV is). So, here's your options: concede and pick up a box (if only temporarily) from TWC, or stick with your CableCARD setup and go without this trio. Check the full letter after the jump. 02.23.2008

After Time Warner Cable apparently pulled a fast one on subscribers in Queens and Brooklyn, NY by advertising its Woodside additions to the rest of the community -- but then not following through -- we've pictorial evidence that those newcomers are indeed making their way around. 'Course, it's a few weeks later than expected, but we suppose it's better than CNN HD, MHD, History Channel HD, A&E HD, Food Network HD, Lifetime Movies HD, HGTV HD, Versus / Golf HD and NHL Network HD not making the rounds. As of now, we're seeing that the channels have indeed been added to the EPG, but there's no video to go along just yet. Still, we're expecting 'em to go live anytime, so hold tight and keep an eye on your set. [Disclosure: Engadget is part of the Time Warner family][Thanks, Vin P.]Update: As of February 29th, the channels have been removed from the EPG in Queens / Brooklyn. The latest word from TWC is "coming soon." Bummer.

Starz Edge, Comedy, and Kids & Family all went HD last summer, but of course, it's up to your carrier to actually get on the ball and snatch up what's out there. Thankfully for those in the capital city of New York, the trio is finally available to you on Time Warner Cable. More specifically, subscribers can catch Starz Comedy HD on channel 1892, Starz Kids & Family HD on 1893 and Starz Edge HD on 1894. A small upgrade, sure, but a welcome one nonetheless. Nothing too groundbreaking here, but for fans of Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel, you can rest assured that it'll remain on Time Warner Cable systems for awhile longer. Reportedly, the cable operator has just renewed its distribution agreement with Crown Media Holdings for "a multi-year term." Under the new deal, TWC "will have the right to continue its distribution of Hallmark Channel as well as the opportunity for distribution of both the standard-definition and high-definition versions of Hallmark Movie Channel." If you'll recall, we were previously left in the dark as to where HMC HD would actually launch -- now, it seems we have our answer. If only things were this easy with NFL Network... Over the past few weeks, Time Warner Cable has gifted subscribers in the San Antonio area with a whole slew of new HD options, and unsurprisingly, we heard quite a bit of grumbling from Austin-area folks who felt slighted. Apparently, TWC has heard your cries, as it is now looking to add Discovery HD, TLC HD, Animal Planet HD and Science HD real soon. As for Austin, you can look for these newcomers on slots 1618, 1615, 1622 and 1624, respectively, while Waco-area residents need to scroll on up to 1042, 1044, 1045 and 1046. Of course, these aren't set to go live until Tuesday, but at least you're getting some semblance of respect, right? [Disclosure: Engadget is part of the Time Warner family][Thanks, Jon K. and Jay]

Look out, Comcast -- Time Warner Cable is loosing Start Over service in South Carolina, which will enable those in that division (along with six others) to restart high-definition shows that are already in progress. 'Course, the introduction here is a few months behind schedule, but apparently, the cable operator is planning to have the feature rolled out across all of its 23 divisions before 2009 dawns. Additionally, it's being reported that TWC has "deals in place to carry 53 HD channels, with agreements pending for another 20." As if that weren't enough, there's also plans to complement those offerings with even more HD VOD. Unsurprisingly, it seems as if the firm will be relying quite heavily on switched digital video (SDV) to free up the bandwidth for all this high-def goodness, and it's even hoping to go all digital in markets where "digital service penetration makes it relatively easy to polish off the transition." If you're one that handles teasing admirably, hit up the read link for even more foreshadowing. [Disclosure: Engadget is part of the Time Warner family]

Particularly of late, cable television providers have been bullying each other on the air and proudly proclaiming superiority in the high-definition department. One would immediately assume that there's some black and white somewhere in this equation, but honestly, things are pretty gray. Hard though it may be to believe, there actually isn't a clear cut answer to this week's Ask Engadget HD question, which comes to us from the bewildered mind of Brian: "I want an unbiased opinion, and more importantly, the facts. DISH Network is looking more and more like the leading HD provider with its weekly HD additions this past fall. However, now my local cable provider, Comcast, is running ads stating that it has More, More, More HD. My question is simple: who has more HD channels including and not including HD VOD?"The inability to find a clear cut answer hasn't stopped us from forging ahead in the past, and it won't be slowing us down today, either. Ready to plunge deep into the increasingly murky waters of HD offerings? Join us after the jump as we take a critical look at high-def options from DirecTV, DISH Network, Verizon, AT&T and a slew of traditional cable operators in order to best address the above inquiry.

Regrettably, Clevelanders (and most others in Northeast Ohio) will have to wait a month longer before getting to view four new high-definition channels through Time Warner Cable, but at least you've got four new reasons to make it through February, right? According to a legal notice posted on the carrier's website, A&E HD, Food Network HD, HGTV HD and History Channel HD will be added to the lineup as of March 4th, and apparently, a number of channel positions that you may be used to could be shifting around as well. Keep an eye on your listings, however -- these four newcomers just might show up earlier than anticipated. [Disclosure: Engadget is part of the Time Warner family][Thanks, Roosevelt]

Although it seems as if the HD expansion craze is still tiptoeing around Manhattan, those situated in Rochester, New York are certainly enjoying a pair of newcomers on Time Warner Cable. Effectively immediately, TBS HD and National Geographic HD are live and ready for viewing on channels 1049 and 1055, respectively, and while we're not told exactly what other high-definition additions will come later this year, a recent e-mail sent out to call centers does make mention that more could be (and should be) on the way soon.
