Every week, WoW Insider brings you Lichborne for blood, frost, and unholy death knights. Join World of Warcraft's first hero class as we head into a new expansion and shed the new kid on the block label. With 4.1 on the PTR, I've been hearing the usual grumbling. Why should we raid anymore? We'll just wait for the next tier of raiding and get all new good stuff. This argument always sort of strikes me as a little bit off, but it definitely doesn't apply to this patch. Not only is patch 4.1 heroic gear only going to be item level 353, but we won't get a new raiding tier until patch 4.2. That means you probably have multiple months left in which the best gear still comes from raiding tier 11 content. With that in mind, this week we'll look at all the item level 359 gear available in game and figure out what's best for the up-and-coming DPS death knight. This guide will primarily cover raid gear and valor point purchases, with BoE world drops and crafting and reputation purchases where they seem to fit well into the hierarchy of what to wear.

  • Valor point conversion, arena season 10 delayed until patch 4.2

With the news that we're not getting any raid content in patch 4.1, it makes sense that we won't see a new tier of gear anywhere else, but CM Zarhym confirmed it recently in another post: We won't see either arena season 10 or the conversion of existing valor points to justice points in patch 4.1. This, of course, makes sense. The new gear coming out of Zul'Aman and Zul'Gurub won't be a completely new tier but will instead be item level 353, leaving the item level 359, 372, and 379 stuff coming out of the current raids as the supreme goal. With this in mind, bypassing raid content by making new valor point gear or a new level of arena gear would sort of throw game balance and content a bit out out of whack. Patch 4.2 will supposedly be on the PTR soon after patch 4.1 launches, so hopefully everyone chomping at the bit for a new arena season or new stuff to save up valor points for won't have to wait too long.

Blizzard recently announced the justice and valor point amounts for all types of raid and heroic content for Cataclysm. Justice and valor points are replacing the current badge/emblem system, allowing players to purchase items and gear for points. When a new tier of raid content is launched, valor points become justice points, reducing the emblem clutter that had been so rampant in Wrath of the Lich King. A new beta build was made available last night, and with it, two new vendors located in Stormwind, in the command center found within the Old Town. In preparation for Cataclysm, patch 4.0.1 will bring with it a major gear currency change. These changes do away with the badge system we have now and instead replace them with a point system. Here's a reminder of the breakdown: Justice points low-tier, easy-to-get PvE points that will buy gear (like Emblems of Triumph are now) Valor points high-tier, harder-to-get PvE points that will buy gear (like Emblems of Frost are now) Honor points low-tier, easy-to-get PvP points that will buy PvP gear (like normal honor points are now) Conquest points high-tier, harder-to-get PvP points that will buy PvP gear (like arena points are now) The two new vendors sell all manner of new items, with ilvl346 gear sold by the justice quartermaster and ilvl359 gear sold by the valorous quartermaster. The valorous quartermaster also appears to sell our tier 11 gear. While not all graphics are updated at this time, you can start to get an idea of the level of stats we can expect to see on the gear. • Craig Morrison's latest AoC letter discusses guild features in Update 6

As July is coming to a close, Age of Conan's game director Craig Morrison has weighed in with his letter to the community for the month. The biggest discussion point this time around is a new 'Guild Renown' system that will be introduced with the next major content patch, Update 6. This system will allow members of a guild to contribute to its reputation on two separate scales. A guild's Renown Level will be increased by members earning Valor points (from PvE activities like questing and killing NPCs), Glory points (PvP) and Artisan points (crafting). Higher Renown Levels will mean access to better guild city vendors and other bonuses -- even a brand new building type that Morrison does not elaborate on in this letter.
