Earlier this week, PlanetSide 2 unveiled a video of the Terran Republic's Black Widow Company showing off how they roll. If you favor the Terran Republic, that's obviously a good thing. If you're more in line with the Vanu Sovereignty, then you'll be very happy to know that the newest video from Sony Online Entertainment features the Azure Twilight outfit showing how they rock the battle for planetary dominance Vanu-style. Even with only a short time left before the game goes live on November 20th, the developers are still looking for new videos of groups taking the battle to their enemies with a full dose of factional pride. Still, the Vanu can take heart in knowing that this time, they're second to none in the "looking dangerous while set to aggressive music" category. So jump on past the break and fly your flags, Vanu players. (New Conglomerate players are allowed to scowl in irritation at being last.) [Source: SOE press release]

  • SOE releases second PlanetSide 2 short story

Sony Online Entertainment is kicking the publicity machine for PlanetSide 2 into high gear lately. The only problem is that all the PR has nothing to do with the actual game. Yes, shooters can have lore (Global Agenda has quite an extensive backstory, for example), and SOE seems determined to keep its Forgelight-powered MMOFPS in the news without revealing much more about the mechanics. The latest salvo comes courtesy of celebrated comic scribe Marv Wolfman, who is busily creating PlanetSide 2's factional history via a series of short story vignettes. Today's reveal, the second in a series, centers on characters from the Vanu Sovereignty, some of whom buy into the faction's zealotry. "Today we have declared our Sovereignty, a Vanu Sovereignty. Only one force can live on Auraxis, and it must be us," one of them declares. You can read the full text at the official PlanetSide 2 website, and don't forget to check out our exclusive Wolfman interview from earlier this week.

  • Coloring inside the lines: An interview with PlanetSide 2's Tramell Isaac

I think we're all allowed our moments of pure geek squeeing when we bump into the people responsible for some of our favorite video games of yesteryear. So I had to apologize to Tramell Isaac in advance for gushing over his work on the first two Fallout titles, games that are among my all-time favorites. He didn't seem to mind, and he spent a few minutes shooting the breeze about his favorite designs in the game -- designing Robobrain and the Vault Boy cards that accompanied the player perks. MMO fans will probably best know Isaac from his work on the original PlanetSide, a project that is near and dear to his heart. Sony Online Entertainment brought him back on board to be the senior art director for PlanetSide 2. This makes sense -- after all, who else would best know how to evolve the series' design than the guy who started it? Isaac was kind enough to sit down on the phone with me to talk about how PlanetSide 2's visuals are shaping up, following his own blog post on the subject. Hit the jump to find out why each faction is going with a very specific color scheme, how microtransactions will affect how awesome you look, and just what Batman has to do with any of it.
