var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/nintendo_wii/Top_20_Most_Popular_Virtual_Console_Titles'; One of the most interesting new features of the newly-updated Wii firmware is the ability to see a list of popular Virtual Console games for your region. Now that there's a decent number of Virtual Console games, we can imagine having a hard time making a selection. Siliconera's Spencer Yip has provided both the Japanese top 20 (left) and the US top 20 (right) for comparison. We don't know exactly how the popularity of these games is determined. As Spencer mused, "It's not clear if these games are popular because they are the top selling Virtual Console games, most browsed games this month or most loved by the Nintendo staff (unlikely!)" What is clear is that the list is frequently updated. We found that some of the games had shifted around from their positions on Siliconera's list. Star Fox 64 and Shining Force, for example, swapped places, and Wave Race 64 and Zelda II have replaced Kirby's Dream Course and Excitebike. We couldn't be more excited about daily Virtual Console charts! Even if they show a disappointing lack of Devil's Crush on both sides.

No, Marty and the Doc weren't messing around with the space-time continuum again, but advertisements for the Wii and DS are appearing in Wave Race 64, the 1996 Nintendo 64 racing title, which was made available on the Virtual Console this morning. The simple ads appear as banners alongside the courses in the game, replacing the Kawasaki ads which appeared in the original title. Most likely, whatever licensing deal Nintendo made with Kawasaki in the 90s has since expired, and they needed to replace those textures with something else for legal reasons. Still, it's a little odd seeing ads for brand new systems in a two-generations-old game. It does prove, however, that Nintendo is able to swap out textures in the VC roms. Here's hoping they don't get all evil with the practice.

This week caught us by surprise. We never knew such an outstanding title would be falling on our laps. It brings back many a fond memory, for us, this racing on the waves. So, be sure to note that our video is chock full of footage for that title. That's not to say the others get kicked to the side. It's more of a gentle shoving.

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/nintendo_wii/Virtual_Console_Wave_Racer_64_gets_new_ads_for_DS_and_Wii'; Reader Mike writes in to tell us of a DS Lite ad appearing in one of this week's new Virtual Console releases: Wave Race 64. As you can see above, an ad for the DS Lite is featured. Mike informs us, however, that other ads for the Wii are also included. Advertising your own console in a game that it is currently being played on? We don't know, that just sounds kind of like some other company to us.Hit up the gallery below for more images.%Gallery-5615%

Action gamers and masochists (two sets whose Venn diagram, we imagine, contains a fairly large intersect) will be very happy with today's Japanese Virtual Console update, which provides one of the most painfully, awesomely difficult action games we can think of. Seriously, good luck holding on to that golden armor long enough to actually use some magic. Oh, also there's another N64 game, which is something of a rare event! This week's Virtual Console releases are: Dai Makaimura (Ghouls & Ghosts) (Mega Drive, 1 player, 600 Wii Points) Wave Race 64 (Nintendo 64, 1-2 players, 1000 Wii Points) Power League 4 (PC Engine, 1-4 players, 600 Wii Points)
