  • Do WoW players make bad employees?

William Dobson over at our sister site Massively.com picked up this story earlier today. A poster on the f13 forums revealed that a corporate recruiter claimed they'd been given specific instructions to not consider World of Warcraft players for jobs. And we're not talking here about people actively playing WoW at work -- just whether the person plays the MMO at all. The theory behind using WoW play as a disqualifier is that WoW players are somehow unable to focus 100% on their day job. There's part of me here that wants to say "screenshots or it didn't happen," since I can't imagine many corporations spending time and effort weeding out WoW players. I could see one or two HR folks preaching "Addiction!" and otherwise chewing on bitter apples. But several companies independently telling that to their recruiting folks, of their own volition and without prompt? I'm not so sure. If this recruiter is being honest with the forum goer, then I'd guess the recruiter her/himself is responsible for the WoW player ban. Of course, that being said, I'll acknowledge this comes after the FCC commissioner claimed WoW can cause college drop outs. Maybe this recruiter happened to be talking to someone who had just heard her speech. But, still, I'm not convinced there's need to be worried about corporate conspiracies looking to pit WoW players into joblessness.

WoW players have been known to spend quite a bit time donating to charity. Salahdin of Underscore on Lothar has come up with a unique way to encourage that public service. Though he doesn't outright say he's suffering from pre-expansion burnout, Salahdin does say that he doesn't play like he used to. And, he's got extra gold sitting around. With that in mind, Salahdin found a unique thing to do with it. He challenges folks to get a picture of themselves doing charitable service to others. If you can't get a picture, write a 100 word essay about what you did. Post it to the forum, and he'll reward you 100 gold in game. His premise is that instead of grinding gold for an hour, he's paying you to do something good for the world. It's a dang impressive idea, and I wish I had the extra cash around to do it myself. While the cynic in me worries that this might not be for real, the starry-eyed optimist is grateful to see a little goodness from this little corner of the world. I hope he gets a lot of people taking him up on his offer.[Thanks, Abdul!]

  • Study: Not playing WoW is more relaxing than playing it

A researcher at Middlesex University in Britain has conducted a survey of World of Warcraft players, almost 300 between the ages of 12 and 83, and found that people who play the game actually feel more relaxed before and after they play the game, rather than more aggressive at either of those times. Findings were supposed to be revealed today at a conference across the pond. But from what I can tell, you can't say much more about this study than that people aren't as excited before and after playing WoW as they are while playing it. And it doesn't really take you a behavioral scientist to figure that out -- there's no way that taking a quiz given by some scientist is as exciting as, say, traversing the wastelands of the Barrens, or flying around Netherstorm. Some people have taken this as a sign that the game somehow lets you chill out or makes you less angry than other gamers or people, which may be true, but that's not what's being said here. As far as I can tell, they're just saying that you're not as excited after playing the game as you are during. Maybe this will lead to something else, but as a finding, that's not exactly a groundshaker.[Via WorldofWar.net]

  • Your favorite music

Madmarv thinks that there might be a relationship between WoW players and metal or rock music, since everyone he knows that plays the game listens to metal or rock, and lots of videos use the same. But other players quickly prove him wrong-- not everyone listens to or even likes metal or rock music. And since we've got these nifty polls, why not figure out exactly what you do all listen to?Of course, if metal/rock doesn't win (and I suspect that it won't-- my guess is you all are a pretty eclectic crowd), then the question remains just why all that crazy rock keeps showing up in your PvP vids anyway.%Poll-8623%
