Apple claims over half a billion store account holders, other big stats at WWDC
Today's Apple liveblog started with the usual dose of big numbers. The fact that there have been 50 billion app downloads from the App Store is something we already knew, and Android has almost matched, but Apple has added that it now has 575 million store account holders, choosing from a total selection of 900,000 apps, with 375,000 of those tailored specifically for the iPad. 90 percent of iOS titles are active in the sense of being downloaded each month, and they've resulted in a total of $10 billion that has so far been paid out to developers -- three times more, Tim Cook says, than all the other platforms put together. Phew. Oh, but there are more: 600 million iOS devices sold so far (that's 235 million since last year's count and, as Ryan from the Block points out, evidence of "some pretty ridiculous growth"); 300 million iCloud accounts, which apparently makes iCloud "the fastest growing cloud service ever"; 240 million Game Center users; 800 billion iMessages sent (and perhaps received); Some ridiculous number of "push notifications" that we can't fully remember except that it was in the trillions. Apple announces Anki Drive, an AI robotics app controlled through iOS
Apple is just starting its WWDC keynote this morning, but it's already announcing something quite interesting: a new company called Anki and its inaugural iOS app called Anki Drive, which centers around artificial intelligence and robotics. The name, which is Japanese for "memorize," features smart cars that are capable of driving themselves (although you can certainly take over at any time) and communicate with your iPhone using Bluetooth LE. These intelligent vehicles, when placed upon a printed race track, can sense the track up to 500 times a second. The iOS-exclusive game is available as a beta in the App Store today, which you'll need to sign up for -- the full release won't be coming until this fall -- and it's billed as a "video game in the real world." According to the developers, "the real fun is when you take control of these cars yourselves," which we can definitely attest to -- the WWDC demo cars had weapons, after all. Apple announces it has 6 million registered developers
Apple kicked off WWDC with its typical heap of numbers about the developer community, Apple retail and more. At WWDC, participants traveled from more than 66 countries to attend, with 64 percent attending for the first time. The developer program has over 6 million registered developers, with 1.5 million added in the past year. As we all remember, tickets for the conference sold out in just 71 seconds. As a result, Apple decided to make a lot of the WWDC content available online. Tim Cook then hopped into Apple retail stores and announced that 1 million people make their way into Apple Stores each day. Apple now has 407 stores are in 14 countries worldwide, with one of their newest flagship stores opening recently in Berlin. Berlin's Kurfürstendamm store is a showpiece -- it is housed in a 100 year old building that was one of the first theaters in Berlin.

Weekend Poll: Thinsperational or Ugly?
A wave-themed banner goes up at Moscone West. It joins the iOS 7 banner revealed earlier today. Beautiful? Or a horrifying glimpse of art over usability? Some are saying it means OS X will be Sea Lion. Some are saying it's just a wave. Others are speaking in hushed riddles... What does it mean? We set up a poll below so you can tell us what you think it means. Of course we'll know by next Monday, won't we? %Poll-82858% As for us, we're all about the thin. Here's our new TUAW banner, chock full of Ivedesign. (just kidding)

Apple puts up '7' banner in advance of WWDC, likely confirms new version of iOS (update: OS X too)
Well, we were pretty sure that Apple was going to out a new version of iOS next week, and a banner just went up at the Moscone Center in San Francisco (the venue for WWDC) seems to confirm the rumors. As you can see, it shows only the number '7', which all but confirms that we'll be seeing Jony Ive's first iteration of Apple's mobile OS in just a few days. Tune in to our coverage next week to check the accuracy of our deductive powers and find out what other goodies Apple has in store. Update: Our friends at 9 to 5 Mac have more pics, including photos of an ad with a big 'X' in front of a wave. That should put to rest any hopes for this being the launch of OS XI.
Apple reportedly lands radio service deal with Sony ahead of WWDC
Apple was supposedly waiting for a deal with Sony before it could launch its rumored internet radio service. That roadblock may have just been cleared: AllThingsD claims that Apple has reached an agreement at the last minute, which gives it the all clear to announce the streaming feature at WWDC. Other details aren't immediately available, but previous rumors have suggested that Apple won't deploy the ad-backed service right away; we may end up waiting a few months before we can tune in. If the rumors are true, though, Monday's keynote will be more interesting than we first thought.

Reuters: Apple to show off iRadio streaming service next week
Reuters is reporting that among the announcements we'll see at next week's WWDC keynote, Apple will introduce a new music-streaming service called iRadio. The service will be free and ad-supported, Reuters says those in the know claimed, and will feature ads from the iAds team. The service is designed to dive into the already crowded market of music-streaming services, which includes Pandora, Rdio, Spotify, Slacker Radio and a number of other sizable options. I will buy this rumor, but I don't know if Apple's plan is simply to just introduce "another" music streaming service. The company has been working hard with iCloud and iTunes Match to get you access to your music from any of your devices, and my guess is that any "iRadio" reveal would be along those lines, aimed at providing you direct access to any tunes you want to listen to from anywhere. The iAds division was of course put together for running ads on apps, but it makes sense that Apple would want an in-house solution for them to sell, so it sounds like this could work. As with all of these rumors, we won't know what's true until Apple actually takes the stage next week. But at least we don't have too much longer to wait.
TUAW TV Live: The inevitable WWDC preview show
Steve: "Let's see ... Apple's got something coming up next week... Oh, yeah -- it's WorldWide Developer Conference week! Hey, Doc, why don't we do something really original, like a WWDC preview show!" Doc: "Sure, Steve! What an original idea! Nobody has probably ever thought of that in the history of Apple podcasts!" Noooo, we didn't have that conversation, but we probably could have. So we're going to talk a bit about what to expect or not expect at WWDC, look at photos sent by readers who were walking past Moscone West today, even reminisce about WWDC events and keynotes past. You can watch it all in live streaming video here, as well as join in on the Chatroll fun. If you miss the show, it'll be embedded in this post within 24 hours and will also be on our YouTube channel.
Apple's most significant keynotes
WWDC is right around the corner and the highly anticipated keynote will kick off the event on Monday June 10. This keynote will be a critical one for Apple as the company is expected to unveil a Jonny Ive-led overhaul of iOS. Apple has a long string of game-changing presentations, including these 10 keynotes that were singled out by Macworld. On Macworld's top 10 list are the 2003 introduction of Safari, the iPad special event in 2010 and the unveiling of the iPhone at Macworld 2007. You can browse through the full list on Macworld's website and enjoy this walk down memory lane.
WWDC 2013: the rumor roundup
It's that special time for Apple devotees: WWDC 2013 is next week, and that means a customary glimpse of where iOS and the Mac are going next. However, we're getting everything but business as usual this year. The crew at 1 Infinite Loop has shaken up its software strategy, putting much of its emphasis on Jony Ive's design chops and tighter collaboration between teams. Is Apple about to deliver major OS refreshes that some say are long overdue? And what about hints of new hardware introductions at the same time? We've gathered together some of the more notable rumors to help understand what Apple may introduce on June 10th -- and what's likely to remain wishful thinking.
Bloomberg details Apple's rumored radio service, associated iAd revamp
If you believe the rumor mill, Apple is planning to announce its long-rumored streaming music service as a feature alongside the iOS 7 update during WWDC next week, and now Bloomberg has more details on how it might work. According to the report, the entire thing will be free and ad-supported, Pandora-style. It's expected to include similar features for tracking user's tastes and serving up similar songs, with tight integration to iTunes so they can buy a track if they'd like to keep it. Where a bigger change may be however is on the backend, in how Apple deals with its advertising business. A shift in iAd directed by Eddy Cue and recent hire Todd Teresi is cutting some fees out, giving advertises more flexibility in how they buy placements, and will share radio ad revenue with music labels.
Apple releases WWDC companion app ahead of next week's event
In advance of its rapidly approaching World Wide Developers Conference, Apple's just released a companion iOS app to keep attendees on the up and up. All the usual pertinent bits are included, from handy floor plans for dizzy devs navigating the crush of Moscone West to a sessions calendar that not only allows users to favorite specific events, but also provide feedback. What's more, devs won't have to worry about missing out on a particular session as Apple intends to make those available for viewing through the app. Which means you, too, can take a virtual front row seat to the reportedly "flatter" future Cook and co. have been (wait for it...) cooking up.
