  • Apple introduces new Safari for OS X Mavericks: shared links and iCloud keychain passwords

To complement its new version of OS X, Apple's also improved its native web browser, Safari. Alongside a cleaner homepage design, there's now easier access to your Reading List and a new shared link function that'll tie into sites that others have sent to you. On the technical side, there's javascript improvements, a new shared memory resource cache, plus power-saving improvements and background tab optimizations. According to Apple, the new version will apparently use one third of the energy it takes to power Firefox and significantly bests even Chrome on Javascript benchmark tests. Better still, iCloud keychain will now hold onto your passwords, credit cards and WiFi logins -- all within Safari. In fact, the browser will even auto-suggest passwords. "A super-secure one," apparently, but if you're using Apple's web browser (with the new iCloud keychain support) forgetting it won't even be an issue. Tim Cook has just announced that 28 million copies of Mountain Lion have been shipped to date, making it the best-selling OS X ever. The Mac now has a user base of 72 million people, and 35 percent of these Mac users are running OS X 10.8. "The Mac business has out-paced the PC business for several years now," said Apple CEO Tim Cook, making the MacBook the No. 1 US notebook and the iMac the No. 1 US desktop.

Tim Cook has just announced that over 50 billion apps have been downloaded from the App Store. The store now has over 900,000 apps, with 375,000 of those apps iPad-only. Currently there are over 575 million iTunes accounts. Cook has also announced that over $10 billion has been paid out to developers -- $5 billion of that within the last 12 months. That's three times more than all other platforms combined.

After reaching what could have been the tenth big cat iteration of OS X, Apple has announced a new series. It'll be basing the next versions of its computer operating system on California, with the first iteration known as Mac OS X Mavericks. %Gallery-190858% Follow all of our WWDC 2013 coverage at our event hub.

  • Apple unveils its latest desktop operating system: OS X Mavericks, coming this fall

Developer conferences have taken a turn in recent years, becoming as much an opportunity for companies to interact with the dev community as a platform for launching hardware outside larger all-industry shows. This year's WWDC, however, has been all about the software thus far. Apple has, as anticipated, given the world its first glimpse of its latest desktop operating system. The Mountain Lion followup shifts away from the big cat naming, to a California-themed release: Mavericks, paying homage to the giant wave surfing spot. The first new feature is finder tabs: a browser-like system based in windows. Just add a tab by clicking plus in a window. You can also finally take the Finder full-screen. Also new, tagging. You can tag files based on location and other details, making them much searchable. There's a tagging sidebar that'll let you view them all in one handy place. Multiple Displays got a big cheer as well, letting you view menus across screens, viewing different apps in full screen mode on each display. You can independently pan on displays as well, and AirPlay connected HDTVs work a full, connected display. Apple showed off the new functionality to big cheers in the developer-packed room. %Gallery-190911% Follow all of our WWDC 2013 coverage at our event hub.

  • Tim Cook: 28 million copies of Mountain Lion shipped, more than any other Mac release

Cupertino has been known to share a stat or two during its WWDC keynotes, so it's hardly a surprise that the company just dropped some sales figures for its Mountain Lion. According to Tim Cook, 28 million copies of the OS have shipped, making it the best-selling Mac release of all time. Cook also said that about 35 percent of users have updated, compared to less than five percent for Windows 8. And Apple wasn't just talking Mountain Lion to brag; those numbers were part of a build-up to announcing the latest desktop-based software: OS X Mavericks. Hit up that link for more info. • Apple claims over half a billion store account holders, other big stats at WWDC

Today's Apple liveblog started with the usual dose of big numbers. The fact that there have been 50 billion app downloads from the App Store is something we already knew, and Android has almost matched, but Apple has added that it now has 575 million store account holders, choosing from a total selection of 900,000 apps, with 375,000 of those tailored specifically for the iPad. 90 percent of iOS titles are active in the sense of being downloaded each month, and they've resulted in a total of $10 billion that has so far been paid out to developers -- three times more, Tim Cook says, than all the other platforms put together. Phew. Oh, but there are more: 600 million iOS devices sold so far (that's 235 million since last year's count and, as Ryan from the Block points out, evidence of "some pretty ridiculous growth"); 300 million iCloud accounts, which apparently makes iCloud "the fastest growing cloud service ever"; 240 million Game Center users; 800 billion iMessages sent (and perhaps received); Some ridiculous number of "push notifications" that we can't fully remember except that it was in the trillions. • Apple announces it has 6 million registered developers

Apple kicked off WWDC with its typical heap of numbers about the developer community, Apple retail and more. At WWDC, participants traveled from more than 66 countries to attend, with 64 percent attending for the first time. The developer program has over 6 million registered developers, with 1.5 million added in the past year. As we all remember, tickets for the conference sold out in just 71 seconds. As a result, Apple decided to make a lot of the WWDC content available online. Tim Cook then hopped into Apple retail stores and announced that 1 million people make their way into Apple Stores each day. Apple now has 407 stores are in 14 countries worldwide, with one of their newest flagship stores opening recently in Berlin. Berlin's Kurfürstendamm store is a showpiece -- it is housed in a 100 year old building that was one of the first theaters in Berlin.

  • Apple announces Anki Drive, an AI robotics app controlled through iOS

Apple is just starting its WWDC keynote this morning, but it's already announcing something quite interesting: a new company called Anki and its inaugural iOS app called Anki Drive, which centers around artificial intelligence and robotics. The name, which is Japanese for "memorize," features smart cars that are capable of driving themselves (although you can certainly take over at any time) and communicate with your iPhone using Bluetooth LE. These intelligent vehicles, when placed upon a printed race track, can sense the track up to 500 times a second. The iOS-exclusive game is available as a beta in the App Store today, which you'll need to sign up for -- the full release won't be coming until this fall -- and it's billed as a "video game in the real world." According to the developers, "the real fun is when you take control of these cars yourselves," which we can definitely attest to -- the WWDC demo cars had weapons, after all. A wave-themed banner goes up at Moscone West. It joins the iOS 7 banner revealed earlier today. Beautiful? Or a horrifying glimpse of art over usability? Some are saying it means OS X will be Sea Lion. Some are saying it's just a wave. Others are speaking in hushed riddles... What does it mean? We set up a poll below so you can tell us what you think it means. Of course we'll know by next Monday, won't we? %Poll-82858% As for us, we're all about the thin. • Apple puts up '7' banner in advance of WWDC, likely confirms new version of iOS (update: OS X too)

Well, we were pretty sure that Apple was going to out a new version of iOS next week, and a banner just went up at the Moscone Center in San Francisco (the venue for WWDC) seems to confirm the rumors. As you can see, it shows only the number '7', which all but confirms that we'll be seeing Jony Ive's first iteration of Apple's mobile OS in just a few days. Tune in to our coverage next week to check the accuracy of our deductive powers and find out what other goodies Apple has in store. Update: Our friends at 9 to 5 Mac have more pics, including photos of an ad with a big 'X' in front of a wave. That should put to rest any hopes for this being the launch of OS XI.

  • Apple reportedly lands radio service deal with Sony ahead of WWDC

Apple was supposedly waiting for a deal with Sony before it could launch its rumored internet radio service. That roadblock may have just been cleared: AllThingsD claims that Apple has reached an agreement at the last minute, which gives it the all clear to announce the streaming feature at WWDC. Other details aren't immediately available, but previous rumors have suggested that Apple won't deploy the ad-backed service right away; we may end up waiting a few months before we can tune in. If the rumors are true, though, Monday's keynote will be more interesting than we first thought.
