  • Keepin' it real fake, part CLXXXIV: NOKLA E81 is a dash of this, a dash of that

No, friends -- what you see above isn't a poor spy spot of an unannounced handset sure to be unveiled in just hours at Mobile World Congress. And yes, that's despite the fact that there is still room for an E81 in Nokia's ever-expanding lineup. In reality, this shoddy impostor is some sort of NOKLA, which appears to be a distasteful combination of XpressMusic, the N79 and the 6208 classic (among others, we imagine). The good news is that it sports dual SIM slots, a quad-band GSM radio and a 2.8-inch touchscreen. The bad worse news is that you probably won't even be able to read the menus after dropping $86.50 and bringing this home.

  • Nokia's 5630 XpressMusic hits the FCC

Been hankering for a low-end Nokia XpressMusic device in a familiar and unthreatening form factor? Then you might want to check in with the 5630, a candybar the company just shuttled off to the FCC for review (and dissection, if these pictures are any indication). In case you forgot, the device will sport a 3.2 megapixel camera with built-in flash, GPS, S60 3rd Edition (a personal fave of Engadget Mobile), and the "active toolbar" which we've seen more recently on the Tube... er, 5800 XpressMusic. The phone also supports N-gage games, and though we've been led to understand the device rocks an HSDPA / HSUPA radio, the manual up on the FCC's site only mentions GPRS and EDGE connectivity. For now we'll just assume that some kind of crazy joke (or typical US neutering of Nokia handsets). Check a pic of the gutted device after the break, and hit the read link for the full Commission rundown.[Via Electronic Pulp]

There are already plenty of ways to get an American E63, so don't pay too much attention to the phone on the left here -- but the 5800 XpressMusic... well, that's another story altogether. As rumored, the version of the S60 5th Edition handset with North American 3G is running $399 -- though a promotion on the Nokia site knocks 10 percent off of that right from the get-go. No ship date is listed (we're still hoping to see it later this month), so fair warning: all you'll really be doing here is getting in line and hoping that nothing at MWC this week cools you to the 5800's wiles.[Via The Nokia Blog]

We've already gotten the official rundown on Nokia's slim new 5630 XpressMusic handset, but nothing completes a cellphone launch like a video of the phone being flipped around atop a makeshift backdrop, and Nokia's Conversations blog has thankfully come through in this case. As you can glimpse above, this one includes a dual-LED flash to complement the 3.2 megapixel camera, and the rest of the specs are certainly none too shabby for an S60 candybar, including HSDPA and HSUPA connectivity, an included 4GB microSD card, stereo Bluetooth and, last but not least, a 3.5mm headphone jack. Head on past the break for the video, or hit up the read link below to check out a higher quality version.[Via SlashGear]

Like Symbian candybars? Then try this surprising little number, the 5630 XpressMusic. Nokia's 5800-sib is an N-Gage ready, 12-mm slimster with a 4GB microSD card dropped in the box along side a standard 3.5-mm headphone jack to rock whatever buds, plugs, or cans you have an itch for. It's also packing a 3.2 megapixel, "4x zoom" camera with dual-LED flash and HSDPA/HSUPA data to move your pics and videos up to your favorite photo sharing site on a rocket. Dedicated audio keys and Nokia's "say and play" feature makes the 5630 a media all-rounder. Expected in Q2 for around €200 pre-tax, pre-subsidy.

  • Nokia 5800 launching in North American flavor this month for $399?

Unlocked European 5800s are still occasionally trickling into Nokia's Chicago and New York flagship stores, but you might want to hold off on taking the plunge if you spend more than a few passing minutes in the New World each month. The Nokia Blog is reporting that the remixed North American version of Nokia's first S60 5th Edition device will drop somewhere around February 26 for an MSRP of $399 -- though retailers can naturally charge less if they're feeling generous. Interestingly, we checked in with the stores last week about this very phone and were quoted "sometime in the second quarter" for launch -- but then again, we wouldn't put it past a site called The Nokia Blog be a little more attuned to the situation, if you know what we're saying.

  • Nokia ships one millionth 5800 XpressMusic, does a little dance

Okay, so we're going on the assumption that the 500,000 figure uttered by Nokia CEO Olli Pekka Kallasvuo during this week's Q4 earnings call was a touch old -- you know, considering that the outfit is now trumpeting the shipment of a cool million. Following a (very!) successful UK launch, Nokia has just shipped its one millionth Tube, which is the handset maker's first mass market touchscreen device. And to think -- it hasn't even debuted in many corners of the globe yet.

  • Nokia ships half a million 5800 XpressMusic handsets in 30 days

If this were coming from any other mouth, we'd definitely second guess it. As it stands, though, it's hard to dispute the words of Nokia's CEO when it comes to matters involving Nokia. Mr. Olli Pekka Kallasvuo stated rather proudly during the firm's Q4 results call that it had shipped just over 500,000 5800 XpressMusic mobiles (better known as the Tube) in just 30 days. That figure becomes even more impressive when you realize that shipments only occurred in select markets, though it should be noted that "units shipped" and "units sold to end users" could indeed be very different things. Still, half a million in just a month ain't too shabby in today's economy, so here's the kudos you're clearly due, Nokia.

    01.19.2009

Well, hello there 5730 XpressMusic, so nice to finally meet you! This admittedly odd looking Nokia has been brought to our attention courtesy of Russia's own Mobile-Review, and while we're still trying to decide whether or not the QWERTY slide-out keyboard is a turn off or totally awesome (with its dot matrix-styled font), we figured it prudent to pass along the information, anyway. Said mobile sports a 2-inch QVGA screen, backlit keys, a 1,000mAh battery good for 4.5 hours of yappin', EDGE data, inbuilt GPS, 128MB of RAM, a microSD card slot, USB / Bluetooth and Symbian S60 running the show. We're told to expect it out in European markets this April for €220 ($289), though worldwide availability remains a mystery. Have a look in the read link for eleventy billion more images and a poorly translated preview.[Thanks, momchil]

You might remember (emphasis on "might") that Nokia was rumored to have a 5700 XpressMusic upgrade in the works a few months back -- 3.2 megapixel autofocus cam, larger microSD expansion limit, and that's about it. Believable if not intensely boring, right? Well, a 5710 just showed up on Nokia's US site that looks an awful lot like a black 5700, and let's be real: 5710 sounds like the right model number for an ultra-mild 5700 upgrade. No official announcement yet, but yeah, we could totally see this showing up on T-Mobile at some point this year.

The same wild and wacky Russians that demolished a Motorola ZN5 are showing the same courtesy to Nokia's 5800 XpressMusic. The so-called Crash Test involves putting Nokia's first Comes With Music-enabled handset through a litany of horrible scenes, including a stay in the local freezer, a fall from grace, a ride in the washing machine, a dip in a freshly brewed beer and, of course, a crushing blow from a vehicle. The preview video is hosted up in the read link, and the full results of how it fared are promised in the near future. Let's just say we're betting the farm it doesn't handle unlimited downloads, calls nor texts very well (read: at all) after this hellish experience.[Thanks, Adam]

So, here's what's awesome: Nokia's well received 5800 XpressMusic will be making the trip to US soil with US 3G support baked right in. Here's what's just so-so: there's no AT&T logo on the photos, so we're assuming Nokia will only be selling this one here in unlocked, unsubsidized form. Of course, we're just thrilled to know the phone will be making a proper debut in the US of A, but those looking to pick one up will certainly need to expect a lofty price tag.

    12.19.2008

Imagine this wild alternate reality where XpressMusic isn't a Nokia brand, it's a Yamaha brand; a reality where Yamaha is one of the world's largest cellphone manufacturers, has no taste, and decides you need some serious audio firepower attached to the back of your handset. This horrific scenario has been rendered real by China's Jinpeng, thanks to their S108 candybar that combines the usual array of ripped brands -- Yamaha and XpressMusic in this case -- with bizarre design decisions that you won't like see on any mainstream device. Ever. Like an array of 25 loudspeakers, for example. Amazingly, the thing's only $94, so if you're in a part of the world where GSM 900 / 1800 is good enough, it might actually be worth a shot -- just don't let Yamaha know.

As you can probably tell from the naming convention used on Nokia's 5800 XpressMusic, this here phone was designed with music playback in mind. Shocking, we know. That being the case, we're not surprised to see this here Nokia / Shure bundle surface in Hong Kong, and honestly, we're a little surprised it took this long. The special edition kit will come packaged with one handset and one set of Shure SE210 earphones, and it's expected to go on sale today for around $620. Too bad you'll have to jet to Hong Kong and drop by the currency conversion joint to actually snag one.[Via The Nokia 5800 Blog]

Nokia's 5800 XpressMusic (or the Tube, as we prefer to say) has been on sale in certain corners of the globe for a few weeks now, but the touchscreen-heavy handset has just now made itself to US soil. Sadly, it lacks the support necessary for US 3G data, but those who simply cannot wait another day can hop a flight to O'Hare (or Midway, if you please) and snap up one of the Euro versions at the Chicago flagship store. 'Course, you'll get the US warranty and all, and you'll only be asked to hand over $349.99 to take one home. As of now, only the blue variant is in stock, and the NYC store is still waiting for shipment.Update: It's available at the New York City store as well, so get your (European) S60 5.0 on, won't you?

We love covering the antics of gadget-crazed buyers on launch day as much as anyone, whether it be die-hard gamers waiting for a PS3 or international fanatics clamoring for Apple's latest. Sometimes, though, these big launch sellouts feel a bit... contrived. Such is the case with Nokia's 5800 XpressMusic, dropped first in Russia on Wednesday ahead of its worldwide release yesterday. An internal memo (conveniently posted onto the Mobile-Review forums by a Nokia employee) talks up the usual release day shenanigans: buyers camping for days, bribery attempts for spots in line, inventory disappearing in minutes, and an inevitable prediction that this thing will be bigger than the iPhone. However, while the memo liberally quotes from the LiveJournal musings of Mobile-Review editor Eldar Murtazin, it skips over one choice bit of information he provided: a measly 120 phones were available at this "flagship" location in Moscow. [Thanks, pops]

  • Nokia's 5800 XpressMusic goes on sale somewhere in the world

If you've been gritting your teeth and letting the PR onslaught of the iPhone 3G, Storm, and G1 knock you around as you waited for Nokia's entry into the widescreen, touchscreen superphone market -- that wait appears to be nearing it's end. Nokia has gone and gotten all official and release-y with it's anticipated (if somewhat disappointing) 5800 XpressMusic... or as we know it, the Tube. According to the company's PR, the device "is now, or will be soon" available in Russia, Spain, India, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Finland, "among others." If you'll recall, the phone boasts a 3.2-inch, 16:9 resistive touchscreen (hey, they throw in a guitar pick stylus), a 3.2-megapixel camera, 8GB of on-board storage, and the constant assurance that you're using a phone once called the Tube. No word on price or plans, but we expect cheap, and lots.[Thanks, Pdexter]

We've seen a review of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, and several videos of the device in action. What we haven't seen, however, is a video review... until now. Over at MobileBurn they've posted a series of four review videos of the touchscreen handset, and though it starts out a bit shaky -- the stylus is "not very good" and the build doesn't feel very "solid" -- the reviewer changes his tune by the end of the opus, and his opinion seems like it's evolved to a resounding "not bad." Hit the read link, grab a bucket of popcorn and consider yourself in for the night if you want to watch the full review.
