It looks like Zorro, that totally modern and vital character who is absolutely still relevant in 2009, will be appearing in a new DS game published by 505 Games. Zorro: Quest for Justice, released in Europe this September, was just rated by the ESRB for release in North America. This follows the May release of Destiny of Zorro on Wii -- a game first announced in early 2007, and delayed about two years. According to the content description, "Players can roam across rooftops, use a whip to swing across open gaps, and engage in sword combat with the henchmen of Luis Ramon." The rooftop business sounds Assassin's Creed-esque, possibly the same kind of 2.5D used for the DS games. In case you were wondering what the enemies in this game sound like when they die, the ESRB addressed your concerns: "their cries of pain during battle represent the most pertinent content (e.g., 'Ahhhh!' and 'Uggggh!').

  • The Destiny of Zorro still exists

We had long since forgotten about the Zorro game. Then these new screens popped up, and we, uh, forgot about it again. We'll forget about it again in a few minutes. The Destiny of Zorro follows the standard licensed 3D action/adventure game template of crate-filled locations brimming with identical henchmen. We were really hoping for something that emphasized exciting sword controls (the Zorro franchise doesn't have much cachet outside of sword stuff), and that's still a possibility -- at the very least, you'll be Z-ing all over dudes. We just don't think it's likely. If the basic game is as rote as it appears, we're not holding our breath for well-thought-out swordplay.

  • Zorro to leave his mark (exclusively) on the Wii

Between all the sword-swinging in the currently released Twilight Princess, Red Steel, and Wario Ware and more to come in planned Wii incarnations of Dragon Quest, Dynasty Warriors and Star Wars, you'd think developers would be getting a little tired of using the Wii remote to emulate a blade. Well, think again. On Friday, Zorro Productions announced that Pronto Games will be bringing the famous fictional swashbuckler to the Wii with "The Destiny of Zorro" this holiday season. Pronto President and Creative Director Randy Angle told Joystiq that they have been working on the game since last August when they got the license from Zorro Productions. Angle said the game would build off of existing Zorro properties while presenting a totally new story that gets into the origins of the character and brings the player "fully into the moment of Zorro-ness." The game is currently planned as a Wii exclusive, a decision that Angle said was predicated on the controller. "We would do a very different game if we were working on the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360," he said. Players will get to control Zorro as he uses his trademark sword and whip, according to Angle, but that the moves will most likely be linked to abstracted Wii remote motions rather than a one-to-one representation of real-world movement. "Players tend to do better and get less tired with abstraction," Angle said. "It's not a sword-fighting simulator." Pronto, which also works on Wii middleware, has already secured a publishing partner in Europe but is still looking for a stateside publisher. They hope to have the game ready for production in September in advance of an early November release. [Via VG Gen]

  • Wii Warm Up: So, Zorro

Yeah, we saw this one coming -- a Zorro game for the Wii. We can see it. The Wii remote is made for sword-fighting, and slashing the iconic "Z" with the controller is something we should all probably do once. But a whole game? We're skeptical ... and more so when it comes to the philosophy behind it. According to the developers, Pronto Games, they're trying to cram something for everyone into a small package; they want something "instantly engaging" with "challenges for casual gamers but with an interest level that will attract hard core gamers, too." While it sounds good on paper, it seems as though they're more interested in trying to please everyone than they are in just producing a good game. What's your take on this coming title?

  • Wild Hare, Alten8 to bring a bunch of crappy videos to PSP

In what might be the absolute worst idea in the history of the PSP, Wild Hare Entertainment and Alten8 have announced four movies for its PC2PSP media format. The titles are Popeye 1 and 2, Betty Boop and Zorro and His Fighting Legion Volume 1. What, could they not go the extra mile and give us Little Rascals: The Early Years? The PC2PSP files come on a disc that feature digitally boosted sound and are pre-formatted for the PSP.Earlier this month, we reported Wild Hare and Alten8's partnership to bring content to the PSP. However, I had no idea such atrocities would manifest themselves from this partnership. Unless these companies can actually bring content to us that we care about and aren't older than our grandparents, I highly doubt they'll see any success.
