Sony Ericsson GC95 PC card supports all manner of network
Next on the Sony Ericsson announcement bandwagon is the GC95 PC Card. The clear successor to the GC83, the GC95 will offer UMTS/EDGE/ GPRS connectivity for compatibility with both 3G and 2G networks around the world. The network selection is transparent, so using a UMTS network while at Heathrow in England and then EDGE at JFK in New York will not require any input from the user (as things should be). The card will run on Windows 2000, XP, and Mac OS X systems and will also include an optional external antenna for low signal areas, a design element we find rather clever.

I take it that it doesn't support Wifi, though?

What, your laptop doesn't have wifi already built in? Where have you been!?

Can someone comment on a few service providers who do or will support this?

I believe it does have Wi-Fi. I was reading about this card on the SonyEricsson UK site and it said "WiFi via SIM" which I don't quite understand, but it's there. It is really nice that they are including OS X support because if this card does have WiFi, it will provide a very nice external card data access.

When will it be available? Where? Since it's both UMTS and EDGE, it should be available both in Europe and the US. Who will be retailing it? Taking into account that the other Sony Ericsson GC89 should already be in the market by now and isn't, how reliable is the commitment to make the GC95 available by mid 2005?

I can only get a 56k (read 49K) connection where I live but towers abound and I am dying to get either the GC89 card which was to be released Q1 05 (NOT) or the 95, please oh please have mercy on me. I have seen that card and held it in my hand but nada can't even steal the thing, what gives? saylor552@hotmail.com
