SD, miniSD, and microSD
We harrassed the people at the SD Card Association yesterday (they're here in New Orleans for CTIA) and managed to come away with a pic of one of those "new" microSD flash memory cards alongside a regular SD card and a miniSD card. They announced the new microSD format yesterday, and here's the short version of what happened: TransFlash just got a brand new name.

Looks if they're about the size of current cellphone sim cards.

Although I realize these things need to be small enough to fit into ever-smaller devices, it's also worth mentioning that these new cards are so small that it's beyond easy to lose one. Imagine dropping it onto a similarly-colored or chaded carpet. Then imagine doing it at a party where there are loads of oblivious people walking around.
Great technology. Not so sure about the life-fit thing.

MiniSD is about the same size as a SIM card, micro looks tiny.

Any word on the capacity of the micro?

This is getting silly. Do we really need anything smaller than SD ?!

Shouldn't they be working on making them bigger, as in MB? Where's my 4GB SD card? Oh and make them cheaper while you're at it. To me regular SD seems like a good size. It's the size of a postage stamp - what more (or less) do you want?

microSD is too big for me. I want my nanoSD or picoSD, pleeaaaasssseee... I want to implant it to my brain and CCD/CMOS sensors to my retinas so that I have super photographic memory and don't remember anything for exams.

Yeah, they should stick with SDIO and SD until they can do everything CF can do, so I don't have to be pissed off every time I see a cool CF card and don't have a CF slot on my Palm! And these *are* way too small.

Woop dee doo.. They've had XD cards out back when the first sd card came out (From Olympus and Fuji, used in most of their digicams). The XD card is the same as that micro sd card, so what's with creating another smaller card that's the same as the XD? Just use XD technology, it's faster, and the media itself is smaller.

I just got the Motorola V980 (this is Greece :-) which uses the microSD. It's freaking small. When looking at the pics i couldn't believe it's that small until i actually hold the card in my fingers. Pics will come soon.

LOL!

I want them to make a 5 gig micro SD or such like. I would rather spend my money on a card and stick it my mobile to listen to mp3's than shell out 140 quid for a bloody ipod that after a year the battery self distruct mechanism kicks in.

This is how small this thing really is.
I did an experiment and swallowed a regular SD card. I was able to recover it (in the bathroom) after approximately 18 hours.
Then, on the following day, I swallowed a microSD card. I was not able to recover it. I went through crap looking for it and nothing.
So beware of the accidental swallowing of microSD cards. You will end up loosing them!
