Toshiba putting 4GB, 0.85-inch mini hard drive into mass production
They showed off a prototype of an MP3 player with one of these packed inside at CeBIT last month, but now Toshiba is confirming that they're going to launch mass production of their new line of 4GB, 0.85-inch mini hard drives sometime around the middle of this year. They won't name any names (of course), but they will say that they've got several customers for the new drives already lined up.

iPod micro, anyone?
4GB iPod mini vs. 4GB iPod shuffle - The ultimate battle royale for the public's love!
Wow! That makes the die look massive.
apple (cough)
I don't know what you are talking about, that looks pretty damn small to me.
Hmmm... Forget the iPod, stick that thing in a PSP!
i concur with dannymac
It'd be interesting to put those in a pair of hearing aids and record.
Yes, quickly... add it to the apple line... so the iDrones will hurry and purchase YET ANOTHER apple mp3 player, because they "need" it or because it's "really like an accessory to my OTHER iPod"...
...oh brother.
Here's a thought, maybe you iDrones can stop worrying how this can potentially impact your music-self-servicing-abilities...
...and for once marvel at how fast the tech community has forwarded technology as a whole... if you had told me a few years ago, that in the future you could fit a gig (let alone FOUR!) of data on something the size of a die (let alone the fact that it has moving parts) I would have laughed you off a cliff...
rock on Toshiba...
now if we can only improve battery life, we'll be set.
I would have paid an extra $100 for my PSP if it had one of these attached. Maybe even a full $400 dollars for PSP+4GB HD!
Hackers ahoy!!
I think if designed cleverly you could shoe-horn 3 of these into the same space as a Microdrive and create a 12gb raid array in a single CFII size package.
Why ? I dunno...why not :) ?
^^ exacly what i was thinking, i think 4 of these fit on the psp battery compartment, remove that, and add the external battery pack that fits snugly on the back of the psp and voila. movies and music on the go. (not to mention emulated games :P
very nice.
I just want one to hang up on the wall (framed of course).
so pretty...
