TiVo breaks even
This wasn't expected to happen until sometime next year, but TiVo achieved something of a milestone today: the
company reported that for the first time ever it managed to make more money than it lost, with revenues surging 46%
over the same quarter last year. We're not quite ready to call off the
Deathwatch just yet, though — TiVo only reported a meager
$240,000 in profit and they're anticipating a pretty serious loss of $20 to $25 million for the current quarter. Still,
it seems like things have been picking up for them lately — they
scored that major deal with Comcast back in March and
they're currently getting ready to rollout their new TiVo
Download service — so we're cautiously optimistic that this won't be the last time they report a profitable
quarter.

The download service might be pretty cool. That would probably be the only thing that would make me buy a TiVo box...unless you can download the service straight to your computer. If you can do that, I'll be perfectly happy with my ATI All-In-Wonder video card.

God bless you TiVo! I'm a crazy Canadian paying for service even though I have to hack my boxes and keep a lousy PC around to download the channel guide info.
Soon everyone will have had enough of their crashing Media Center PC's and randomly rebooting Scientific Atlanta boxes and see the light!

Why not just get a DVR for the Mac you better have?

i inherited the old family TiVo with a lifetime subscription since we bought a new one with HDTV and DVD-R support. i used to watch TV only in the big room and thought i couldnt live without TiVo, but now that i've been watching TV without it for a few months i barely care about the damn thing at all. maybe the download service will change that but i dont think so.

I've got two tivos and one of Comcast's godawful HD DVRs. I still use the TiVos for virtually all recording, except for HD content. Comcast's Tivo unit can't come fast enough; ye GODS is it badly designed.

Well of course they finally broke even. Lessee, they haven't released any new technology in thier boxes (series three anyone, please?), they have cut a bunch of staff, they haven't released any important upgrades and...
Bah, I am just jaded and angry because they refuse to spend any money on Macintosh development.
